Cars & Transportation Learners Driving..

Mate, this seriously highlights the exact reason why getting a license these days is a long drawn out process. That has to be one of the most ridiculous things i've read on this website (saying something).

You might be the best driver in the world (and being just off your L's thats very unlikely), fact is there are many drivers on the road that are terrible. Frankly until you've spent years on the road having a few close shaves and sometimes even the odd bingle, you have no idea of what can happen and how to avoid situations.

P platers do stupid dangerous things (like change lanes when approaching intersections while traffic is attempting to turn onto the road) without even thinking.

When I got my license 15 years ago it was way too easy, exactly how you describe really. You got your L's, went in on your 17th birthday and if you passed the test, you got your P's. For the first 6 months i basically drove around pretty ignorant of what happens out on the road.

The more training before people are let lose solo the better
Its very easy to get your L's these days?

No idea, but 15 years ago it was a multiple choice test that if you passed, you got your L's, i suppose it's a bit more technical these days but someone who's just done it will probably expand on that.

My post was more about getting your P's (ie, a license) than getting L's which require you to be supervised when driving

Like I said, why not have a system where at 16 you can get your learners, and whenever you're ready to take the practical test, do it, if you pass you get your drivers license.

Why 16? That's an arbitary figure. You're *clearly* ready to hold a full drivers license. You should have been able to get one at 9.

They are at absolutely no risk. Hell, when I go out driving I consider myself one of the safer drivers on the road. I don't **** around or cut corners.

I haven't got a pilots license. Want to come up for a flight with me? No risk, honest...

Complacency is a key factor in road accidents..

LOL.

My point is that the learners system drags on for far too long, there are some people like myself who NEED to be able to drive for various reasons, for basic things like getting something to eat or getting to work, and these people suffer as a result.

You don't need anything, other than to suck it up.

I got my license at the start of the noughties when the system was changing. You could get L plates at 16 (which had just changed from 16 and 9 months) and sit your driving test for a provisional license at 17. P-plates lasted for 24 months (which had just changed from 12).

Some people think 16 is too young to be on the road, learner or otherwise. Your posts suggest they have a strong case.
