Interesting article on a new pro league for Women's AFL.
http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/afl-to-launch-womens-league-in-2017-20150815-gizses.html

I think it would awesome if Collingwood fielded a women's team. Especially with our new training facilities and community centre. If we went all in we might even pick up a couple of early premierships while buckley scrubs it out in the bottom four, give us something to cheer about.

Who will be the our next lady-daicos? A Magpie goddess..
Our next lady Cloke, a beast of a woman who can't kick straight?
The anvil? Utility truck woman..
Pinup calendar magpie girl? Like Brodie holland..
I'm excited lets get on the clubs case to get this happening.

Might be a bit of a distraction for some of our young colts, if they all train together at the Westpac centre;)
Part of that father/son breeding program we need to start up.:drunk:

Seriously though if an AFL women's league is coming up in 2017, we have to field a team, there's more females signing up as new members then men now, so if you bypassed fielding a women's team it could actually hurt your membership numbers.

The sad thing is they won't be paid much - just like all the other sports.
Look at the Australian women's cricket team, soccer etc It's grossly unequal, despite their often greater success.

For me it's a strange concept, supporting a women's football team but I guess I'd follow them. I'm just glad it's not my daughter out there

Where will you line up MG? I've got you as a disciplined half back, with a bit of dash

I watched the game today, skill level wasn't bad at all, was quite a good game to watch, didn't have the congestion that a lot of AFL players have these days, and the tackling and pressure was fierce. We definitely need to get in on it, not sure how many Vic teams there will be though, you don't want to dilute the talent pool too much with heap of teams and I guess the Dogs and Demons will get teams since they've done the early work.

True enough, MG, in the hierarchy of professional competition any women's league will be down the pecking order, below the VFL and well below the AFL. But the exhibition matches have shown that the standard of footy being played would definitely attract interest, and it would also attract sponsorship. More money will mean more resources for women's footy more generally, and that can only improve the fortunes of a women's league in the long term.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean by that bolded bit.

There already is a women's league ... By affiliating the women's teams with AFL teams, creating broadcasting opportunities, creating curtain raiser opportunities ... It'll bring more interest into women's AFL, and with increased interest will come increased money.

I've followed women's footy for a while on and off and the one thing that's abundantly clear is that the talent pool is too shallow to kick start a national competition if you want to have a real crack at setting up such a competition (as opposed to being a side show-level PR exercise for the AFL).
Yes the ladies who run out are willing, but you're not going to get a marketable product any time in the near future, certainly not enough for a *national* women's competition to gain enough traction in order to keep its own head above water financially.

That's not even addressing the issue that the development of girls playing football gets cut off at the knees at age 12 (I think?), which results in the women's competition currently being lower tier amateur grade stuff (pretty much what you'd expect to see from boys as well if they had to stop playing organised football at age 12 and couldn't get back into it until they are 16 or 17).

If the AFL is seriously going to do this then they need to commit from the grass roots level up and they'll probably need to poach heavily from other sports (netball would be a prime target because they require similar physical attributes to play at higher levels).

p.s. That's a rather load-ed poll right there - ifyagetwhatimean...

You have to realize, the reason why these women sports are not being paid equally is due to the fact that they do not bring nearly as much revenue as the mens sports. That's the only reason. If the crowds rise, so will the salaries for these women playing the sport.

All for a women's league, but given the AFL can't support 10 men's teams in Victoria I can't see each AFL club having it's own female side, plus I think the talent would be spread too thin. This then creates a dilemma,
  • comprise the league of new franchises independent of an AFL team and risk minimal interest or
  • comprise the league of select AFL teams and risk not gaining the interest of fans of those teams not involved

Personally I'd take interest in a new independent franchise or support a Collingwood women's team, but I wouldn't get behind a team associated with a rival AFL club.

As long as I don't have to continually hear about the gross inadequacies women athletes face, sure why not.

This happens in a lot of sports.
My son used to love playing netball but at age 12 was forbidden. It's a shame kids just can't keep playing the sports they love for as long as they want to.

Only that football is so physical and a contact sport.
What happens if they get hit in the tit?
It would hurt
