Lids V's Goddard

In terms of individual skills, Deledio can do everything Goddard can do (and better in many cases). But what Goddard can do is drag his team over the line by the balls. The only time I've ever seen Deledio really step up and drag us over the line was the Adelaide game this year.

Don't forget Goddard took quite a while to break free from the shadow of Judd and Hodge. Was roundly bagged for quite a few years for being taken at No 1.
Now look at him.
Drafted in 2003, didn't really even look like an AFL player until 2006.

Not sure why the comparison with Judd and Hodge - it was Ball that was taken in that draft.

Never heard anyone compare him to those two. FWIW, Goddard is equal to Hodge, even before Saturdays game.

Goddard in the gf draw played alongside:

hayes, riewoldt, dal santo, fisher, gardiner, baker, schnieder, montagna etc.
senior players who are more or less older than goddard. Goddard has been part of a strong st kilda sid under both thomas which used to pump sides by 10+ goal each weak and a mature side now.

Deledio is in a team of very young players and a side who has been rubbish the entire afl life of him. in the first win of the years vs. Port in Deledo team was the like of Martin, Griffiths, Astbury, Webberly, Nason, Colins etc. player much younger than him, many first year.

more so, deledio is 2 years younger than goddard. not a fair comparison imo. give deledio a couple more years to allow the team he plays in to be better imo

I want Lids to morph into the next Goddard.
Plays everywhere, takes the game into his own hands, an absolute matchwinner and star.

Praying that with a better side and a few more years he can be that player for us.

I'm a major Deledio believer but Goddard's form at the moment and in particular in the GF was epic.

One game this year Lids played a similar 'took control around half back & drove us to victory' type game... was it against The Crows?

Previous posts are on the money though... Lids is younger and in a crapier line-up so a little unfair just yet but certainly he can look at Goddard as some sort of a performance benchmark I guess. (Though I still hope/expect to see Lids back in the middle in teh next year or two...)
