Despite suffering an injury during pre-season will still add alot to the AFC outfit once he returns, had his best ever season in 2006 and will only improve his game, I hope he recovers well from his injury and shows all the AFC supporters why he is a fantastic player and a team man, and a great inspiriation for the younger players coming through the ranks.

Was fit for the prelim and not selected over Porplyzia and VB. One would expect that he's going to get less and less game time this year with Knights and possibly Douglas overtaking him too.
I'd expect him to play about 5-10 games but won't be an important part of the Crows this year.

Kris averaged 15.7 possesions a game in 2006, very good stats and will be back in the defence in 2007 to make an impact.

Maybe, but only if a LOT of players get injured ahead of him.

Massie does have a role in 2007. He is a "depth" player, who we can rely upon to perform consistently if/when called upon.

However, he has been overtaken on the pecking list by several of the "crushers" and I would expect to see him lining up for Norwood more often than Adelaide.

I like Massie but he has been overtaken by the younger players.

The injury hasn't helped either.

I like Massie as well.

I wouldnt say he has been overtaken by the younger players, but his spot will be the one under the hammer if NC decides a young player needs a block of games

Well I would be disapointed if that was the case, I think he a far more important and better player than the like of Perrie, Welsh and McGregor.

Better could be debated (and I'd rate him below all 3 on that) but those three are our tall forwards, somewhat more critical to a side than a mid with average skills.

You'll get no argument from me on that.

The difference is that Massie is a vanilla midfielder/flanker type. We have an abundance of those, particularly more highly talented younger ones who need gametime in order to gain experience.

Perrie, Welsh & Mcgregor on the other hand are tall forwards. Aside from Bock, the only alternatives to them are Sellar, Gill & Tippett - all of whom were only drafted 2-3 months ago. I have no great love for playing so many "3rd tall forward" types in one lineup, but until Sellar & Tippett are ready to hold down the key positions we don't have a lot of choice in the matter.

Well said.

Macca I am suprised you would devote so much energy to a player who is only a mid sized player, the club didnt rate him high enough to play finals and we have plenty of juniors we need to give game time to develop our list.

This is nothing personal against Massie, but realistically he should be in our squad for depth and thats it.

None of the young players with the exception of Hinge are that mid range height that Massie is. With Benny gone, a 188cm experienced player may well be needed in defence. Especially considering JT is the other guy who Massie is probably competing with for a spot, and he's not exactly known for his durability.

I am so sick of hearing this statement. Juniors will get game time when they earn a spot, not a moment before. We'd all love to see Douglas, Knights, Vince etc play every game, but it just isn't going to happen when our best 22 are fit.

So you dont believe in developing your list?

Should we get into the same position as Port are that we fall to 12th because we didnt give any juniors a go and when our aged players left we had no young kids with experience?

Perhaps we should also stop recruiting interstaters then. If we dont show confidence in them and give them game time then they will head home and we are back to square one.

Have you watched our past two seasons? we have gradually added some of our younger players into our side but when they have earnt the right to play AFL by measures that the club has set for them. we don't know what those expectations are as they are internal measures. I remember reading an article with Reilly and he expressed that he expected to get an AFL game soon after getting drafted as all his friends in victorian teams were also getting games, but when he finally did get a game he realised that he was not ready for it and in fact it probably set back his development quite a bit. Where have those Victorian teams finished on the ladder recently? It is a very fine balancing act of developing your team and developing the individual.

Our club looks at recruiting intelligent footballers now (not 'good blokes' as another club refers to their new draftees) - ones that understand that they need to prove themselves before they are handed an AFL career - it is to be earnt not handed on a plate. Look at Carlton - all that young talent that is being taught how to lose games, not how to be a part of a successful team.

I am sorry but this thread is starting to sound like a bad case of Deja View and the ‘Biglands’ threat.

Mate this isn't about what I believe. The club's position is to not just hand out games until they are earned. Otherwise they would have played John Meesen last year when he was hesitating to sign a new contract, or Fergus the year before.

The crushers will get a game when their form is consistently better than an incumbent in the team, or we have injuries.

Very succint post NN! :)

so you give a guy a game cause he isn't 21+ ??? strange logic and a good way to devalue a position and lower the bar for many players.

Personally I am happy blokes like Smith and Co never played from Adelaide simply because they were young.

for what it is worth this debate has been going on for years - my opinion changes every year as well :D . I agree that a player needs to earn their spot regardless of age, what the point of giving someone experience if they won't be around long enough to take advantage of it..

I don't think juniors should be given a game but when it's a line call I'd give the game to the player with more future upside who will benefit greatly from the experience. I think Douglas, Knights, Porplyzia and VB are all ahead of Massie for a role in the middle. You have to be careful that just because a player is doing alright each week he isn't in danger of being dropped.

I am sorry but this threat is starting to like a bad case of Deja View and the ‘Biglands’ threat.
And somewhere in France a scholar gently weeps.

My thoughts exactly, players need to prove themselves, and we cannot make a judgement that a player is going to be a good and long term AFL player until first they have shown on the training track, SANFL etc that will take time, as TR said while the best 22 are fit the younger players wont get a game, fortunately though Maric and Meeson will have their chance to prove themselves, but we are never going to play a game with three ruckman so either Messon or Maric will get a gig alongside Hudson, unless Hudo is injuried of course then they will play together, Van Berlo and I think everyones opinion is the only player who we are convinced has made it and will be a fantastic AFL player.

In 10 mths time we can pass judgement, right now in my eyes Massie is holding up nobody and as Nikki said he is competeing with Torney for a spot in the 22, that should be motivation enough for Massie to continue to work hard not only on the track but also on the way he plays.

You could say alot of players are on the AFC list purely as depth players, Stevens???? Torney?????

He played in the 2006 QF against Fremantle, he was dropped in favour of an underdone Mcleod and Burton for the PF, bad move IMO.
