All of the papers this morning are talking about Trenners and whether he is ready to step up to the captaincy... all their information is basically taken from the MFC website yesterday, and there is actually nothing suggested he is 'close to being offered the role' other than the obvious, which is that he is in contention.

Who would you like to see in the Leadership Group next year? I think that if Trenners is definitely next in line for the captaincy, then Greeny deserves one more year as skipper before JT takes over at the start of 2013.

There are many candidates for the leadership group, and I think you will see Neeld start with a fresh group - potentially no more Riv and Flash.

I would love to see Grimesy step us as skipper one day, but he needs to focus on getting fit. I also don't subscribe to the theory that your best players have to be in the leadership group. Chip, Sylvia, Jamar could all be left to their devices to focus on their game; they are leaders without the title anyway, despite Sylvia's off-field transgressions.

My ideal leadership group for 2012 is:
Green (C), Trengove (VC), Moloney (VC), Grimes, Jones, Garland

Strong cases for Frawley, Jamar, Davey, Rivers, McKenzie, even Barty, but I think that this group covers all bases pretty well. Thoughts?

The only thing I don't want is Green as captain, would rather he focused on his own output instead.

Alas, yours looks rather accurate except Frawley will be in there somewhere.

Moloney (c)
Frawley (vc)
Rivers (vc)
Trengove (dvc)
Grimes (dvc)

I think they need a leader in the forward line also.

based on last year's positions you have 3 leaders in defence (sure the ball is down their an awful lot) and 2 in the middle.

I don't think Greeny is the best captain in the world, but I think he will do ok with a young group who know that it is his last year in the role. Also, don't see any other leaders in the forward line at the moment.

I don't think Beamer needs to be given the captaincy. He is, and will continue to be, the 'spiritual' leader of the club. Grew up loving the club, knows the history, no bullsh*t, demands and commands respect.

I would rather Frawley focused on his game, he has enough pressure having to take on the likes of Franklin, Cloke etc. I really like Garland as a smokey for the Leadership Group

fair call, hadn't even noticed that myself.

The problem is who in the forward line would you have? No one really stands out

fwiw I'd like to see Rivers as captain. He is essentially our Nick Maxwell. With Sellar/McDonald coming into potential best 22 as well next year, it leaves Rivers open to marshal the troops from defence while playing as the third man up - the role he loves so much.

fwiw i'd like to see Rivers ousted from the side by the end of the year by a younger, better player. He had his moments in 2011 (game vs Essendon) but i think we could find better within our ranks.

Moloney for me. Is a true on field leader AND was our best player last year.

Trenners is a no-brainer to be added to the group. Grimes... im undecided - clearly his leadership is fantastic, but does he get dropped until he can prove that he has sorted his injuries?

Jamar is a smokey. Cool head, has said he wants to lead, one of our best players, has put in the hard yards to get to where he is now...

Clearly our football department (seasoned professionals who work with Jared every day and scrutinise his every move) and rhaz have considerably different opinions, considering Rivers finished second in our best and fairest this year.

But obviously you have much more of an idea.

Is that the same group of seasoned professionals that, mostly, got the arse at the end of the season?
Matty Warnock says 'hi' too. He came 5th the year before last .....

pjfairbairn seems to have it almost right.

5th isn't 2nd is it Mr Intelligent. And for the record it was 2008 not 2009

I have always respected Riv and the way he goes about his footy, and I think he had a very good 2011, but certainly not in the top 2 at the footy club and no chance to ever be our captain! I don't see the point in having Riv or Flash in the leadership group purely because I see them as having 2-3 years left in the side maximum. We need to create room for Grimesy, Trenners and eventually Wattsy to blossom in this leadership group.

Understand that it is a slight contradiction because I advocate retaining Greeny as captain, but that is because there is nobody else in the forward line who has leadership qualities yet. also because his confidence will probably be smashed if he is stripped of the captaincy after one year. give him a second year and let him retire afterwards.

It is worth remembering that whilst he did not look comfortable in 2011 leading the side, he had an outstanding 2010 and has been a terrific servant to MFC. Deserves better treatment from fans than he gets

I'm bored of a temporary JMac kinda captain. Would we give Beamer the role with him in the knowledge that he'd have it for two years? NO. Would we strip him of it when we thought they were 'ready', NO

Watts actually already displays excellent leadership qualities. I'd like to see him in the leadership group next year.

I know Green had a down year but I'm happy for him to atleast be in the leadership group, in charge of the fwds if not captain.

It seems like he is well aware of his year and I have a funny feeling that if he continues on as captain he will be better for the experience's of his first year. Off topic a bit but how great would 2010 Green be in 2012 with a stronger Watts, Mitch Clarke, Howe, an uninjured RickyB and Jurrah not shackled by the oppositions 3 best defenders.

If not Green, Watts could be a chance, sounds like he is really getting into preseason, physically and vocally.

It was a real fluff piece of an article by the herald sun, for such "experts" they do write some dribble and uninformed crap! This is 2008 all over again when the media talked up Jones as the next captain when he was miles off. He was only being talked up becuase of his on field performance they did not take into account if he actually had the personalty traits and ability to be captain (sidenote he now would be ready and it is 4 years on, but we have other options) If those "experts" looked into it further theyw would of realise McDonald was the perfect choice.

Now it is happening all over again as Trengove is a popular choice, his name is the media and had a really good year. For the reocrd i think he will may a great captain one day and in 3 years time will be perfect option for a long term captain (we appointed Neitz at 25). For mine Moloney is the perfect fit for the next 3-4 years and should of been appointed infront of Green. Rivers will like Moloney will lead the side regardless if they are or are not in the leadership group. I agree with other posters allow Grimes to get his body right and Jamar couldbe a surprise inclusion as he stated early in the preseason he would love to step up in leadership. Frawleys leadership was talked up in the International Rules training. Davey whilst a great mentor to the young indengious players at the club does not show leadership on the field, take the pressure of him and let him concentrate on playing footy.

Moloney - captain
Green and Tregove - VC
Jones Rivers Jamar Frawley - rest of leadership group

I would also keep Grimes in the leadership group. He did win the leardership award just this year. He is a natraul leader and I get the feeling it's something he enjoy.

At worst he can lead the rehab group like a boss :(

Green should be given another chance to be skipper, Moloney and Trengove VC, know a couple of younger players who think Trengove should be captain, the rest of the leadership group depends how many they wanto to include in it but at a guess in order I'd say

Grimes
Jones
Rivers
Frawley
Jamar

Also cannot believe some people are so critical of Rivers, I bet if you talked to chip frawley or garland or the other players in the backline they would give an indication of how good he is and how much he helps those guys out. He's not a huge guy but he's smart and plays his role really well, guys like Sellar and McDonald need to improve a hell of a lot to be taking his spot. Didn't think he deserved 2nd in the BnF but still a required player for at least another 3 years imo
