Another year...same problem. 3 of Geelongs first 4 goals coudl be put down to our inability to get the ball in play after a point and clear our defensive 50 at least. Most other sides seem to be able to use this a set play and rebound often to a shot on goal...why not us? I am at a loss as to an answer but also cant tell squat from the TV

:)EQUALLY concerning for me is the new rule that prevents teams from rushing behinds. The rule clearly favours the better skilled teams - and better teams overall - who have the ability to clear the ball from defence with greater ease. On more than a few occasions on Saturday, Geelong was able to clear the ball from the last line of defence with ease, all because they hit targets. Our guys struggle, but are now forced to keep the ball in play as opposed to conceding a point and starting from scratch!!!

Genuine question, excuse my ignorance but who is our defensive coach?

Agreed.

Newman was just bombing it and there apppeared to be no urgency to get it in quickly either.

It was real 1980's stuff and no commentators said a word.

Yeah but if Newy has nobody to kick it to then what else can he do...

I think the stat of 16 goals 6 behinds scored to Carlton from Richmond turnovers, most being in the defensive 50 is even scarier.. this is a big problem at the moment for the boys.

call me a radical but we have several players capable of kicking 50+ meters how about kicking the ball strait up the guts as far as possable to a marking contest or god forbid a leading target i know it makes sense and would most likley work but tw isnt that bright thoughts ?

Wouldn't work, cos' we don't have any marking options outside of Richo, and our small players aren't the best "crumbers" in the league...

They are professional footballers for gods sake, not asking much but to hit a target, preferrably ours...

You play the way you train, that's where I'd start pointing the stick.

yeh and doesnt help when youve got king, symmonds and mcguane floating around the backline who cant hit targets,i dont know the answer, maybe get richo to hurry up and have kids

We did exactly that perhaps a dozen times on the weekend and have been since last year. We get a ruckman and a handful of our best contested ball winners, Newman kicks 55m to the left hand edge of the centre square (his left) aiming to put it on the ruckman's head and get it brought to ground, and we use dummy leads right of centre and up the middle.

It's a set play and has been for quite some time.

The slight variation of it is the same thing with a 60-65m torp.
