Libby Lenton became the first ever female swimmer to break the 53 second barrier in the 100m freestyle.
Lenton, swimming an exhibition in Sydney called 'The Duel in the Pool' for Australia against the United States, lead off in the relay, head to head with Michael Phelps, who swam the 100 in 47.82 or 48.72 (cant remember which one it was exactly).
Lenton feared that the record would not stand as it was not an official swim meet, but the head of the Australian Swimming called the head of FINA Technical (who is also Australian) and asked why the result would not stand.
Given that Phelps swam the race properly, and was going flat out, both parties cannot see why the record wont stand, and Lenton should officially be crowned as the first ever female to break 53.
