If Carlton really have paid Lance Whitnall $650k for next season and we had the room in the cap would we take him?

I know the first thought would be no but you look into he could be handy although not worth $650k. The reason I would be interested in Lance is that he is very tradable from what I hear out of Carlton. Could we get Lance and a 1st rounder for something average? If we could I would take it.

Were not going to win the flag 2005 (we'll come close), I'd say 2006 is our year.

Lance would be in the last year of his contract so you could sign him up for $200-$250k for the seasons after and you have that first round pick as a sweetner for taking Lance, his big macs and salary off their hands. Lance could be serivicable. Carlton really would want the room to chase Goddard etc.

The question really is the difference between a first round pick and something average worth $400k.

I would consider it, a first round draft pick is worth $400k too much, his salary is just for one year. First round picks are gold. We could then pick up Messen and a quality midfielder or defender.

Lance Whitnall

Guernsey Number: 8
Height 190cm
Weight: 101kg
Recruited From: Lalor/Northern U18
Debut: 1997
Date of Birth: 23 August 1979

THE FINE PRINT...
Yet again Whitnall’s season was ruined by injury, this time a training mishap that saw him damage a knee after round 15. Before the setback, he had been used both in attack and defence, but has always looked the part as a strong-marking forward. A return to full fitness and a season without any more injuries would be his wishes in 2004.

Lance goes alright in the bold games. Worth considering if you could get another Bartel, Kelly etc with a first rounder.

it would be like having Menchy back again but with red hair!!!!
But Menschy didnt come to Geelong along with a first round draft pick aka another Bartel, Kelly, Mackie or Tenace.

Why would you take on a contract worth over $600,000 for a player with suspect fitness, desire and performance?

Even if he were to sign up for less the following year, it still wouldn't be worth paying him $650k next year.

Who says Carlton will give up their first rounder anyhow? Just because Lance is tradeable, doesn't mean they're so desperate that they'll give up first round pick so we, or any other team for that matter, will take his contract. Carlton are in a rebuilding phase and would be ridiculous to trade a prized 1st Round pick.

Yeh but with cap room they can have a fair crack at Goddard in the preseason.

#1 pick that has developed for two years > any other pick. saints loose again

How so? Who do you propose they trade to get Goddard over? The Saints won't be pushovers in trading and will demand a fair bit for Goddard. And even if Carlton do manage to nab Goddard, in the process they'd have effectively given up Whitnall, a first round pick, and who knows what else all for him.

Wrong again.

The way things are currently, Carlton are 11th, meaning they'll have pick 6 in the PSD. Not in a good position to pick him at all if Goddard even elected for the draft. He'd be gone before Carlton even got to him.

RH ,
thumbs up for devious, thumbs down for realism.
I think it highly unlikely a club who has missed multiple early draft picks the last couple of years, give away their Round 1 Pick just to relieve SC pressure.
If they want Goddard and are willing to get him at any cost and he wants to come id think they would try to balance his payments up with the end of Whitnalls.Back end his payment, they have done it before. The Saints faced with losing Goddard would do a deal for a R1 pick so they would get what they want without involving the Cats

I do agree however that if it takes paying a huge amount in year 1 to a the right player it should not faze us, just as long as long term he fitted into the overall pay structure of the club longterm

I would be preprared to to trade OUR 1st round pick for Lance .Yes he has had an ordinary year, but i see him more as a full forward. Is he better than Kent Kingsly? I would say yes. Lance will be 26 next year, we went hard for Rawlings who is 27 this year.
The only problem is that i think carlton will want more than our 1st pick.

Lance may sit down one day, have a good hard look at himself and say, "shyte! I've really wasted the talent that I have been given. I can be more than a 'could have been', I need a fresh start, a change of scenery. I need to go to a club where I can develop as an individual within a team as I have something real to contribute. I'm going to give up the maccas, the grog and the gambling, I am dedicate the next few years to reaching my full potential and the best place for doing that might just be Geelong"

Until he does that, I just don't want to know him.

I used to think Lance was a realistic option to solving our forward problems.

But not even the Messiah can fix him.

We don't want him. I say we throw everything at Drew Petrie.

a) Rawlings was coming off career best form

b) Rawlings wanted almost $300,000 less than Lance will apparently earn.
