I have concerns regarding Lee's pace; in the games that I've seen him play he seems to struggle keeping up with the forward. I'm not sure if this is actually a lack of pace, lack of concentration, inexperience or being unable to read the play. He has the height to fill a spot down back but does he have the finer points required to play on the 2nd/3rd tall?

So that means we could have nabbed Selwood if we gave them up.

What a massive mistake! ..... in hindsight.

Hmm is that 100% true? Would have meant we could have snapped up Selwood or even Thorp who I think is a super talent and perhaps back in 2006 would have been the guy we were after to develop at CHB and Gumbleton at CHF.
Sheedy claimed we would have taken Selwood had the rules not have changed regarding the priority picks, however Thorp seems the player sheeds would have loved to have picked. I love Joel Selwood as well, he is almost my favourite player outside Essendon, so both would have been terrific.

Either way Monfries and Lee might break out in 2008, I think both have the talent to do so.
Lee seems a major confidence player, and if Knights has faith in him, and he keeps working hard we could see a much better year out of him then in 2007. Monfries game against Carlton gave me hope back that he can become a fantastic on baller for us.

i was a huge fan of johns a few years ago and it seems that for one reason or another he cant perform better than a return of 2 or 3 goals and with he and lee being injured so often i think we need to look at a new prospect. Johns in the backline made me mad because he always had a lot of promise as a ff and gumby at chf.It was like the partnership of lloyd and lucas for the future
3 goals a game isn't that bad
Particularly with the way he gets treated by the mids kicking it to him, and a certain other forward... who shall remain nameless... who cuts across his lead about twice a match
Johns would kick plenty of goals if he played for Port Adelaide or WCE right now

FWIW, his first 13 games - in woeful sides of 06-07 - yielded more marks, possessions and goals than Jon Brown's first 13 games in a fairly decent side. When assessing CJ, don't be blinded by the brilliance of Lloyd and Lucas. Few forwards of this era will measure up to those two, Courntey probably won't - but that's not to say he can't be a decent footballer for us

You make a fair point there but if Johns doesnt improve a hell of alot on his endurance and mobility then theres really no point having him in our forward line. The modern game is all bout run and with the new looking defences (run and carry out of the backline) then Johns wouldnt stand a chance. Hes more of a player you just bomb the ball to and hope for the best as he has a strong body and great hands and also because he doesnt offer a lot of decent leads.

Agree on what he needs to improve - & I think it has improved noticably from 05 (when he shouldn't have played at all) to 06 to 07.
& He certainly makes more attempts to chase his man than afore-mentioned left footer

The "modern game" thing is a bit of a Herald Sun beat-up IMHO. You still need big guys who can take a grab - & if you put the ball through the big sticks, then you don't need to worry about how well the opposition back-line carries the ball out coz' the umps will do it for them ;). He's a bit more rounded than purely being a marking target as well - he went OK as a backman for Bendigo, which is another string to his bow

I actually think John's has a good lead. His second efforts weren't there though. Slattery_20 is right in saying he was sometimes ignored when he was the best option with the midfield who were too Lucas / Lloyd focused. His sprint times were actually quite good (one of the fastest in the club last year). Pity it's always in a straight line. Also a pity he's got lower leg problems this pre-season. He really needs all the fitness / mobility work he can get to make it. I do hope he will take a step up this year - he needs to to keep his spot.

In my post, i said he doesnt offer a lot of good leads meaning he may offer one or two great ones, but he doesnt consistently offer decent leads like a Lloyd or a Reiwolt.

Never seen Lee play a game so I can't really comment on him too much.

Johns on the other hand is getting pushed further down the list. I don't see him as a defender, and the likes of Gumbleton and Neagle are now starting to get chosen in front of him as a key forward.

How great will it be in 2008, with all the young gun players we have it is going to be an exiciting brand of footy we will be playing.

From what ive heard, Johns is still doing modified training and i dont think he even has an injury. If someone could clarify this is would be great because if its true, then he musnt bee traveling to well.

I saw lee a couple of times, and I thought to myself why havent I seen this guy since.

Johns has been in the system for a while and you would think this year is his very very last chance

Windas_Magic: Johns' hip will restrict some parts of his training routines for his whole career I think. Heard Quinn discuss it on SEN ages ago, no-one's really sure how well or how long it'll hold up. He is able to do a lot of training, just different sorts (IIRC less running, more bike & swim)

Kouta_legend: I must say it is refreshing to see a post from a Carlton/Hawthorn/Collingwood supporter that isn't trolling crap. Lee had a messed up pre-season last year, then struggled in the VFL for the rest of the year. Pretty much a wipe-out

Johns shots on goal seem pretty suspect also. But comparing to Lloyd and Lucas from fifty makes it hard.

I witnessed him kick 8 straight from every kind of angle against The bullants in the VFL. He also looked good at patches when shooting for goal in the AFL. 2006 was different.

If we dont keep Johns another club ie Geelong will have him. He would kill it there. The same at the dogs. He is a key focus leading forward..We habe two of the highest quality already. Gumbleton hasnt done more..Everybody just wants a move on with him cos he was pick 2.

His set shots where fine last year. They worked on his kicking style a bit at the start of last season to get him kicking thouigh the ball properly. He hardly missed last year.

Do you know what I hated last year, it was how sheedy played C.Johns down at the back pocket. It frustrated me so much that when sitting in the cheer squad, you'd try to "start" Courtney Johns instead of his opponent.

We wouldn't say like "your Sh*t Courtney, get off the ground"
We'd say something like "what the F*ck are you doing in the backline CJ, Move up forward you D*ck."
