Yeah...accept Rehny was past it and a risk. I know Kane had his injury trouble, but he is still in his prime. Our movement into the forward line hasn't been the same since. And don't go down that receiver path....he was a hard nut!

well I thought shaun was actually over his main injury problems, it was personality problems that were the catalyst. :( To me Kane was more an injury risk - he had and will always have dodgy hamstrings that need very careful management. I was a great admirer of his playing ability and his value to our team. But Shaun was well and truely the heart and soul of the club and to lose him was to me a greater loss

on kane I agree that he was tough but in reality he is a receiver and I said all good teams need one. The problem I had with him going to richmond was would they use him correctly - I don't think they did, they tried to turn him into an in and under midfielder and all the answers to their problems. It remains to be seen if wallets actually plays him in his correct position.

Good midfielders I think are much easier to find / get than a dominant ruckman - hence why we have drafted a large number of ruckman in the hope that one or two will develop properly. So that's what I base my reasoning on

If Rehnny had been a few years younger, Nikki, I would have agreed with you.

However IMO Rehnny was almost a spent force - be that mental or physical when he left the Crows. He only played the next 2 years with Hawthorn before giving the game away, and only had a very limited impact at that.

On the other hand Johnson left a hole in our mid-field that has never been replaced, and has played classy football in a bad team. Rehn at his peak was greater than Johnson at his peak, but when they left us Johnson was by far the most valuable - IMO. ;)

ok agree with what was said but what impact have both of them had after they left? (I'm a sentimental sap so I would have much preferred rhenny to finish out his career with us) Rhen had minimal impact at Hawthorn - yes, but was his heart in the game like it was with us? and I don't think Kane has been the world beater that many thought he may be. So I actually see both have had about the same impact for their 'new' sides and left two large holes to fill that haven't been :(

I agree with your comments on Shaun. He left for all teh wrong reasons, so as you say wouldn't have had his heart in it.

On the other hand, that''s a harsh call on Kane. I reckon he's played top footy with Richmond when very few else have.

Would love to have him back.

hmm I disagree - he was very important part of our midfield structure (every team needs a good receiver ;) ) But I would think the title of best player to leave may be one shaun rehn?
Rehn was just about finished when he got traded to Hawks, He had a couple of very injury riddled years with the Hawks.

I think Mods still had a lot to offer when he got traded. I think he kicked 68 goals for the dockers the next year. Our forward line has never been the same since Mods left.

While there is no doubt that Rahny was the heart and soul of the Crows, he was well past his best when he got traded.

Just out of interest was he ever given life membership to the AFC?????? Same with Mods?????

hmm if he stands out at richmond is he really that good ;) I was going on watching him in that first year at richmond, he was coming off a pretty good year with us and I know that it would take time to adjust to a different team and game plan but.... I expected more from him (he would be one of my fav crow players) - I will bow to your greater knowledge macca as I haven't seen him play for the last 2 years  I really miss my footy

but that will be over very soon

*happy dance time*

Nathan Brown was just saying on the Footy Show that the Richmond captain will be announced on Monday, and the favourite is Kane Johnson.

Just on the Footy Show, a very poor start to the year, with the same tired old tacky non-funny Sam Newman continuing on in poor taste.

Eddie got really sh*tty with him and shut him up when he was trying to make some poor taste joke about paedophiles, telling him that it wasn't a topic to joke about. Sam got a bit sulky about that for a while, because Eddie was serious.

Sam is looking a bigger jerk every year, and he's off to a flying start in that direction so far this year.

its not sam's fault, the show sets him up to be an idiot, so does eddie, while trying to be the ultimate professional himself. I'm sure hes told or given tips on what makes 'good' tv. For me its more annoying with someone like eddie, who tries to place the nice guy, while clearly having other motives

Kane Johnson, great player, works his arse off and doesn't make many errors. Uses the ball well, unlike some of our current players (cough Birdman cough).

Him leaving was the start of our decline in the midfield.

Can we pretty please have him back. I'll give you a choccy frog. :)

I don't mind not having Kane Johnson in our squad, he wanted to go home.

What I do mind is not having Daniel Wells (or even Steven Salopek or even Jarrad McVeigh) in it! Especially, now that Carey has retired.

yes, well thems the breaks, we did the trade because at the time all we seemed to be lacking was a focal point up forward. So if we had won a flag or at least made a GF you could have said that it was worth the trade. However as it has turned out that has not been the case and we missed out on pick 4 that got upgraded to pick 2 and was used to pick up Wells.

Question: Would you have traded Kane Johnson to get Wells??

Absolutely. And I doubt that there would be an AFL recruiter at any club who wouldn't. A 17 yo who finished runner up in the Sandover medal playing for a rabble who hardly won a game..........

You didn't have to be any great reader of young football talent to be able to work out that Wells was going to be a champ.

There is always a risk with drafting young players as some will never make the step up to AFL, but this guy was about as "risk free" as you can get for a 17yo. Wells didn't just play at WAFL level as a youngster, he was a standout performer. He has probably another 10-12 years of AFL footy in him and his potential is almost limitless (ie. AA, Brownlow).

I am a huge rap for Kane Johnson and I don't think it is maligning him at all when I say he will never, ever win a Brownlow.

thats right - at the time Carey trade for no 4 pick was worth the risk - it was just unfortunate that M Stevens & Welsh kept getting injured so that we couldnt have the forward line that we needed for a genuine premiership tilt

as for Wells - Richmond would not have traded the no 4 pick if they had known it would become the no 2 pick - the AFL dudded them and acted so unprofessionally in changing things after the trade period

This is my biggest gripe with the Blight-legacy, even moreso than him returning to football with the $aints 12 months after abandoning us.

In 1999 Modra - fully fit for the first time since 1994 - booted 71.43 (114 scoring shots) in a Fremantle side that could only manage 5 wins for the year.

Imagine what he could've done in our side with Ricciuto, McLeod, Goodwin and Johnson delivering him the ball on a plate?! Rehn or no Rehn we would've played finals with Mods on board.

But instead we got what, Daniel Schell?

I think that was Blighty's biggest mistake and probably one of the biggest by AFC. If you trade a superstar like Mods you better hope to get something bloody good in return. We got picks 29 and 35 and we picked up Stinger and Beinke with them.

Mods was a superstar FF. A bloke who can in any given year be a chance of kicking a century and we ********ed it all in the wind and traded him.

For all his good work, Blighty sure as hell made some ********ed up decisions.
