Lauren Szigeti has played in the VFLW for the past three seasons, representing the Darebin Falcons before signing with Hawthorn ahead of season 2021. A versatile player, she’s been a key ball winner for the Hawks this season.

“I’ve known Lauren for a long time,” Gowans said. “I’ve coached her previously in 2016 in the under 18s. She’s a young talent and has played a lot of footy in her life. Similar to the others in that she hasn’t had the opportunity to play AFLW level but got herself really fit this year. She can play through the three lines, but we see her as more of an inside mid, with perhaps a bit of time in the forward line as well.”

Young guns, mature-age recruits catch the eye on debut
Lauren Szigeti (Sydney, pronounced 'Zi-get-i')

Becoming the first player to debut as co-captain since the AFLW's first season in 2017 wasn't enough for Szigeti, who showed some other teams may regret overlooking her over the past few years. The Hawthorn VFLW recruit has worked hard on her fitness in the past few years, and it showed against St Kilda with 11 disposals, eight clearances and four inside 50s.

PS. caesar88 note Lauren wears a red and white hair tie, whereas Brooke Lochland has no coloured hair tie :)
PPS. I'm learning to identify the players, too.

I was seeing double!!

Until a couple of weeks ago I was confusing Szigeti with Dargan. I find Lochland easy to recognise. When I was thinking that Dargan might be named captain, it turned out I meant Szigeti and she was named captain. There was a video in pre-season where she was demonstrating leadership in a huddle and talking to the rest of the teams and urging them to train hard.

Btw, can anyone confirm that Szigeti goes by the monicker 'Spag'? If 'Spag' is not Szigeti, who is Spag? Does anyone know the backstory to the nickname?

Szigeti, a renowned leader, joined the Swans in 2022 as co-captain and went on to play 20 games in the red and white over her three seasons at the club.

Thanks, Spag, for your massive contribution while you were here! You gave what you had and you will always be an inaugural Swans player. So glad your journey crossed with ours.
