Kouta, could play key position or midfield, was just as quick, far better mark and kicked more goals. The only reason Kouta is not one of the best of all time was injury and consistency. At their best though ..... whoa.

There was that game against West Coast at Princess Park in I think 1997. The whole team put in a shocker, and Kouta won it by himself. Then there was the 99 Preliminary Final. If he didn't get injured in 2000, we would already have no. 17.

Kouta... the ultimate footballer.

Send him out with the instructions to play the loose man all over the field and on his day, would single handedly rip teams apart.

Oppositions couldnt tag him out of the game and had the strength and power to deal with the tactics that teams are using on Judd these days.

That's it in a nutshell. Too quick for the talls and too tall for the quicks.

Was it Leigh Matthews that said he would like a team of 22 Kouta's?

In one other clip, Bruce McAvaney talks about Kouta in the same breath as Michael Jordan. 'He's a superstar in his own right, certainly in our game.'

The superlatives for Kouta late 90s, early 00s were coming thick and fast.

Think about his 5 year contract that crippled us when he was injured. He was the highest paid player in the game at the time.

Kouta for me and he was unstoppable by anyone when on fire. Just ask Essendon supporters from the 99 Prelimanry final!! Amazing player that could do just about anything on the footy field. Kouta had that special talent and X factor that i dont think we will ever see or equaled again.

Thankyou
Kouta peak 99 - 01, injured 02, 03 onwards didnt recapture greatness. Correct?

I think that it was Lethal who said it...

He showed glimpses after his first knee injury but was rushed back in and did his knee again and that was it for him. He lost his explosive pace and acceleration.

Koutaman!!! In 2000 he was the best footballer playing the game by far. Averaged 30 touches in 8-10 games. Destroyed Carey in a one on one battle including kicking 5 goals. David Parkin said he was the best clearance player he had seen play the game. No one could stop him. Judd awesome player but until he stands on the dais holding the cup aloft with the Norm Smith around his neck Kouta for mine.

I have to say Kouta when he was 100% fit but with the injury we never got too see the best.We did see what he was about to do until his knees got wrecked like a 50 year old laying carpet.Judd is the better player.

Kouta >>>>>>>>daylight.

Kouta single handedly changed the way game was played by being the first true athlete to play the game. He is still talked about when people refer to utilities, as he was, and in my opinion, still is the best utility player to have played.

The way modern day football is played and the way players prepare themselve's to become AFL footballers is all due to Kouta and the way he changed the game.

He didn't recapture the greatness that had him head and shoulders above everyone else for a brief time .... no. He did reinvent himself for a couple of years into a pure clearance player/contested ball winner and won a B&F in that role.

Should have won the Brownlow and the 95 Norm Smith medal, was surprised that Diesel won it, although Williams had a great GF, Kouta was the one who did it all when the game was there to be won. There will never be a AFL player like Kouta, everytime the ball was in the air and he was around you could guarantee he would mark it or somehow get the ball and do something amazing with it.

Carlton have a lot of legends but if Kouta had stayed fit he would have been a dual Brownlow medalist, no team could stop him and no player could go one on on with him, just a all out gun.

Kouta was brilliant in season 1995 and again 2000
Ess fans may say that they were always going to win the 2000 flag, but facts are he would have lifted us to the premiership if he never got injured.
The way he played in the game against west coast out at princess park in 1996, or the prelim final, or even the 95 finals series.
35 poss against north.
33 against the cats
and when the lions threatened to claw back into it in the final term, kouta went forward and got 3 goals in 5 mins to put the result beyond doubt.
With sos he was the best finals player that year.
And lethal leigh either said he would love 4 koutas for the main positions on field or 22 to cover the whole field.
He was the prototype footy player, without injury he would have been as good as carey.

without injury, Carey would have been left sweeping up the mess made by Kouta leaving him in his dust.

Plenty of love for Judd - but sometimes we see things with rose coloured glasses.

For us oldies who remember Jesaulenko and Crosswell doing similar things for Carlton back in the 60s and 70s I could say where is the love for these 2 players.

I am happy we have had both of them wearing Navy Blue.
