One of the most saddening cases I've read about. It makes you feel genuinely awful to hear that a harmless, innocent young kid was killed – let alone so barbarically.

On 15 March 2004, Donald was abducted from Kenmure Street by five men associated with a local Pakistani gang led by Imran Shahid. The kidnapping was ostensibly revenge for an attack on Shahid at a nightclub in Glasgow city centre the night before by a local white gang, and Donald was chosen as an example of a "white boy from the McCulloch Street area" despite having no involvement in the nightclub attack or in any gang activity.

Donald was taken on a 200-mile journey to Dundee and back while his kidnappers made phone calls looking for a house to take him to. Having no success at this, they returned to Glasgow and took him to the Clyde Walkway, near Celtic Football Club's training ground.
There, they held his arms and stabbed him 13 times. He sustained internal injuries to three arteries, one of his lungs, his liver and a kidney. He was doused in petrol and set on fire as he bled to death.

The five men convicted of the abduction and murder were convicted of racially aggravated offences. After the murder, some of Donald's attackers fled the United Kingdom toPakistan.
The issue of the killing quickly became politicised because of the racial element. After the murder there were reportedly ‘racial tensions’ in the area sufficient to lead to police intervention.

I covered that case. Really lucky that it didn't kick off serious, and I mean serious ethnic violence in Glasgow. Some amazing work was done on both sides - in the local Pakistani Scottish and "white" community, to prevent hotheads getting out of control.

Although he's later denied it, James Allan from Glasvegas once said in an interview that this tune, Flowers and Football Tops, was based on the Donald murder. Awesome tune and even if it is just about the regular senseless murders of young men in Glasgow, it still works for Donald.

He tries to make out he's the "king" of any Pakistani Scots who come in. And there's some white blokes in there who'd obviously love to kill him.

As I recall, he got life but with a minimum for the Donald murder. But I doubt he'll make it out alive.

Wikipedia sez everyone got life, Imran got 25, Zeeshan 23 & Mushtaq 22.

If Shahid had kept his head down, 25 means doing 12 actually and in reality, he could have been back out on the streets, albeit under very strict conditions and curfews, in 10.

As for the bounty, its the Daily Record.

I'd take that with a huge grain of salt.

Someone like Iceman Jamie Stephenson might, coz he killed so many gangsters and has plenty of cash, he might have a bounty, especially if he got put away owing money to HIS dealers - and he was at the stage of dealing straight with the suppliers I believe.

But I can't see why anyone would pay $35k Australian to have Shahid killed. Though there may be reasons I don't know about.

I remembering talking to locals after it happened - guys who were community leaders etc (one now an MSP interestingly) - and they said that Shahid was certainly a criminal - dealing drugs (hash and smack) and standing over local businesses.

In the greater scheme of things, he's an absolute nobody, no great criminal genius or even genuine tough guy.

But when you're an old man asnd you've got him and five of his mates in your local corner shop threatening to smash it all up unless you give him 200 quid ...

Really hope there is a slip up in prison security and this guy gets a painful death... Such a attrotrious and cowardly crime.


An absolute nobody and if he does get out in 10-12 years that would be a shocking outcome for the victim's family.

These kind of things just really get to me. Relating to normal, non-criminal, teenage white kids in countries like Australia hit me hard. And that's why certain cases, like Jill Meagher, get so much interest. It's naive and immature, but I still can't even fathom the notion of killing a completely random kid. Stupid and evil.

Donald and Meagher were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Imagine if an Indian national and 4 of his mates yanked a 15 year old Aussie off the street and drove him from Cranbourne to Geelong and back before murdering him in a field.

As I recall, they actually left Kriss' body by the Clyde walkway no? So, equivalent of dumping it my the Yarra near the MCG.

Near Punt Road would be more apt, considering it was Celtic's training base, not Celtic Park.

Not really. There's sectarian violence up to and including murder before, during and after all Old Firm games.

Disgusting. Life is just potluck. Everywhere you go, you roll a figurative die of chance. Sometimes one's just unfortunate doing even the most mundane, everyday things and end up in a horrific scenario.

Life should be life. Early releases due to good behaviour really sh*ts me because they had a chance to 'behave good' in the past and they blew it. For something as serious as this there shouldn't be second chances. They didn't offer the poor kid one, for sure.
