Laidley - opportunity to get a gun tactician???

Laidley's unemployed (no sh.t).

One of his greatest strengths that I have admired from afar was his ability to expose chinks in the gameplans of rival clubs and get the right players into the right spots to prosper. Even with individual match-ups he was capable of spotting advantages certain players could bring against another and use these as special leverages to bring a difference. Another strength was his match-day ability to swing moves that really could make a difference in games. It's spoken that he spends more time than any other coach studying the opposition before games and has the widest knowledge of rivals.

No disrespect to Worsfold or the current coaching committe but I don't see gameday tactics and specific opposition tactics as their greatest strength. I believe that they can develop and inspire players to bring a confident, skillful, positive brand of football to games but there have been a number of instances over the years when movements from the coaching box haven't really come when plan A wasn't working.

My understanding of Laidley's salary was that it was at the lowest end of the coaching scale and most likely our assistants could already be one more. I don't see money being an issue in any approach.

Could Dean Laidley fit the role of a specialist assistant dealing in opposition and gameday tactics? Is he someone who would add that extra dimension to our coaching staff going forward?

Re: Laidley - opportunity to get a gun tactician???

I would be suprised if Laidley was on more than Sumich, i know that Laidley was on less than Harvey as an assistant at Freo.

Re: Laidley - opportunity to get a gun tactician???

Well he would come under the 'favourite son' condition so its a possibility. He'd certainly be a good acquisition for next season so we can start to get the best out of our squad and push for the finals and premiership.

Re: Laidley - opportunity to get a gun tactician???

Would he want to come here for an assistant role??? The top dawg position would be out of reach (atleast for now) I would believe but as an assistant coach I would love him over here. He would be on more money as an assistant over here than a coach over there but I dont see how he would want to leave top level coaching???

Re: Laidley - opportunity to get a gun tactician???

Would love to have him as a tactician, (although I think that is what we employed Walsh for?)

I really dont know why they have got rid of him, no-one could do a better job with the conditions/ list/ injuries the Kangaroos have, surely?

Make him an offer he cant refuse. How many times has he won games simply by identifying the oppositions weaknesses and executing a plan to exploit them?

Re: Laidley - opportunity to get a gun tactician???

I would love to see Laidley at the Eagles as some sort of senior assistant coach. Downgrade Sumich if necessary (which is saying a lot because he was one of my favourite players and I've always defended him).

Laidley could be Woosha's heir. I would love to see what's he's capable of at a rich club.

Re: Laidley - opportunity to get a gun tactician???

Laidley is EXACTLY what the Eagles need on several fronts.
1) He has coaching experience to bring to match day - unlike Burns and Metropolis.
2) He is a good tactician - unlike Worsfold.
3) He has proven coaching ability which might just light a fire under Worsfold.:)

Re: Laidley - opportunity to get a gun tactician???

Is he really a gun tactician?:cool:

He seems to get pretty emotional during games, shouting, throwing phones around and gets that vein popping out the side of his neck.

I think bring Laidley in would be a destabilising influence to be honest. His presence as a young ex head coach would unsettle Suma and Woosha, which I understand is what many posters want to happen, and also undermine Phil Walsh in the Strategic Development role. So what real advantage is there in adding Laidley as an assistant?

Unless Worsfold wanted him on board I can't see it happening.

Would he be on a short list if the head job came up? Yes, definately.

Re: Laidley - opportunity to get a gun tactician???

Hmm - Wouldn't surprise me if he ends up with the main gig somewhere else.

I suspect the emotional journey of a senior coach is substantially different to that of an assistant.

We brought in Daniher...

Re: Laidley - opportunity to get a gun tactician???

What are the options for Laidley
1. Collingwood - no chance, Malthouse re-sign or Buckley.
2. Richmond - Unlikely, a link with Malthouse has rumoured and Rawlings must be a chance if he guides them well throughout the rest of the season.
3. Bulldogs - will re-sign Eade ASAP.
4. Port Power - I good fit IMO although they may seek a local contender.
5. West Coast - have an offer on the table with woosha.
6. Dees - could be a surprise move but again a good fit.

I think most of the football world consider Laidley has been guiding a train wreck and his ability to get his players to respond over the years has been truely remarkable.
Laidley deserves a chance to coach at senior level again and I would be surprised if he does not get a gig somewhere.
I think a few senior coaches would be slightly nervous about the timing of this.

At least Laidley has not gone soft like Terry Wallace did. Terry lost the fire in his belly over the last few years but Laidley has a inner demon that the players respect.

Now this is just a question because I am a huge woosha fan and before last weekend would never entertain he has even one fault, I love the man.

But knowing we are at the bottom end of the ladder when it comes to tackles and the way woosha is defending an under achieving Kerry is he starting to go soft.:o

Someone once wrote that Dean Laidley was like the bloke you see at traffic lights repeatedly punching the button to cross.

That aside, would be a good pick-up.

You know whats funny about the english language...

on afl.com its got a headline "LAIDLEY RESIGNS"
If you put a "-" in between re and signs the story is the complete opposite!

Indeed. Many people here don't grasp that however. It's infuriating.

Re: Laidley - opportunity to get a gun tactician???

He's very much a Malthouse clone and does make a good fist of what he does but I don't think there's much chance of him ending up at West Coast. I know one thing though, if he was coaching us at present he wouldn't be regularly carping on about how Kerr gets treated, like Woosha does.

Re: Laidley - opportunity to get a gun tactician???

The club should do their best to get him. He is a fantastic coach, who did what he could with a poor list IMO. Had bad facilities and was treated not so well with there being lots of rumours about his position within the club and reviews. I know clubs have these reviews all the time but they should be keep quiet.

Positives for him coming to West Coast:
Coming back home to family
Probably a better or similar salary
Much better facilities
And he would be great for the club and the guys to have another different or outside view of where the club is at.
If we have to give Suma the arse to have him so be it!

We brought in Daniher...

Daniher as the Head of Football Operations and he is not a young coach more of a mentor to players as well as the coaching staff.

Totally different to bringing a 7 yr experienced ex senior coach is as an assistant.

As footy operations manager, he has no influence of the coaching of the side what so ever, so Im not sure why you bought that up TBH.

I havent ever seen anything from Laidley to suggest he is a master tactician. His gameplan was always pretty simple, man on man talls up forward.

Nothing out the box IMO.

His one year of greatness, an almighty trouncing in a prelim, came on the back of one of the longest pre-season's North had ever seen.

Re: Laidley - opportunity to get a gun tactician???

Would love to get Laidley :thumbsu:

Seems like the type of guy who wouldn't put up with the sh!t performances of late.

He would tear shreds off players and when fronting the media wouldn't just whip out a few boring quotes - he's got some passion :thumbsu:

Cool. Let's get a bloke with some passion. Danny Frawely had passion, big whoop. I'll take the bloke who knows what he's doing with a proven track record.

Tearing strips off players is great, brilliant for a young side. Hell every time they stuff up, let's roast them. ****ing stupid.

You grill a player for not following through on team rules, taking the easy option or not working hard enough. Im confident Woosh knows when to make the distinction and trust me, he can give a spray, only when it's validated.

Woosh treats the media with contempt for good reason and I dont blame him. I just dont get what some people are expecting.
