I am a big fan of Keefe. He has heaps of potential and what I like about him most is that when a free kick is given against him he doesn't back chat umpire and doesn't say a word and just gets on with the game. I hope he goes well tomorrow night.

He's playing at a really high level, and being able to play alongside guys like Maxy and Heater who will zone off and help will have helped his confidence enormously. He still lacks mobility to an extent and will get found out at times by more mobile players on the lead, but it's also up to our midfield to apply pressure and impact the delivery coming in. When they're kicking it on his opponent's head, he's doing a tremendous job of killing the forward entry.

He lacks pace and the capacity to make repeated leads as a forward. I agree it has favoured Keeffe with kicking on heads of opposition forwards, but V Franklin and a few others, he got in front position a few times. A man of that height makes it very difficult to outmark from behind.

He's got in good spots and I think he reads the play well, even if it's coming in fairly quickly. Needs a few more seasons to build fitness.

I would love to see Lachie play as a 3rd tall forward and back up ruck this week.

The lions number 1 ruck this week is a 1st year kid.

As a set forward, a la V Carlton last year, he was getting murdered in the contest and 2nd efforts.

However, I like your idea of relief rucking and moving forward as a 3rd tall rather than a fixture. Could really exploit.

Nice background piece on keefey in the age

http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/the-pies-longterm-project-20120511-1yi6k.html

Definitely not the approved pathway to AFL glory.

Those who harp on about his previously slow progress could perhaps pull their head in, the lad is doing bloody well under the circs.
Just read that article and it is a must read it gives a real insight into becoming an AFL player,Lachie starting from where he has has done very well
to get to where he is atm.

The thing I really like about it and him is his diligence re the game how he says he was a boy from a non AFL background and had not really played the game as a kid but when he moved to Melbourne he made the effort to watch as many games and players as he could.

That is a bloody good article and a really interesting read thank you Jon be
for putting that link up and people should read that.:thumbsu:

Ps It also shows the difference in the quality of the writing between the HS and the Age it is just a pity that R Walls writes for them also.

The article is a good read. Keeffe has come a long way to get to where he is now. He must have felt disheartened when training to be a ruckman, coming up against Mumford and West in the VFL. Also loved his comment that he thought some of the big name forwards would beat him, only to discover they were human.

It has always been said that only a 6th grade reading age is required to read the HUN and a Year 10 level for The Age.

I don't think you can be that big of a fan

His improvement has just been phenomenal and the more he grows in confidence the more it will continue.

I was a skeptic and I humbly apologize for being a doubter.

I doubted and moaned about his seeming inability to bring to bear and physicality to a contest.

What really impressed me was when with Reid and Tarrant injured and Brown still coming back he was the last man standing and he indeed stood up and took his game to another level.

Congratulations to the lad and if he keeps the J curve going I see n reason why he couldn't go on and become a genuine ruckman who can also go forward and kick goals.

Really? I can see only one reason why he could, and that is his height.

He hasn't really shown an ability to perform in the ruck (or in the forwardline yet, at this point).

Here's hoping he does though.

he was terrib;e in the ruck last night, against a first year player and a part timer.

Leave him in defence I think, where he has been great.

I don't agree.

I thought he was solid as the back up option and he covers the ground so well.

He is very dangerous in attack as he is capable when the ball hits the deck- see the dish off he gave for Dids' goal.

His aerial ability is sensational too.

It's great that he can play just about anywhere and he has been brilliant in defence but I'm really liking our structure with Keeffe as a 3rd tall forward/back up option. We look far more balanced. Even against the Bulldogs he looked threatening when we put him forward in the last term.

The thing that struck me is that he is a real team player, a lot of one percenters, blocks, likes to share the ball around, really disciplined, never makes it about him or argues with the umpire. Just gets on with it. Another impressive game last night where he showed a bit of versatility.

I still like him best as a defender but there might be occasions where he is more useful elsewhere.

I agree Soul_Pie. His work ethic for doing all the team things is fantastic. Plus he gets better with each game so given its his second game (for 2012) as ruck back up he's going to get better. He'll give us a lot more than Dawes as 2nd ruck and he gives us more around the game than Wood. Its a solid start to him playing that role and I think he'll be significantly better if he continues to come the bye.

We've got some tougher games coming up so we'll get a much better look at him and more of an idea about how confident we can be with him in that role heading into finals.

Yeah, he hasn't drunk his own bath water at all. Not trying to show off his wares but doing everything from a team / percentages point of view.

Really like how he reads the play. I thought in the 2011 NAB he got into some handy spots and was surprised not to see any more of him until he was put out of position against Carlton as a forward. He tried when it hit the deck, but was just not pacey or fit enough.

I can't see him as a starting forward in the foreseeable future, but as Jonesy86 suggested yesterday (?) he could be a valuable releif ruck/floating forward, defender. Very mobile and got reader of play.

With Brown out, I suspect he'll go straight back to defence with Reid. But if Tarrant was ready I'd go with him and Reid on Hawkins/Podsiadly and possibly keep him in 2nd ruck/floating role.

Tell you what though, Goldsack is the ace up the sleeve.

I listened to the Brisbane game on 774 and they gave Keeffe and Goldsack special mention for the huge amount of work they were doing off the ball. Said they were constantly moving their opponents around whilst trying to put themselves in advantageous positions.

Don't get me wrong, he was great. But as far as actual rucking goes, he was terrible.

I'd love nothing more for him to develop into a quality player who can go back OR forward while playing valuable minutes in the ruck - but at this stage, I see him only as a key defender.

Given the rapid rate of his development, nothing suggest he can't becomne a decent ruck/forward though. But on Sat night he made Wood look like Polly Farmer. (ruck contests only)
