ive been wanting to bring this topic up for ages.

The media praise that has been heaped upon him,the tv appearences, the ads,he is the Beckham of footy in terms of popularity.

Its a bit like how they carried on about Richo for the first 4-5 years of his career. I used to think, yer he's good.but not that f---ing good.
Correct, they gloss over his mistakes as well, as they do with Buckley, it`s as if they never happened.

My memories of Hird are greater than Watson.
I rate Timmy as the second best Bomber I've seen, but I probably don't have as greater memory of him at his best as I do of Hird, I was a bit young.

I'll use the word again, Hird amazes me. He really does, I can't put it any more simple than that.

Mmmmmm....what about putting it another way.

i rate the super stars of essendon like this. The crowd lifter.

The type of player who, when he gets the ball, the crowd goes nuts.
You just know sumthing special is guuna happen.

I see it as Hird,Watson,Mercuri and Leon Baker as these type of SStars.

Then u have the SS workhorses, Madden,TD,Wellman,Fletcher, blokes who just do the job every week ,playing very good footy thru out their entire career.

But Hird is the ultimate utility player.can play every where.any position. maybe that makes him stand out from the other crowd lifters?

Hird like Watson are both crowd lifters and workhorses.
They both had freak ability in skill terms, but they are both incredibly hard working and consistent footballers.

That's what sets Hird apart from blokes like Mercuri, Baker, Rioli etc. He lifts the crowd and his side more often than not.

yes thats another point.Clangers.Hird doesn't make many of them, Every ball is used with thought, purpose. Same as Watson and Baker.

i sort of put Lloydy in a different catagory. The FF catagory.

I cant seem to compare any great FF with the greats of other positions.

its like they are in a different group. If u had a tape of Lloyds top 200 marks, what a show that would be.He's true champion.

Hird could play Lloyd's position (and has) and do it effectively (and has). Obviously, he would never have kicked 100 in a season, but he would still make a very handy FF.

I agree. But is Hird going to be remembered, 10 years from now,as the greatest bomber ever, with RS Reynolds right behind him.

Or will it stay the way it is? D---k is still King Richard and Hirdys the second best player?

I don't think so.

Hird's our greatest of the professional era, but Hird at his peak was rated behind Reynolds and Coleman. I think it may well stay that way.

Lloyd`s carried us over the line as much as, or as more than Hird.

a bit young? I got the impression u were over 35 Longy.

I can remember so many Watson moments wen i was a kid.

Like Hird, all the fans used to just wanted Watson to get the ball. Give it to him around 45mts from goal and we just expected a goal, a lightning pass, slick handball. 83'84'85' he was so good. Hird has been playing at that level every season he played.

You know I rate Harvs highly also...he just seemed to play above his weight and hold his own more often than not. Getting crunched by gorillas, yet still being able to spear passes out of defence or into our forward line with precision also....

Lloyd and Hird

Isn't next season going to interesting between these two?

will lloydy just slide straight back into champion mode and kick 4-5 every week and just carry on from where he left off. And will Hird get thru game after game without getting leg injuries?

Lloydy could end up being bigger than all of them.he could play for another 4-5 years.

I got the feeling windy you think the same as me about Lloyd.

like your thread the other day.he is our best recruit for 2007 and nobodies talking about it cause their afraid he isn't gunna perform as before.

But I rekon its a blessing in disguise.I think he is gunna come back next year and dominate. Unstopable. he will be that pumped up he will be hard to stop. And if they can get Watson and his young mates to drill it to him properly....we are going to have a good year.

Haha. My family subscribe to the "you follow Essendon or you fend for yourself" theory. Every chance I would have ended up in the Maribyrnong had I chosen another side. It's all a bit tragic really, but I started going young, before I really remember. I made a post last year some time about my time as an Essendon supporter, so perhaps the mystery isn't as great as you might think. I'll see if I can dig it up.

I just love talking about Essendon.

Oh, and Hird amazes me.

Can't imagine wat i'd be like after 11,000 posts but.

One would have heard every possible theory and opinion on efc there is known to man kind.

It would be hard to get excited about any posts after so long.

Ive been living out of melboune for 13 years. So u can imagine my joy wen i got put onto BF and was able to get 13 years of Essendon talk off my chest. My wife is happy i don't try to start up footy conversations with her as much this year.

I am proud of the fact that i brought her over from the dark side and convinced her to go from Collingwood to Bomberland. It was no easy job.1993 season helped a lot:thumbsu:
