Guessing you've never used it?
Have actually, my dad owns one which is the sort of market its aimed at, people who are no good with controllers. Hes hopeless at shooters because of the 2nd analogue stick :D

Played a bit of kinect adventures and flailing my arms around is no different to doing the same thing with the eyetoy. Noticable lag on the ball brick breaking game, didnt have high expectations when i saw it and it was justified in the horrible experience i had with it. Wiimote and Move are at least practical for real games, kinect is more of a gimmick IMO.

Kinect absolutely dominates the Move when it comes to sales figures

I would take a rough guess and say that i sell at least 8 Kinects for every 1 Move bundle

Even pre order numbers had the Kinect so far in front it wasn't funny

Also, anyone claiming that Kinect is "Eyetoy 2.0" is a fool, who has never used the tech. Its quite impressive

Sales shows casuals will buy anything heavily advertised. Too bad we cant play sales or it'd be a decent device :p MS cashing in on the Wii crowd and the whole you are the controller marketing worked well for them.

Read my above post, have played it. the tech could be impressive but until theres actually a real game you can play and not a bunch of shovel-ware that involves flailing your arms and legs around, then its nothing but another eyetoy. If they can release a fps, platformer, rpg, fighter or 3rd person game that actually works as good if not better than the controller then ill eat my words....it will never happen.

Like i said before even Nintendo passed on the technology and those guys are the innovators of the business so they must of known it wouldn't work with real games.

I was impressed by this video though

Just like the powerglove, virtual boy, that stupid giant robot thing and that's just off the top of my head.

Joyride is a poor game that has received poor scores from reviewers.

It's like showing a clip of a turkey like Turning Point: Fall of Liberty and saying it's indicative of the PS3/360's capabilities

nah, too expensive

Nintendo could have outfitted a gyroscope from the beginning to improve accuracy but decided not to due to costs

the Kinect is the natural evolution of Nintendo's philosophy with regards to user interface.

its clear that Sony screwed up though going with the Move..... you're not going to beat Nintendo by copying them.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-01-06-kinect-success-a-surprise-to-us-all

Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter told Eurogamer, "The Kinect shipment number suggests seven million sold to consumers. I initially expected three million, and was surprised when they forecast five million. So I am very surprised by this figure; it is truly impressive."

EEDAR research and communications VP Jesse Divnich echoed the sentiment. "The success of the Kinect was a surprise to us all, and to Microsoft as well," he said.

"Among all the analysts, I was the most bullish, forecasting five to six million in sell through by the end of the year. While Microsoft announced eight million in 'ship-in', it would imply at least 6.5 million units, surpassing even the most bullish of estimates.

Any idea what sort of margin MS are making on the kinects Midori?

Are they priced at a loss to get units off the shelves similar to the console strategy, or are they actually making some good scratch off them?

Cost about $50 USD to make according to google

well there have been varying reports

the most optimistic I can remember is a bill of material estimate detailing a 56 dollar US cost

http://www.eetimes.com/electronics-news/4210649/Kinect-s-BOM-roughly--56--teardown-finds-

SAN FRANCISCO—Microsoft Corp.'s Kinect motion-gaming add on for its Xbox 360 gaming platform carries a bill-of-materials (BOM) of roughly $56 and features chips made by PrimeSense Ltd., Marvell Technology Group Ltd., Texas Instruments Inc. and STMicroelectronics NV, according to a teardown analysis performed by UBM TechInsights.

that doesn't take into account the half a billion marketing costs Microsoft is reported to have sunk into the project though...

in the end.... I don't think they care too much as long as its a success..... its all about the future.

It still begs the question of what will a racing game be like, also why did Joy Ride need THAT much help? I get the market, but really 3rd without moving a muscle?

Can't wait to see how Forza 4 reacts with Kinect. I can't see it working out as a finesse system that has been shown in trailers (as in Kinect being able to detect your foot slightly lifting off the floor to decelerate or whatever). Will they go the arcade route with a Kinect mode (similar to what the Harry Potter game did) or will they attempt the full on simulation with Kinect in the campaign and online?

Honestly though, what have they screwed up? The reason MS is doing so well with Kinect is because of the half a billion dollars put to marketing the system, not because of a 'copy' issue.

