What I don't get - and what I see as an indictment on the club and players - is how this team approaches 4th quarters.

When we are up by lots (eg last week against Essendon), we seem to switch off and let the other team get some last quarter goals and make the score line look more acceptable. Last week, we were almost 10 goals up close to 3/4 time and ended up winning by just 34 points. We should have won by 90 points, but we let them get a sniff and kick 4-5 goals in a row and get as close as 22 points IIRC before we finally steadied and kicked the last couple.

BUT, when we are losing by lots at 3/4 time, we go on to get completely smashed - a la this week. 44 points down at 3/4 time, and with 6 mins still to play we are down by 87. We'll probably end up going down by 100.

Why does this happen? Why don't Freo teams kick 4-5 last quarter goals to make things look at least a little less like a complete open haemorrhage, but instead just let the opposition completely dominate and score at will? Last week I said to my girlfriend - we'll lose this last quarter and only win by about 30 points. She laughed and said - nah they're miles ahead, they'll kill them.

This trend really, really gives me the shits.

See the Pea Heart thread, or the "you always think you're a chance against Freo" thread or the many other threads started over the many years since Freo (and Bigfooty) came into existence.

Obviously don't value percentage too highly. And I spose it means less chance of an injury. But it is sometimes it's a bit dissapointing.

Most of the time it is cue in the rack type stuff. They'd rather dawdle to the end and not get injured than play out the whole game and that stuff bites you in the arse. We've won 3 out of 12 last quarters, being outscored 364 to 237. Of course this weeks aberration doesn't help those stats (outscored by 45).

As far as this week goes, the last quarter had nothing to do with much. That first quarter was absolutely horrible and basically set us up for a big loss.

On to 4th quarters in general - a bit part of it is the large number of underdone players that we've got running around out there. Not only lots of players coming back from long injuries (through the year that's included players like MZu and Ibbo and now Barlow) it's also our more important players like Fyfe, Hill, Balla and others all struggling badly to run out games. In fact the squad as a whole look very slow come last quarter winning or loosing. Mental thing maybe, but I think there's some genuine physiological issues there too - mostly in fact.

Not only last quarters but I cant recall the last time to play a full 4 quarters. Melbourne smashed us by 90 and also Adelaide by 90 earlier in the year. We seem completely unable to do the same for a very long time now.

It's all between the ears now, it's become a conscious thing now that it's happening frequently and the whole league knows that we know about it. Maybe MJ can share some of his stash with the boys at 3 qtr time from now on and go out and annihilate teams for the final half hour each week.

Man we could use that bye right now..

Its a mental application problem.

We just don't put in 100% effort 100% of the time

But surely these guys are all to some extent ego driven, alpha male types with testosterone and COMPETITIVENESS oozing out of their pores??

Christ knows, I have enough energy/ call it what you like for 4 quarters and some ffs !!!

Very disappointing to fade out yet again

(No slight on Barls here after all it was his 1st game back after a year off)

Ask the Fremantle Football Club for $1 and they'll give you 75c, they just don't have a forth quarter.

Here are the stats on our last quarters this year. Freo's score mentioned first

V Melb 1.2 (8) to 8.5 (53) Loss by 45
V Ess 2.2 (14) to 4.3 (27) Loss by 13
V Haw 1.3 (9) to 8.1 (49) Loss by 40
V STK 3.4 (22) to 3.3 (21) Won by 1
V Port 2.5 (17) to 3.1 (19) Loss by 2
V WC 3.4 (22) to 4.3 (27) Loss by 5
V Rich 1.4 (10) to 6.3 (39) Loss by 29
V WB 3.4 (22) to 4.3 (27) Loss by 5
V NM 4.7 (31) to 5.4 (34) Loss by 3
V Adel 3.2 (20) to 3.3 (21) Loss by 1
V Geel 2.6 (18) to 3.2 (20) Loss by 2
V Bris 5.2 (32) to 4.1 (25) Won by 7

We have only "won" 2 last quarters this year. And I say won as we were really smashed against St Kilda so the last quarter was irrelevant. That leaves our only other last quarter win against Brisbane in round one when they were without Brown.

When you consider we kicked out selves out of a winnable game against Geelong in round 2, and then meekly surrendered games we were in to Richmond and Hawthorn. Also we nearly let Essendon back in when they kicked 5 in a row, starting late in the 3rd.

Yes Freo's last quarters are pathetic and it seems they haven't gotten over that last quarter fade out tag from a couple of seasons ago.

Nice of you to provide accurate stats.

Look at how many close last quarter losses we have. It is hardly a bad thing. The worst are the games at the MCG, two in which we were being beaten and the other in which we were up. Losing a quarter by 1/2/3 points is hardly a fade out. Anyone who thinks so is a complete idiot of the highest order and needs to stop trolling.
