If Hebrew is your first language, then I'm guessing you're Jewish (tell me if I'm way off), so you may be able to help me with something. On Spin City, a rabbi said that Jews don't have Hell, that the Torah is a set of rules for living this life.

So what's the deal with Sheol and The Pit? David mentions these in a couple of Psalms. If they're not a precursor of Hell, as I've taken them to be, then what are they?

If you can't answer this question, the don't sweat it. I wouldn't know all the answers about my religion (Christianity) either. I'll just ask my mate who studied Hebrew.

I hope that you don't find this offensive. It's just idle curiousity.

Firstly i dont find that offensive at all and yeah you were right i am jewish!
Well originally all men lived in "heaven" but than Adam and Eve were banished from the garden of eden and i think that was the time Judaism scrapped the whole idea of heaven and hell.
The Torah and the Talmud etc... are a book of rules telling us how to live our lives but its not that simple. Many of the stories refer to other religions who the Israelities were living among. I'm assuming (i never studied that story in depth) that David was talking about people of the Christian faith when he was telling the story of Sheol and The Pit. He may very well have been talking about hell, but the Torah has this thing of playing with our mind and he may have meant something completely different and we just assume he was talking about hell because it seemed like the most reasonable assumption.
I know im not much help but basically all i can say is that Jews do not believe in heaven or hell, simply because we don't believe that there is such thing as a bad person or a good person, not do we believe in after life!

I cannot understand how they can ditch the whole heaven and hell thing.

It clearly states that it's real in the bible. I guess religions take what the bible says in different ways. I know of religions that don't actually believe in Satan and stuff. I find it really weird because it is stated all throughout the bible. Oh well.

The Bible isn't common to all religions. The only part that's common to both Judaism and Christianity is what is known to Christians as "The Old Testament". The New Testament, which I believe mentions Heaven and Hell a lot more (though I may be wrong), is only found in the Christian Bible.

Then of course there are the differences between the teachings of different denominations, which I am only assuming is the same in Judaism as it is in Christianity.

Islam takes the Torah and the Bible as inspiration (I think), but the Quran (sp?) doesn't actually directly quote them.

Other religions, such as Buddhism, Hinduism etc, have nothing to do with Christianity, Judaism, or Islam, as they were literally created on the other side of the world.

Oh, and DEES_RULE, I don't think David was referring to Christianity, as he predated it by about 1000 years, but your point about other neighbouring faiths is interesting.

ARGHHH! Religion talk..... reminds me of school........ and i just finished! :( ;)
Oh well no more Jewish Studies for me for 6 weeks.... than one more year than units 3 and 4 and than NEVER AGAIN! :)
Mind you i did get an A+ for Jewish Studies in my report so its all good! :D

OI! You guys keep telling me I suck at English so it got rights to show off about other stuff! Besides i got my report today and im really happy coz i did really really really really well and it means i get my membership! :D:D:D
