My mother just received an extremely large redundancy payout and is insisting on sharing a little it with her children.

My sister got 7 grand which she has used on her mortgage... I however have no outstanding loans, my new car is all paid off so I was thinking of getting laser eye surgery to fix my myopia (short sightedness).

Going to a consultation next week to see if I am a candidate, which shouldnt be a problem from what I've read as I am in good health and my eyesight hasn't deteriorated in over a year.

Has anyone here had it? If so, are you happy with the results?

Is there anything I should be aware of?

Had it done years ago. I was -6 in one eye and -5.5 in the other. Completely changed my life. I recommend it to everyone. Of course there are risks and I get halo effect on lights at night but it's still preferable to being practically blind without your glasses.

I was given a couple of valium and some anasthetic drops in my eyes during the procedure. It is a bit disconcerting when they strat zapping away but it's extremely fast.

The benefits for sporting activities is tremendous.

Also remember that any medical expense over $1500 (I think might have changed) can be claimed on your tax return.

Save the remainder of your money if you like or put it in shares or whatever (you're still young though) but definately get this done.

I knew a PHD Physics dude at U of Q who's speciality was Lasers and he always said don't go near Laser Eye surgery

I know a physics person would understand lasers, but I doubt they'd be able to grasp the biology of it all.

Had LASIK done years ago - absolutely life changing.

Didn't have any worries or concerns, the Doctor and staff that did it were fantastic, and I was completely at ease.

The procedure itself is a little uncomfortable, but not a big deal.

Go to the best place you can find - don't try and get it done cheap, it's your eyes.

there was a thread on this about 12 months ago so if you search might find some relevant posts

but agree with all the above : totally life changing

i was -6.5 & -7

if you're used to wearing contacts the gritty feel after the aneathestic wears off wil be bearable & they usually give you lots of drugs anyway to keep you pretty sleepy for at least 24-48 hours

the worst thing is the burn smell = like burning hair - but prob ok if your expecting it

had mine done 11 years ago no probs to date

Hey, the worst thing that could happen is you go blind and cannot post on Bigfooty:cool:

But at least you could start umpiring! :D

Seriously though, I've had customised lasik and highly recommend it to all.

My original comment was regarding the actual procedure. I did have a tough time and fell into the 4% whom struggle early but I had a sleep for a few hours afterwards and my eyes were perfect!

The only tiny, little issue is that I could actually feel the laser working on my eyes. When I told the doctor this between eyes he told me they knew about it but don't disclose it as it would turn people off.

Very great result for such a little time with great discomfort. Again, I highly recommend.
