"There's guys who got rings that don't deserve them. There's guys you think deserve them and don't have them," Malone said, managing his first smile of the night. "I happen to be one of those."

Boo-****ing-hoo. Having a dig at the Pistons there, too. Class act.

He doesn't deserve squat. He had 2 chance with Utah, another in LA (where he sat in street clothes in one of the biggest games of his career, if you like). I swear he came out a few days earlier and said he'd play. Pussy.;)

The Lakers won with Samaki Walker at PF. Earn it, Karl.

You failed Karl. Go away. Mengke Bateer owns you.

Your a d***head Matty. Along with Baylor and Barkley there isn't a player more deserving of a Championship ring than Malone. So what if he had a little sook about it, he was only pointing out the obvious.

John Stockton?

If Karl won a ring without Stockton, it would be one of the greatest injustices in NBA history.

John Stockton is the only player more over-rated than Michael Jordan. A talent... no-doubt, a Hall-of-Famer... no doubt, but Stockton owes more to Malone, than Malone to Stockton. Malone was always going to be a superstar, Stockton just hung on for the ride.

The sceptic in me says Karl Malone who plays 19 seasons in Utah is less deserving of a ring than Karl Malone who plays 18 seasons in Utah and one in L.A.

Breaking news

LOS ANGELES--The Los Angeles Lakers have had plenty to deal with this preseason, but their troubles have just gotten even worse. Newly acquired Karl Malone, who was acquired this offseason to help the Lakers win another championship, has announced his retirement. The star forward held a press conference yesterday stating his intentions.

“I am holding this press conference to announce my retirement from the NBA,” said Malone. “It’s been a great ride, but I can hardly see the point in latching onto the Lakers for an entire year just to get a championship ring when there is a perfectly good one for sale on Ebay.”

The news of Malone’s retirement came as a shock to some, but others pointed out that there were indications he may be considering hanging it up. Sources close to the Lakers say that the turmoil stemming from the Kobe Bryant case has caused Malone to second guess his decision to join the team. With Bryant likely to miss time, his chances of acquiring the coveted ring would lessen considerably. But the real turning point came when Malone stumbled upon an official NBA championship ring for sale on Ebay.

“That pretty much sealed it right there,” says the source. “Once he realized he could get the ring on Ebay, the notion of playing out an entire grueling season stopped making sense. Especially since he wasn’t even guaranteed to win anything.”

Malone, who spent close to 20 years with the Utah Jazz without winning a championship, came to the Lakers for that very opportunity. The power forward had the misfortune of being in the league during the peak years of Michael Jordan’s dominance, so even the best Utah Jazz team could not compete with Jordan’s Chicago Bulls. Following a popular trend among today’s athlete’s, Malone took less money and went where he could win.

“The Lakers seemed like the perfect fit for me,” said Malone. “With Shaq and Kobe and Phil Jackson as coach, it was too good an opportunity to pass up. Then Kobe was arrested and things started to go down hill. I was still going to stick it out, though, until I saw that ring for sale.”

According to reports, the ring is from the 1976 NBA champion Milwaukee Bucks. It is not known which player originally owned the ring, but it just happens to be Malone’s size.

“Can you believe the luck?” asked Malone. “Just my size. I don’t know who it belonged to, but it’s about to be mine, as soon as I can figure out this Paypal thing. Poor guy must’ve gotten into some financial trouble and had to sell off his ring. That’s terrible. A ring is worth so much more than just money. It represents all your hard work and dedication. Or, in my case, it represents all of someone else’s hard work and dedication. But who’s keeping score?”

Malone’s friends and family applaud the move, saying it allows him to accomplish his goal of getting a championship ring while be able to spend more time with his family.

“I think it’s just wonderful,” said Jazz coach Jerry Sloan. “It’s what he always wanted. And you know what? I don’t see anything wrong with purchasing it on Ebay. It’s no more pathetic than whoring yourself to a dynasty for a year just to accomplish the same goal.”

Even Phil Jackson voiced his support for Malone’s move, though it will leave him shorthanded for the season.

“It’s a tough loss for us,” said Jackson in the parking lot after practice. “But loss is a part of life that we all experience from time to time. We just have to band together and rise above it. And it’s impossible for us to be angry with Karl for following his dream and purchasing a ring, even though Zen Masters teach us to free ourselves of desire and not covet material possessions...Hey, you almost scratched my Escalade, ****head. Watch it.”

Another future hall of famer without a championship ring is NBA analyst Charles Barkley. Barkley, who played for multiple teams in an attempt to win a ring, marveled at Malone’s luck.

“Goddamn. I didn’t know there was a ring for sale on the Internet. How much is it going for? Don’t you have to bid for those things? I’d give my left arm for one of those things, but not my right arm. After all, that's where I'd put the ring.”

Now that Malone is purchasing a championship ring, the city of Utah and the Utah Jazz organization is planning a tribute to honor the former all-star. There will be a huge parade followed by a ceremony at the Delta Center in which Malone will unveil his championship ring in front of thousands of fans.

“We’ve got a beautiful ceremony planned,” said Kevin O'Connor, Utah Jazz vice-president. “Karl Malone had a great career here in Utah and did a lot for this community. It will be our pleasure to honor him now that he has finally attained his elusive championship ring. I know he didn’t really earn it, but after spending 20 years in this backward, white bread freak town, he deserves it.”

Whilst I admit I am an avid hater of Karl Malone, I won't deny that he's been one of the best of the past 2 decades.

However, you don't get anywhere 'deserving' a ring. You have to earn one. Karl's had his chances and he blew 'em.

Arrogant bitter sulk, that Malone. :p

You idiot.

Yes, I can see how John Stockton, who must be accountable for about 80% of Karl Malone's 2nd all-time point scoring tally, is less deserving of a ring than Karl.

Let's put Tyronne Lue in that sitch and see how many points Karl puts up.

Bigest load of crap that I have ever read on Big Footy.

C'mon guys, when you're talking Stockton and Malone, one of them played for the all-mighty, all-conquering Lakers, one of them didn't. Of course one of them is better than the other, responsible for the other's success and more deserving of a championship ring.

Sure does.

John Stockton was arguably the 2nd best PG of all time. For someone to say he is overrated is the biggest load of **** to ever come out of their mouth. The bloke was an absolute champion and Malone wouldn't be as good a player as he was if it wasn't for Stockton feeding it down his throat.

Some people talk a lot of crap.

Yes. I'm bitter than my basketball idols, David Robinson, Sean Elliott and Avery Johnson have rings.

So very bitter.

The fact that you, a supporter of a team who got knocked out long ago, felt the need to gloat (amidst childish jibes and name calling) about a guy missing out on a ring, speaks volumes.

You could almost understand such a post if you were a Detroit fan, but when you support a team who was banished a while back, shows that the grapes are mightily sour.

And Karl is a model citizen, claiming that Detroit players don't deserve their rings, a day after sitting in a massive game.

No, I'm not bitter about Karl knocking D-Rob unconscious once...much. ;) :D

Read the first post of this thread. ;)

Correct me if I'm wrong here, cause I may be, but I'm sure I remember reading Karl say that he'd play in the elimination game because he had time to rest his body after basketball or something. Then he sat.

*shrugs*
