Tenacious and often ungainly, Wessels is the type of batsman who seems to succeed despite his technique. He cuts well, pulls effectively, and has a beautiful but underutilized cover drive; but he has the left-hander's weakness outside off, and is generally incapable of doing anything with deliveries pitched up on leg.
During South Africa's isolation Wessels chose to move to Australia, where he enjoyed a moderately successful international
career. At the age of 30 he returned to South Africa and thereafter became the second postisolation South African captain.
