Kick Ins

Our set ups for kick ins isn't working. We huddle at CHB and then break to the flanks, although hardly any of the players actually push out on a proper lead. Slattery was our option about 4 times! Why aren't Hille, Laycock, Rider presenting as long targets? Are they being lazy?

Also, i don't think Nash is our best kicker option.

I know this has been mentioned in another thread, but i have noticed it happening for a couple of weeks. Any ideas?

Fletcher not being there as an option killed us.

Never to be played forward again in my opinion.

Nash has taken most of them this year, with NLM, Rama, Reimers and Fletch taking the odd ones.

I'd like Rama personally, although it has to be a player who is in the back line.

surely blokes over 190cm (ie fletcher, ryder) shouldn't be kicking in when we are lacking tall targets?

andrew lovett could be an option - he's useless in a contested situation and his skills are reasonable so perhaps he could be worth a try. in this aspect we don't lose a player as a target and when the ball turns over he doesn't apply much pressure either. once he's done the kick in he could sprint up the flank and try to get on the end of something. he also has the option of playing on from the kick-in given his pace and bombing it well outside 50m. happy to cop criticism for this but just throwing it out there.

Our players just wouldn't give the player kicking out any chances at all of picking out a target. All you can call it is just Laziness.

From the 2nd quarter onwards it was plain Laziness.

We can't take such an eternity to bring it in.

Quick movement is our biggest asset, yet we waste away any opportunity we have to do so.

Much needs to be done to get this working, mainly because it could make us lethal on the rebound.

At the moment, we're looking more likely to turn it over than get any value out of it.

It's funny because weren't we one of the better teams at kick-ins last season?

We need to get the ball asap and just kick it. Like every other team. This midfield clump doesn't work.

It's gotten to the point where the opposition getting a point is better for them as we turn it over 90% of the time from kick-ins.

Obviously Fletch is far and away the best option at present, given he's beeen doing it for 15 years. But ideally we would be developing someone now to take over in 2-3 yrs when Dustin's gone. Qualifications seem to be a, doesn't panic, b reliable kick with the ability to get depth, c worth his place in the 22, d will be around for a while. Doesn't leave a big field does it ? Perhaps Nash fits the bill but don't know he commands aplace at present. Otherwise we just stick with Fletch this year and look again next year.

It's not the person taking the kickins that matters most. It's the ____ing team strategy. It doesn't work, hasn't worked all year and the coaching staff need to change it up.

I CANNOT BELIEVE THEY HAVE PERSISTED WITH THE HUDDLE. I have absolutely no problem with it in theory and it has worked for some.... BUT, when the players all just stand there not presenting any form of option, IT WILL NEVER WORK. Jesus, it looks like they're glued to the ground. The kicker has been forced to kick wide, where we're usually out-numbered or play on and cough it up.

I was watching from behind the goals and most of the time no one moves with any purpose.

One thing that's pissed me off about our team the last few seasons is the lack of purposeful movement to present an option (moreso around the ground than at kick-ins). So many guys jog. That's the worst option of all. At least if you stand still you don't clog up the space for someone actually willing to sprint. We self-flood. It must be hilarious for opposition supporters watching it. Like ant555 said in another thread, we play dumb football too often.

The Crows did tests over a series of time and found Johncock was the most accurate and best distant kicker for them so he does the most unless there is a quick break .
The Bombers should do the same .
Johncock today when he couldnt go sideways or short in the back and didnt take risks he went long , its not rocket science just common sense and the Crows dont panick in the backline like the Bombers.
One of his kick ins travelled 65 mt straight to his teammate in the centre of the ground.

I agree, the system is rubbish it gives me the screaming shits watching the opposition waltz the ball out of our defence and then no one is working hard when we are kicking out.

I'll agree with that except I believe the theory of the huddle is fundamentally flawed.

In the end, unless the break's successful you're not going anywhere. You may be able to find a short target, but in breaking, you break with the opposition and practically build their wall across half back for them.

As was the case on Friday, we ended up kicking to a contest unless we perfectly executed the break.

Executing the break is no easy task either.

In this day and age, you've just got to get it in quickly to a man on the move. I'd like to see them work on a strategy of getting a guy back to the goal mouth whenever the opposition have a shot without sacrificing accountability and moving a guy out to a flank.

The tactics and our midfield are the key. They need to give options and work hard up and down the ground. Not doing either. Our midfield is poor at this stage.

We have to be one of the laziest teams going around I reckon. So many players simply run on the spot, for crying out loud use your pace and run into space. As much as I think players like Houli are great, he just does not run hard enough, or run into space. It's as if some of our players don't even want the ball they just run around hoping it comes to them on a platter. This is effectively showing in the kick-ins where we struggle because players aren't willing to put in the hard yards and run into space.

Should be fletcher who can get it out of the danger area with one kick.

How many times do the players kicking in, kick short to a 1 on 1 contest. If they don't have an option to kick to then kick the ball long! The further the kick goes the further the ball is from our defensive 50.
