How long before he gets dumped?

I'm hesitant to criticise him, and recognise that switching sports was always gonna be difficult for him, but he is that useless right now that Gold Coast are effectively playing with 17 men. He will improve but how long can Gold Coast afford to wait?
There are marketing considerations, but how long can they afford to keep a bush-leaguer in their 22?
I suspect that the day he gets dropped will be the end of his football career.

I refuse to bad mouth him until he has a worst on ground performance, which I don't believe he has. Was actually very strong in contests in GC's final quarter against Port.

hes actually playing fairly well.

of corse, stats dont show it, but thats because hes a defender!

what do you expect? 40 touches and 3 goals?

The idea of a defender is to stop your direct opponent kicking goals, and apart from the dons game (but when the oposition kicks 20 goals in a quarter you can forgive him), he has!

Eh, I don't think he'll get droped unless its for fitness reasons, for the length of his current contract. Assuming that he signs another one next year, if he doesn't keep on improving then maybe he might find his position under siege by other players who are devloping faster than him.

They'll probably have to stick with him this week with Campbell Brown still out given that not many of the others in the backline have any sort of size amongst them (Bock returning helps a lot). After that, don't know, but perhaps Josh Fraser will get dumped before him at this rate.

Just a stopper at this point. Bock's return will help him.

If he was your average 24yo you'd be concerned, but I guess they're not paying him ~$1M a year to play in the QAFL.

I agree, he is playing a great pressure game at the moment while he is developing the needed skill. As you said its not all about possessions. Few days ago Dimma praised Jake Kings 2nd qtr against the Lions as being one of his best for the night, but he only got 2 possessions, it was his enormous pressure keeping the ball locked in the forward 50 that had the coach excited. I reckon Hunt will do all right in the coming years. Good on him.

Better than Pyke at the same stage. Pyke is now a genuine AFL standard ruckman, and is still improving. Hunt was more successful in his previous sport than Pyke.

So yeah, I wouldn't be too worried. I reckon he'll get there. Never be a champion, but he'll probably be a better-than-average player in about 3 years.

Your point is correct, however the paypacket for hunt doesn't back up his playing ability, hence why everyone jumps on his poor performances

That's true but how many people tuned in just to watch Pyke?
How many threads, newspaper articles, radio/tv shows discussed Pyke after every game?

He is earning his money and playing like a 5th gamer from another code. What more can you expect?

Yeah, but he's not being paid for his playing ability. I'm surprised people seem to be having so much trouble with this concept.

After his current contract ends, he'll be given a still pretty hefty, but more reasonable, contract. By this stage, his ability will have increased to match it closer. He'll still be paid more than he deserves based purely on performance, because he will still be an NRL convert, with the associated prestige that brings the AFL, but it will more closely reflect his ability.

1:08 in you can see why the recruited him, he is a well rounded athlete.

Josh Toy would get dropped before K

Karmichael doesnt really get beaten too often one on one, he just gets caught out game sense wise and loses his opponent.

Josh Toy consistently gets beaten one on one, ball watches and looses his opponent in the context of the game.. Plus he turns the ball over when ever he gets it. K might turn it over but he doesnt get the ball 15-20 times a game like Toy.

We understand the concept, but question the worth of the charisma or magic or whatever it is he brings with him. Surely after half a dozen nondescript performances, the curiosity factor has waned.

There are probably six or seven players you could drop from that list.

I don't think Hunt has been outstandingly bad. Having said that, the return of Bock and Brown won't help his cause.

To the OP - you clearly haven't been watching any games.
He's coming along nicely and is playing his role well when it comes to deefending, and has used the ball very well 80% of the times he's had it.

No way he's at risk of being omitted or not earning a place in their 22

So? The only reason he didn't receive all the money in one big lump sum was the salary cap and an incentive to keep him playing longer than one season. He's already earnt the money with the publicity he created (and don't for a second think it wasn't worth it; a few million bucks is nothing to the AFL for points scored against the NRL alone), he's just getting paid in a normal AFL contract structure.

The curiosity factor NOW is irrelevant. He's done his job, he's reaping the reward. Now he can focus all his efforts on getting as good as possible to make his next contract, which will far more closely reflect his actual playing ability, as big as possible (and contribute to the on-field success of the club, of course).

Glad that you could see how ordinary Toy was on Sunday - Not surprising for a four game player - Pity the commentators couldn't see what was obvious.

like many i dont think he has been that bad and he has been very steadily improving. also there probably isnt much point in dropping him. they are not going to win the flag this year, so he has to be in there to learn.

i for one think he will be a fairly solid player, given what ive seen so far.

Wake up people, he's been shocking. If his name wasn't Karmichael Hunt and earning a squillion dollars, he'd be playing in the QFL. He'll never make a top level AFL player and therefore not earning the money he's being paid.

As for not being beaten one-on-one, he's a defender, when does he ever play one-on-one? He gets one kick a game and everyone thinks he's doing well

For a guy who has played less then half a dozen games of afl in his life he is doing fine. He obviously has a lot to learn but his desire to learn and his naturalcompetitiveness are the biggest attributes he has at the moment.

People need to remember that on average it takes a player from a different code (gaelic football , basketball, union, etc) between 1-3 years to get a handle on playing afl and on that basis he is tracking very well and this time next year people will be amazed at just how far he has come.

EFA. Rugby is waiting for the prodigal son to return as we speak, it'll be a soft landing for him when and if it happens.