Sony tried this no controller scheme years ago with the launch of the EyeToy, there were plenty of titles with the same techniques and even through to the PS Eye now there have been controller-less titles (even the most recently "Kung Fu Live", which has been given 'mixed' results, now has a demo, so I'll give it a go whenever I get Move with the Eye).

It's a marketing issue more than anything, MS has the money to spend, Sony obviously don't (they also rather spend it on the games...).

What Sony have done with move seems reasonable enough, they know the exact market they've gone for and have capitilised to a fair extent, they certainly haven't or won't lose money on it.

missing the big picture

The Kinect is essentally a new console launch to challenge not just Nintendo but Apple/Google Tv etc.....

the marketing budget is a moot point, Microsoft has bigger fish to fry than just selling videogames. They want to control the ecosystem of the living room

Sony has similar aspirations but their strategy with the Move was a defensive one to mitigate the product differentiation of their competitors.

They're counting on crusing for a few years selling their games and expanding their online strategy to their existing target market.

basically continuing what they've been doing for the last 5 years....only bigger

The problem is the monumental security hole that now exists in the console

this may be awesome for gamers... yay mkv player, region free bluray/dvd linux woohoo

but terrible terrible news for Sony....

when piracy is as easy as plugging in a usb stick and your target market are technologically confident to take the plunge.... you're %$#@ed

you may counter that with arguments like " bluray is huge" and they'll ban them from PSN

but download limits are huge too and usb hard drives have never been cheaper...

furthermore because of the security breach, hackers if they're dedicated enough could create a whole new environment to bypass PSN altogether....

the PS3 has essentially become a really cheap PC.... which is Sony's worst nightmare

Microsoft on the other hand has never been in a better position

The Kinect will allow them to challenge anything that Nintendo serves up leaving them free to consolidate....

or release a new hardcore console and kill Sony's games division once and for all.

an al cheapo system on a chip Xbox with Kinect could probably form the basis for a next generation set top box that will serve as a conduit for future applications in the living room.

which only exacebates the failure

History is littered with innovators who failed to consolidate

Friendster, Yahoo, Sega etc

its not a sprint but a marathon.... being first doesn't guarantee success

I have got a few Kinect games and think that this is going to be a huge success.

Kinect sports, Dance Central, Kinect Adventures are good games but not great. Cannot wait for a really great game on Kinect. Hopefully this year it really shows it potential. But from my opinion it's a good device that is a lot better then Wii and PlayStation move.

amen to that.

Supporting NTFS file systems on external storage would also be nice

wowowowowowowow

that is ****ing crazy and demonstrated on a truly awesome game.

if shit like that gets inplemented into everything then it is no longer just a gimmick. it truly would be a game changer.

his setup is a little awkward but if he had it all connected with a smg type gun like is being released for KZ3 then it would be far easier. (pretty certain i will buy it just for the sake of it)

how funny would it be seeing them demonstrating this stuff on halo with a PS move controller and navigator inside a kz3 smg

Kinect hardware outsells Move 5:1; Software 13:1

The first round between these two motion rivals is over and it's a knock-out in favor of Microsoft's Kinect. Industry Analyst Pachter had this to say:

"About one fifth of PS3 sales included bundles with Sony’s Move controller, suggesting a modest third month (we have chosen not to subscribe to peripheral data). About half of Xbox 360 sales included bundles with Microsoft’s Kinect peripheral, as Xbox 360 Kinect console bundles outsold PS3 Move console bundles by 5:1," Pachter said.
"Microsoft announced that it has shipped 8 million Kinect units since launch (in November), which was raised from its earlier goal of 5 million. More significantly, in our view, the top two selling Kinect software titles outsold the top two Move titles by over 13:1."

It'd be good to get some actual true gameplay for once with a Kinect announcement...

What type of game is it?
It's a cross between a platformer and a shooter starring a skeleton cowboy that you puppeteer with your hands. There appears to be a lot of on-rails shooting sequences. Expect some similarities to Rez. The action on screen is supposed to be a puppet show, complete with an audience cheering you on. Twisted Pixel says there are no mini-games or "forced gestures."
