Out of the past 3 weeks of carnage, its time for a good news story.

Lachlan Keefe has been outstanding in the first 3 rounds. I for one was concerned about him during the NAB cup and what sort of role he should play. But I think he has gone a long way toward confirming he can mix it with the big boys.

Since the introduction of the sub, most sides need a second ruckman that can play forward instead of sit on the bench & also rotate with the 1st ruck. So far we have seen guys like, Hale, Vickery, Hampson & Kreuzer needing a matchup. With our defensive injuries Keefe has come to the rescue by being able to match these guys in the forward line. There is a number of teams yet to come with a lot of great forward playing talls - Nth, WC & Ess to name a few.

At the minute Keefe is holding the dam wall up in our defense. With Tarrant, Reid & Brown all missing he is going to get match ups that are not ideal. However, once these guys return I think he has proven he can hold his own against certain types of players. This should allow someone like Tarrant & Reid to play in other positions. E.G. Tarrant playing on a small & releasing Harry up the ground or as a leading forward if Dawes is needed in the ruck.

Out of all this mess I think Keefe is the big plus and has the potential to imporve our side on last year.

Re: Lachlan Keefe

yeah he's been good, I was worried at times in the hawks game but give him kudos been very good, if only he learns to second ruck as well, as (imo) he's a better backman that Leroy was in his last year (never rated his backman skills).
Think I'm hoping too much with the ruckman thing but who knows once he's 23/24 and stronger.
Will be really good for rotations either way, and Taz probably only has a year or two left

Re: Lachlan Keefe

has played very well, i agree players coming back will make him better too... could get a rising star award if he keeps it up..

Re: Lachlan Keefe

Who would have thought a 204cm defender would ever work?

Well it has, in fact the sub rule has played right into Lachie's hands, with almost every team having a second 200cm type player in their team after their ruckman, Keefe now has an opponent just about every week.

And with no Reid, Brown or Taz this week, we surely do say "Thank God for Lachie Keefe".

He is one of those players that has stepped up from VFL level to AFL level and yet is performing exactly the same as he did in the VFL. He isn't making any obvious mistakes, and yet at the same time his opponents are seeing very little of the ball.

My favourite moment of that debacle on Friday Night was seeing Lachie out mark Hampson on the wing in a one on one contest.:thumbsu:

Re: Lachlan Keefe

After the NAB Cup I said I never wanna see this player play again for the club but he has stuck it right up me and everyone that said the same. He is going to look dopey and clumsy becuase of his height but his job is to keep key forwards goal less and he has killed Hale and Vickery this year and also played well against the Blues. He is only going to get better with experience.

Re: Lachlan Keefe

Finally...a positive note :)

Keeffe showed a lot of poise against Carlton, particularly when the speed was really hurting us early on. He's a thinker, doesn't poop himself and isn't bad off the boot.

Looking forward to watching him develop for us this year now we're down a couple of peeps down back.

Re: Lachlan Keefe

Has been really really solid under trying circumstances.

I'm amazed we have 4 capable tall defenders when most sides are lucky to have 2. I'm even more amazed 3 of the 4 are injured.

But yeah I've been really critical of Keefe in the past, but he looks like he may finally be starting to 'get it'.

Has amazing disposal, let alone for a guy who has only been playing the game for a few years or so.

Re: Lachlan Keefe

Without Keeffe down there I dread to think what might have happened,on form so far displayed this year he is now the 1st bloke picked down back because he is the only KPD sized defender we have at the moment and he has really stood up well in our best 3 players so far this season and he is giving us something good to talk about.:thumbsu:

Re: Lachlan Keefe

I first saw Lachie Keeffe in the R15 game last year vs Hawks and thought he would struggle at AFL level. Last few games in 2011 sorta confirmed my thinking.

However he started 2012 in ok form during NAB cup and started to find his feet in the Hawks game. Kudos to him...he is certainly one of our good news stories to come out of the season so far. Watched him closely in the Richmond game (as was there live) and started to impressed me...good ball skills and delivery.

With Tazza gone for 3-4w and now Reidy down...Lachie will find himself a regular AFL place.

Lets hope he continues his rapid improvement as this will strength the back-line in the 2nd half of the season.

Well done Lachie !! :thumbsu:

Re: Lachlan Keefe

Said all along the only issue I've had with him is he isn't, or rather wasn't, instinctive in his footy. He actually played like someone new to the game but his last 3 weeks have been very good. Still lots of improvement in him as well, who knows what he could be doing on a footy field in a few years.

Re: Lachlan Keefe

Keeffe has been terrific down back, and if anyone of us doubted his ability to succeed, they would be all too happy to feast on humble pie. He is good overhead, has excellent disposal and has even shown a deal of courage. We have at least one player who has significantly improved already this season.

Re: Lachlan Keefe

Last year he was certainly played out of position. It is good he will get an extended shot in the AFL in defence as I am confident he will continue to improve and become a more attacking defender once his confidence and understanding of the game improves. Despite being 200 plus cm's tall I cant see him being our 2nd ruck but who knows?

Re: Lachlan Keefe

I've come to love how he looks like a deer in headlights with ball in hand but always makes the right decision and uses that kick of his to advantage. Can anyone confirm this that I think I remember malthouse last year saying that he is the best kick in our team? Or in the top 2 or 3?

Re: Lachlan Keefe

Everytime I scream at how awful Harry-O has become, I've been able to cheer on Keefe. Truly makes me less upset about how the season has started.

For whatever reason, Malthouse played him in the forward line everytime he was in the seniors even though he was playing at a key back in every game for the VFL team. Didn't know the position and what to do, he was lost. Why MM persisted, only he knows. Way more comfortable in the backline, and has great kicking skills on either foot.

The reason was because Dawes went down and MM didn't want to move Tarrant or Reid out of the backline, and they needed a key forward to help out Cloke. That was the reason.

as well, keeffe is a break from tradition. you do not play 200cm+ guys in defence. they would be slow, awkward, and generally made a fool of. forward targets is your traditional young beanpole's position. the sub rule & resulting rucking changes has consequently changed that.

forward was the right position for last year. circumstances have meant he has become an option and he has thankfully exceeded expectations to date. it says to me the VFL development is on track and thinking ahead.

maybe mcnamara has a role too ;)

Re: Lachlan Keefe

Good call, thumbs up for Keefe. I doubted he would be good enough and was worried but he has proven me wrong.
