Just been reported by Sam McClure that Koby Stevens is meeting with saints players to announce his retirement effective immediately

If true, sad news but looking after his long term health is far more inportant.

He could have been a fantastic aquisition for the saints but sadly never had the chance.

Good luck and thanks Koby

Farewell game in Round 20 vs the Doggies would be nice - our home game and against his old club.

Such sad news. Obviously he has been struggling with his mental state all year. And his interview on Fox Footy last month really summed it up.

One for the road;

Well done Koby.

Sad that his career has been cut short but his health must come first, good on sam McClure for tweeting it before he told his teammates to the parasite ranga germ

I thought exactly the same thing when i heard it. Could've held off for 30 minutes but wanted to make it about himself

I actually know a guy who got hit by a truck door when someone was delivering to his work. It sounds similar to what he got withe the concussion. It's ****ed because you look fine outside but the guy is really struggling with everything from emotional regulation to vertigo like symptoms and even agoraphobia. It's completely messed his life up.

I rate Koby as a footballer too, it's a big loss, his best footy was elite while his body never let him et a great run at it he could put in some very special games. Hope he gets his head right soon and he finishes his course and got on to bigger things.

This is the article from his interview he had. Horrible stuff.

ST KILDA’S Koby Stevens has opened up for the first time on the scary concussion symptoms he’s faced in recent years, revealing his worst head clash “felt like a bomb had gone off”.

Stevens, also a former Bulldog, was ruled out for the remainder of the 2018 season after clashing heads with Brisbane Lions midfielder Mitch Robinson in Round 1.

In an exclusive interview with Fox Footy’s On The Mark, an emotional Stevens said he played out the Saints’ Round 2 game against North Melbourne, before making the decision to speak with the St Kilda medical staff after feeling “really ill”.

“I’d just come back into the side, so I obviously didn’t want to speak up and we had a pretty big game that Friday against North Melbourne and I just went out and played,” Stevens told Fox Footy’s On The Mark.

“It wasn’t until that next week when I was really bad, I felt really ill. It wasn’t great, I went into the doctors and seeked some more advice after that.”

Stevens said he had encountered several symptoms since the Round 1 incident, adding that concentrating for more than 10 to 15 minutes was difficult.

“It’s a day-to-day thing. Some days I wake up and I’m pretty clear and then I try do a little bit of exercise and as soon as my heartrate gets up, I just get real chronic headache and pretty dizzy,” Stevens said.

“I haven’t run or touched a footy in eight weeks, so it’s been pretty difficult and frustrating.”

The incident has also affected the 26-year-old’s studies, deferring his university degree after “getting really dizzy and really bad headaches that were non-stop for eight weeks”.

Stevens has suffered multiple concussions during his footy career, but he said none were more confronting than the one he experienced after clashing with Melbourne’s Angus Brayshaw in Round 21 last year.

“I reckon that one was the worst one I’ve ever had,” Stevens said.

“I wasn’t knocked out, but it felt like a bomb had gone off. I couldn’t hear anything and it hit me right in the ear drum, so for about 10 to 15 minutes I had ringing in my ears.

“I quickly ran off after that but then something happened on the field. There was a quick sub that had to be made, so I just ran back out but I had no balance. I was leaning to one side where I’d been hit and was about to fall over, so I knew something was pretty bad then.

“I obviously went back off then and did all the concussion tests and didn’t play the rest of the game.”

The reality of his situation began to take its toll on Stevens after recently getting back scans on his brain.

“I’ve was pretty good in the early days, but we had a scan result come back that suggested that I did have changes to my brain,” Stevens said.

“I was pretty hurt as it was pretty tough to take … I’ve taken hits, come back from them strong but to have someone say there’s been changes to my brain and they can’t really tell you what they are, they’re just there, it’s tough.”

Thank you for your short time at our club Koby. Your bravery and drive are what brought you to us, and we miss them today. I'm sure most Saints fans like me wish you many more enjoyable years of retirement and hope that you'll never feel alone. You have 3 footy families now, so I doubt you will!

Good luck in realising your life ambitions off the field.

Terrible news for Koby and Saints fans . I only hope his health improves and he gets back to normal some time soon. He is one of those players who always gives his all . I hope he enjoyed his short time at St Kilda .

I do worry that we might end up going through this scenario with Paddy and Robbo too.

Go Saints

gutted for the bloke ... he left the WCE for better opportunities and landed at the dogs only to find injurys and ultimatly missed on the dogs flag, he then left the dogs for more opportunity and came to us only to get food poisoning .. once he got going he showed a lot of value and seemed to be well liked by the boys down at the club ... really terrible way for it to end but by the sounds of things he has still got a long way to go to getting better so hopefully for his sake it all settles and he can regain a quality of life post footy ....

Tough, determined, competitive, fearless - which was probably his undoing - and the hardest of hard workers; a lot of ours could learn from him.

I was a huge fan, even before he became a Saint.

A big shame, but family and health come first.

Go well Koby.

Feel free to wind up on that ****ing twatwaffle on Twitter.

Plenty are.

Liked Koby as a Dog and was very pleased when he came to play for us. We only glimpsed his best due to injury and illness and we've really missed his toughness this year. Wish him all the best for his life after football.

A lap of honour before the start of the Bulldogs game would allow both sets of supporters to give him a proper send off!
