If the mouse pads get dirty or the balls don't get cleaned they don't work so well after a while.

A little anecdote here, for a while I worked as a courier part time for extra money & one of my jobs was picking up plastic bags full of frozen dead white rats to deliver to Monash Uni, it was one of the hardest jobs I ever did, I cried non stop from pick up to delivery & even after I delivered them, if they had have been alive, I can tell you they would never have made their destination.
