I'd say the following;

- Not knowing where to lead.
- Not knowing when to lead.
- Not knowing how to create space for yourself.
- Not knowing how to create space for others.
- Not realising that not everyone needs to go up for the mark.

Are coaching issues.
For the best players, this stuff is intuitive. It happens automatically. Throughout their years and years of junior footy they have worked out where they need to be, when they need to be there and what they need to do once they are there.

The issue we have is when a player gets to AFL level without an understanding of this stuff. How much of it can be affected by coaching?

The more I think about it the more I believe that selection (both of the list and of the team week-to-week) is the single most important thing a coaching staff is responsible for.

Completely off topic, but is dividing the team up into Forwards, Midfielders and Defenders the right way to go about things? The performances and functioning of each of these areas are so reliant on the others. Should they be broken down in this way?

The Forwards cannot do their thing unless the midfield are providing adequate supply. The Midfield cannot deliver the ball properly unless the Forwards are presenting well. The Defenders cannot restrict scoring unless the Midfield are pressuring the opposition. The Midfield cannot move the ball quickly unless the Defenders are providing rebound. Etc.

Thinking out loud here, but wouldn't it make more sense to divide the coaching roles up into:
Stoppages
Kick ins (ours and theirs)
Defensive Pressure
Ball Movement
Goal Kicking

All players are involved in stoppages at various stages. All players are involved in kick ins. All players have a responsibility to provide defensive pressure. Etc.
I am pretty sure that we don't actually divide into thse zones. When Craig took over, I distinctly remember him saying that even though they are refered to as forward line coach, midfield coach and defensive coach, they are actually more of a "defensive action", "offensive action" and "stoppages" coaches.

While they would also be in charge of the structures, patterns and set plays of their area, the assistant coach would still be overseeing the entire list for their defensive action or offensive action.

I remember that Paul Hamilton was the "defensive action" coach who also oversaw the defensive structures and patterns. David Noble was the "offensive action coach" but was also in charge of Forward line structures and patterns, while Don Pyke was the stoppages coach. Even though in the media and general public they were referred to as forwards, defenders or midfield coaches.

IIRC, this approach hasn't changed since then, just coaches shuffled around.

I know this suggestion will be recieved by howls of protest but is he what we need?

We need a dominant forward. He is not that. Moran can be, but Tippett needs more work to even get to Moran's level. He is a capable Ruck, but Griffin is better.

If we were to trade Tippett we would get value for him. If we want to be active and trade for a forward or gun midfielder he is the kind of player that other teams want.

We cant expect to get good players in trade period if we only offer our dregs.

Thoughts??
All along Kurt has been touted as the next big Forward. He is young in age and experience. Next year will be a big one for him, if we can get some support and delivery around him. Trade....NO NO NO

Well, KT has his face plastered on the Gold Coast FC's website listed as a "player from the Gold Coast" or something

Personally, if he develops well next year I think it wouldn't be the stupidest thing in the world to jag a couple of their early draft picks if he wants to go home.

My gut instinct tells me he will be in a GC guernsey one day. I haven't heard anything or know anything - it's just me being a realist that when GC open their fat cheque book, a GC local will be far easier for them than trying to get someone like Kruezer (hypothetically).

It is my understanding that the Gold Coast wouldnt have to trade to get Tippett. The AFL would simply put his performance into a mathematical formula, and come out with ONE draft pick for us to be used within 5 years

No way should you trade Tippet, he will be a star

And to rate Moran ahead of Tippet, I don't think so.

He is not your problem, he is your future :thumbsu:

thats correct if he is out of contract, which will almost certainly be the case.

if he leaves we wont get fair compensation as he will still be an up and comer as opposed to established star

True for uncontracted players

But I thought they can also trade some of their 10,000 draft picks for contracted players if they want to. I am sure they won't use them all up on juniors.

Sign him up quick :thumbsu:
