I am continually stunned by the crowds this crappy venue continues to draw despite their side being on the fringes of the 8. Last time i looked Tigers crowds were up the most in the NRL, some 37%.

Maybe 2 homes is the future for them after all, with an upgrage of Leichhardt. 19k+ today, must be about the 4th time this year there's been a ground record there. They didnt even get that many when Balmain were in their prime.

Well done tigers!!

Yeah they put a request in to the state goverment for it to be done up, hopefully it will be accepted. in other news they hammered the rabbitohs who up to this game seem to have the wood over the tigers. :D

Just think how big some of their crowds would be if they played at a world class venue instead of a white ant infested park bench stadium!!!

Great news to hear last week that they are taking a few big games to Homebush Bay!!

About as good as the Dragons at the SFS!!!

Sydney is tribal. We're more of a London than a Melbourne when it comes to homegrounds. And the kind of commitment it took to change that attitude in Melbourne wouldn't be worth the NRL's time.

Don't get me wrong. I no longer argue for NRL in Sydney to become more like AFL in Melbourne as I once did. A season full of neutral games at neutral venues is throwing away the traditional tribal support, which so excites fans. However, I still see a role for the bigger neutral venues like TS and SFS to host a regular series of blockbusters throughout the season.

Even the finals crowds are seriously affected on ocassions. Imagine the first week of finals seeing, eg the Dragons at home to the Bulldogs at either WIN or Oki Doki. A 16000 sellout as opposed to a guaranteed 42000 sellout at SFS.

They've had trouble getting people through the gates at the neutral venues before, including the finals (About 25,000 payed for their tickets to the Prelim Sharks Vs Warriors in '02. NOT impressive!). Though I do agree with weekly blockbusters being played at Telstra and Aussie.

They don't necessarily have to be weekly.

A good example is South Sydney v St George and St George v South Sydney. This game should always be played at the SCG, and I think it will be. That's great news.

What I hate seeing is blockbusters like St George v Canterbury at WIN Stadium or Oki Doki Stadium. That sort of game should always be switched to SFS or TS, especially at the moment with both teams as premiership threats.

Parramatta has no need to ever switch blockbusters, but other teams with huge supporter bases like Wests Tigers clearly do. And they are in 2005, which is great news.

been there done that, the crowds the SFS pulls are abysmal. The reason they now get crowds is because they are back at Kogorah, nothing to do with the 'world class' facilities, its as Hurbie said, about tribalism and tradition. SL tried to wipe that and look what happened. They'd be better off putting long term plans in place to upgrade the stadium before even contemplating a move to Moore Park.

oh ok saw the bit about one off... still i think the supporters would rather their home ground. If Manly were packing out Brookvale to the hilt every week with 20k, i'd much rather that than 25-30k and play out at the SFS.

Yeah agree with you that a permanent move is silly, but one-off games like St G v Cant would benefit from a switch to SFS.

If Manly were going through an era like the mid/late 90s coming up against the current awesome Canterbury side, then that is exactly the sort of game Manly should be switching to the SFS or TS at any stage of the season.

I dont think many supporters at all would agree with you.

As a Doggie man and knowing a lot of Doggie supporters... We like the mix of 6 at Telstra for the Big games and 6 at a smaller venue for the smaller games BUT the venue of the Showground is the worst in RL and most fans refuse to go there... 6 at Telstra & 6 at Belmore will be ideal... But seeing as though Belmore is out of the question we need to look to stadiums like Concord or something!

I was almost going to qualify that with saying the exeption of teams like the Bulldogs, whose home ground is really lacking IMO.

If the Dogs figure they have about 6 games up for grabs by various venues it gives them the chance to play each venue (such as Express Advocate, Parra Stad, Campbelltown etc) off against each other to get the best financial deal.

On the other hand, playing those 6 games at Express Advocate could be rewarding for everybody? eg give CC fans a de facto team to support, give the Dogs a chance to increase revenue for out of town teams and maybe grow their supporter base = win/win.

Or they could commit to future Wellington games (might get NRL support for that if the Orcas are considered a realistic expansion target) and also a Perth game (the Dogs could market their brand over there). That leaves only 4 games for Sydney venues.

The Tigers playing Souths always draws a big crowd at Leichhardt. I think it brings back the traditions of the old days. Plus being at an inner city venue, both sets of supporters flock to the ground.

The thing I used to hate at Leichhardt was the fact that when something happened and everyone stood up on the hill, you could never see a thing and had to stand up as well.

Agree with you JF, and I was there at the game....

The funny thing is that a lot of people here say that there is no tradition or passion in RL anymore..

I like the atmosphere of Leichhardt, but it isn't the easiest ground to get to/from if you don't live in the area. I made the mistake of driving there once - I think I spent longer getting out of the carpark than watching the game ;).

It is actually a great venue for the beautiful game as well.

Why Sydney Olympic moved from there, I'll never know.

If you want more people at the ground, just pack more dirt onto the hill....

make it a mini mountain.

if you want to give people a sense of safety, tear down the rotting stands and pack dirt there.

dirt is very safe....in fact dirt is one of the most resillient and safe things in the entire planet....it is invulnerable practically, effected only by salt salinity and radiocative materials.

you's could bring it in by the pocketfull, and that way, save on stadium expansion.

fantastic ground, yeh right....if you were living in 1950!

sorry its just a joke. the ground i mean....not the post...

Now, where have I heard THAT idea before? A bigger hill to hold more fans? Hmmm.

I think somebody is stealing a certain somebodys ideas. And its a great one. Even if the fake grass thing didnt get a reaction.

dirt is too expensive. It would be more practical to build up the hill with the local resident's waste. Doubles as landfill AND increases the grounds capacity. Besides, rotting compost is softer and safer than dirt.
