A flog or a funny man? starting to give me the sh-ts now

Flog.

He has it in him to be an insightful commentator when he puts away the pre-scripted jokes that he’s been sitting on for months and months, when he stops pretending that he’s been watching so-and-so from some far-flung corner of the universe incredibly closely since the age of 3 and he will go on to be the next Bradman when in reality he’s just read that a bloke made one century in a first class game and is averaging 24 overall for their career, and when he stops referring to people by either nicknames they don’t even know they have, or by their first initial followed by their surname.

But he reeks of someone who’s fallen in love with his own myth.

He had a stint in the 90s on Channel 9’s B Team doing the Mercantile Mutual Cup and while he just sounded strange because he wasn’t one of the regulars he was really good and there was none of the schtick he has now: that’s what makes me sort of think he went away and decided he had to come up with this exaggerated persona that we see getting bigger and bigger every year on TV

He's alright. He's not as hilarious as the co-commentators seem to think he is when they wet themselves after he makes a 6/10 joke at best, but he's harmless overall. Can provide some good insight at times but can be very eye-rolling at others. Basically what I think of all the Fox commentators tbch.

The "joke" just before was a perfect example of the eye rolling. Isha asked "How many notes would you have had" and Skull replies "I would've had a whole book" que Ish laughing for the next 10 seconds before saying "I thought you used all your material yesterday!"

What, was that supposed to be funny? Please tell me that wasn't a set up joke, I already feel embarrassed enough just hearing you both laugh uncontrollably, let alone knowing that it was planned..

He’s harmless, decent insight, good for a bit of a laugh from time to time. Not one of the great commentators but a long long way from the worst. Don’t mind him at all

He’s hilarious. If you can’t laugh at him and with him then look in the mirror and you’ll find a flog.

Commentators - good ones - don’t need to pre-script jokes to be remembered. If he actually came up with some more stuff like what he said today about Jamal having played a Sydney grade t20 final against Pat Cummins, which I thought was really interesting and showed great insight and research, that would show a commentator who’s really gone deep into what he is watching, but it doesn’t happen often enough from him and he plays the clown more than he does the special comments man.

Occasionally he actually does give an off the cuff joke and you can tell it’s not pre-planned and it actually IS funny

Love him. Jokes are lame but I get a kick out of him.

The guy genuinely loves cricket, knows his history and you can tell he actually follows the game.

Get the feeling some of the others watch the Aussies and nothing else. Their knowledge of touring players is limited to last time they played in Australia combined with running an eye over their career stats. Don’t get that feeling with Skull.

He's gone the way of Dennis Cometti who was a great commentator that made the odd funny off hand quip.

He started to get more attention for his funny quips so then he started to shoehorn more of them into his commentary like Kerry is doing.

Their main role should be a commentator and not trying to be a comedian, if I wanted comedians commentating sport I'd listen to Roy & HG.

I've chatted to him at a few functions and he is a genuinely thoughtful and insightful guy who loves the fame and researches and watches a lot ....
But, he has got to a stage where he is playing a role - like Denis Cometti as a previous person posted which cheapens his genuineness

yikes people are harsh, mark waugh would be lucky to name a player in the tour squad each summer kerry knows his stuff like on abrar ahmed knew alot where as so many wouldn't. hayden, flemo.

He definitely knows more than those guys - they’d be lucky to run their eye over a squad list before a game let alone know anything about the people in it.
There’s times he also gives the impression he just listens to what a team’s home commentators say about someone though and recycles it a bit.
I question what sort of balance he has between actually watching and following other cricket and just checking the occasional score or report

One thing I will say is he’s f**king passionate about grade cricket

I was more talking about him thinking he is funny, yes he has a good joke now and then, but way over the top at times.
