Dermie on Ch 9 on the weekend commented early in the game that Leppa wasn't switched on. Can't afford for anyone not to be switched on....it will spread through the team like the plague. Like it did in 98, where a team with players such as Leppa, Voss, Aker, Lappin finished last.

Definately well below par on Sunday. With the Crows and Port moving up the ladder, and a prelim in Vic, a top 2 finish is not satisfactory, we must aim to finish top at the end of the home and away.

Lucky not to have got done through complacency. We can't afford to risk 4 points through not being switched on. A top of the ladder finish is too important.

Wake up Leppa and Lions....u too Matthews, trying to put a positive spin on a Pi$$ poor performance.

i do agree to some extent very disapointing effort .we cannot finish sides at the moment we get on top and then coast .far too much fancy stuff which will come unstuck soon . lets shake it up lads and get fair dinkum

4 points is 4 points. On top of the ladder after 5 rounds with wins over Essendon, Collingwood and Port Adelaide - teams which will finish in the top 8.
Not too worried at the moment.

Tend to agree - the BIG game will be v Blues at PP. We want revenge big time. There is NOTHING better that flogging Carlton at PP - except in the GF. I'm expecting no mercy there.

you can not expect individual players, or for that matter a team, to be switched on for 25 games a season.

i'd suggest that 4.5/5 and on top after 5 rounds with a few injuries, late season starters, a couple of virtually new blooded kids (mcgrath, brennan), and only firing on 5 out of 8 cylinders, things are pretty bloody good.

The inside word has it that Leppa had some kind of virius, wasn't feeling 100 %. I guess your allowed a bad game every now and then.

cheers ... Kaz

Seems he vomited at half time. Didn't think our first half was quite that bad. Then he appears to have strained a groin muscle in the second half.

Really doubt that complacency will be an issue with our players. Firstly, Matthews wouldn't allow it. Secondly, they have so much to aim for and this may be their only chance to achieve it. Thirdly, they have enormous collective pride in their performances. Let's hope so anyway.

Hmm well considering that we played in Adelaide and also Melbourne, I would have to say Im super happy with no losses. I would have looked at the draw at the end of the yr and been happy with 1/2 wins and 1/2 losses.
To expect us to flog all teams, Is bigheaded. A win is a win.

Come on Mav. We were NEVER going to lose that game.

We could have flogged them by 10 goals or more if we wanted to but why bother?.

I agree it's boring watching us go into cruise control and frustrating to see oppositions score easy goals in junk time. That's only because it's more fun to see us go full throttle and really "bury" them.

Yet if you use your head, it's not really that clever to use petrol tickets in the interest of showing off.

I think the team learned a lot from 1999.

We had all sorts of fun racking up huge scores and humiliating all comers. Best percentage in the AFL at the end of the H&A season by a long way.

Then we had a ball in the semi at the Gabba by trouncing the Blues by some colossal margin ............by going full throttle for the whole game. In the process we lost key personnel for the PF from injury (including Voss) and suspension (including C.Scott if my memory serves me correctly)

Next week a tired, below full strength Lions oufit got hammered by the Kangas and all our percentage, record margins and H&A form counted for zip.

It's not that exciting but I much preferred our Premiership winning, steady as she goes approach in 2001 and 2002 than the thrill and spill a minute ride we got in 1999.

Be patient. September will get here soon enough.

In the meantime, I for one am happy with boring wins.

Much better than exciting losses.

I also think they learned a lot from that loss we had to Melbourne at the Gabba last year.

We had the Dees easily beaten at least twice.

The reason we ended up losing is because the boys got overconfident and all kept running forward of the ball in search of fame, glory and joining the list of goal-scorers.

Melbourne suddenly got hot in the clearances from the centre and racked up 4 or 5 or more on the trot (at least twice after quarter time).

Their midfielders had enough time to have a raffle to decide which one of them was going to deliver the pill to Neitz on the lead.

A forward as good as Neitz is going to murder any fullback in the League if he is given half a football field to lead to. It made me laugh when certain critics were proclaiming that Neitz "killed" Leppitsch in that game. It was our own on-ballers' irresponsibility and unaccountability that "killed" Leppa in that game.

We still run forward of the ball at the centre bounce when we have a good lead but since that loss to Melbourne, it doesn't keep happening if the bad guys kick 2 or 3 on the trot.

Nowadays, if they even look like threatining us on the scoreboard , we stabilise, get numbers back and at worst keep a 4 to 5 goal buffer.

That's more than enough to get a comfortable win.

Might be boring but it beats the crap out of losing by 2 goals when everyone was expecting a 10 goal win.
