Led v plasma - for viewing afl

Have not purchased a 2012 TV but plasma will always win this discussion. Just handles all the movement, etc that AFL (as well as Rugby, Netball and Soccer) can throw at a TV better as opposed to LCD/LED which can ghost badly.

I know you mentioned a 2012 model but if you can track down a Panasonic GT30 or VT30 or a Samsung D550, D6900 or D8000 you will not be disappointed.

Thanks a lot for that much appreciated.

I am actually gunning for the latest Samsung 2012 LED series which is the E8000, given you think that I would be ok with the older model D8000, I can only draw a conclusion that I will be fine with this model.

I am planning on getting the 65inch.

Im a little excited about this TV. :p

Sorry to mention in your last paragraph for Samsung are you referring to the Plasma or LED?

Thanks much appreciated.:thumbsu:

Plasma is much better for speed where LED (which a LCD with a LED backlight is pretty much) keeps a blue. Only problem with Plasmas is burn in - especially with the footy. The score board burns into the screen for a few mins. Doesnt take long for anything to burn in either.

Some plasmas have Pixel Shift which moves the pixels to try and prevent that.

No worries at all.

Was referring to plasma models. Am sure the LED you are talking about will be a mighty unit but won't handle sport near as well as a plasma and could piss you off badly at times like my otherwise impressive LCD TV does.

Plasmas don't burn in these days. That along with high power consumption and heat are relics of the past.

I've got two plasmas, play PS on them all the time, watch football all the time. Had 1 for about 2 years and the other for close to a year.
You do get image retention with Plasmas though.
Easliy gotten rid of by displaying something else on the TV (like changing the channel) for about 5 secs.

Plasmas for the win

^^ a few myths above.

- Plasma's don't burn in... haven't for some time now. 4 years ago I've read a comprehensive study showing that for plasmas to burn in you would need to have them on the same image for something like 48+ hours. Doesn't happen unless you have a plasma in a public venue like a sports bar etc.

From the same study 4 years ago... plasmas were better for movies, deeper blacks/shadows etc, watching in darker rooms and better for sport (due to refresh rates). LCDs were better for day to day viewing, watching in well lit rooms, but at the time not as good for sport because of refresh rates (around 50Mhz). However, i do believe LCD refresh rates have since improved to at least 100 Mhz which helps for fast live sport action. Plasmas also normally come in the bigger sizes and LCDs smaller.

HTH

Thanks Kaysee, the Samsung LED 65 inch E8000 has a refresh rate of 200mHz which I am assuming would be fine.

With that in pubs then I assume those TV are all plasmas, as I havent see any issues with the broadcast ?

Even the top of the line samsung 200hz LED backlight LCD's & CFL LCD's were a let down when watching footy (tv shopping with/for relatives before buying mine was a perfect test mule)
Once I'd seen the footy on the supposedly improved 200hz LCD's, I went with a Panasonic (2011 3D) PLASMA.
Still to this day, much better for watching footy as the ball in flight & general panning look rather clear. I don't think you can make the ball out much on an LCD.
We do have a 32inch led/lcd in the bedroom though.

I watched a netball game on the LED TV in the store and it looked fine to me.

Does it depend on the sport?
It can. Netball on OneHD will look miles better than AFL on seven. AFL has a fair bit more going on the screen, is broadcast outside etc. If you saw the Blues Done game on an LED you wouldn't even still be tossing up. Trust us, get a plasma.

If you are going to go down the path of LED, make sure you get the least Millisecond refresh rate you can afford. Mine is 2 but I'm pretty sure you can get 1's now.

I have no ghosting watching the footy as opposed to the higher ms TV's..

200mHz is not a refresh rate but rather a frequency.

However the refresh rate is important when it comes to LED TV's...the lower the better.

I have a 2ms refresh rate TV and I don't get the ghosting issues other LED tv's do..

no brainer. plasma. deeper blacks. higher contrast. smoother motion. more natural colours and skin tones. larger viewing angle.

This.
Plasma for sure. Samsung 8 series or Panasonic equivalent is the way to go for TV and movies sport or no sport

I've had a plasma TV for a really long time and it does have very deep black and the quality is as good as people say. But, I would say get a plasma only if you have good light settings. I could only sense its great quality when I make my living room really dark like in the movie theater.

Plasmas are way better (spoken from someone who works in the field)

They are able to handle the motion of sports alot better, better colour reproduction, better contrast ratio ect.

The Panasonic Plasma range is the way to go
Don't agree, LED TV's have come along way since their inception.
I get absolutely no ghosting or pixelation watching the Footy on my Philips 47' nor does my cheap Sansui LED I bought for $250 new..

is the 75 inch samsung @$9.5k a rip off?

when you consider that the 65 inch is about $5k you are paying $5k for only 10 inches, lol thats what she said! ;)

I was thinking of getting myself a small present!
