As we found out tonight (Friday 11th April) life without our two linchpins in the forward line is going to be very tough as these are two of the best forwards in the comp.

We need players to come in and cover their places. Yes indeed we have Gumbleton but he is still a long way off. Yes we have McPhee, but he is never going to be a permanant forward target, Laycock does not have the engine to keep going all day and Hille is resting as a ruckmen. Ryder is a ruckmen that has developed that niche to play down back when resting when not in the ruck. And Courtney Johns, well so much was said about this huge mountain of a man, and he has had plenty of oppurtunites, if his time was now, then why was he not picked in the side that did not comtain one of lloyd or lucas.

Any ways back to my point, this year what do we look for in trade week, A tall AFL ready forward, I am thinking someone from the Hawks, A Beau Dowler or a Max Bailey, Mitch Thorpe. What about someone like Fergus Watts, What ever happened to him, would be perfect fit for the bombers, Any other players that would fit in with the knew gameplan that are young and we could possibly lure to windy hill. and a trade deal that may suit.

No I thought we functioned quite well without them. Shows you that we are in good stead for the future even with none of the young guns playing and the older champions out.

We don't need to trade for a foward, Llloyd and Lucas both have aaround 3 years left in them, enough time for neagle or gumby to develop into decent options, the only reason we had no actuall tall foward tonight was because of a freak run with injuries.

Also i believed that tonight McPhee was a bit of a liability, far to slow when taking it inside 50 and his kicking for goal has been rather bad.

I am only saying that as we need cover for this situation. we didnt really even give one of the future forward prospects a go. Pears did play, but limited time on the ground and on the flanks really arent gonna helo him. I woulkd think it would be wise to go after a young developed forward such as a Beau Dowler or a Max Bailey. That way we have some depth and also some AFL ready forwards if Lloyd and lucas were to go down again.

Is just my opinion, think what you may.

Firstly dowler has barely played for hawks so i would hardly call him a developed foward (unless im thinking of mustin) and bailey is a ruck i believe.

While it would be good to have a back up plan for when these rare situations occur i didn't think we struggled to much without having a key foward to kick to.

One of, if not the, worst suggestions ever made on Bigfooty.

He effectively got replaced by Charlie Gardiner. Answer your question?

The odds of us having 4 of our 1st 5 forward targets injured on any given weekend were pretty slim I would have thought. As time goes on, you'll see these young guys start to get games and will realise that in fact, Gumbie might actually go alright, Neagle might snaffle a goal or two.

Possibly the dumbest suggestion going around, hot on the heels of a thread suggesting we couldn't get rid of Lloyd and Lucas quickly enough, to fit Gumbie & Neagle in!

I enjoyed watching Essendon tonight but can you tell me why Laycock is being perservered with? Is it because he can ruck abit and play forward a bit while the other options although better in attack are poorer in the ruck?

laycock was disappointing tonight but something did happen to him which forced him off the ground. he has shown ability and is worth persisting with for the time being.

our options up forward are limited as most of our big blokes have been injured. the inj list at efc is now the longest in the comp.

Life without Lloyd and Lucas last night looked promising and showed we are not as one dimensional as i originally suspected.

Hille can go forward when not rucking and is very dangerous... but Laycock on the other hand  and IMO McPhee can hold down the centre half forward position well enough.

it looks like the future for the bombers is pretty bright

i mean, daniher, gumbleton, neagle. none of them played yesterday

yeh. we do need a key forward but i dont think Fergus Watts is the answer. he promised big things when he was at adelaide. then went to St Kilda and did nothing when they had all those injuries last year. he stil couldn't get a game. Mitch Thorpe would b good, but no way would Hawthorn get rid of him

I am only suggesting players as Lloyd and Lucas are not going to be around forever, Yes Gumbleton is going to be a superb forward when he is fit and developed. last night was promising through the midfield but we are not going to win a flag with a mid sized utility and a resting ruckmen along with an army of fleet footed midfielders/forwards, This is why i am suggesting we look to the future. a player like fergus watts a round one draft pick a big forward, young, why would we not want someone like him could fit the bill as a back up forward.

As for laycock, he is a solid player will never be outstanding, but until the likes of Bellchambers and co are developed.

Another player we need is an inside midfielder, alot of talk about a young west australian by the name of Daniel Rich, the best prospect since one Chris Judd the west australians think. Uses it well, knows the game and is apparently afl ready now.

With the bombers not going to be a force for another few years we may just well finish down the wrong end of the table again and this Daniel Rich available this year, should we go after him as we need inside mids or a different type of player.

We don't need any more KPP forwards prospects.

Fergus Watts is a dud and didn't make it at Adelaide or StKilda.

courtney johns is better than fergus watts. at least johns can get a kick at vfl level unlike watts.

we don't need to recuit any more key forwards right now (especially proven duds). we have lucas, lloyd, gumby, neagle, hooker, daniher, johns all on our list, it was a shame that none of these guys were considered ready to play this week.

Not having Lloyd and Lucas playing last night may have been the best thing to happen for your club. Obviously they are great players and probably would have got you over the line, but it forced you to play a more exhiliarating and unoredicatable style of footy.

I thought we were a quick side but sheesh...your blokes are like lightening. One passage in the second quarter had Lovett running into goal with Griffen on his hammer and Griffen couldn't make any impression. Apart rom injuries last night I thought we dominated the centre clearances and made better choices in the last quarter. Some level heads amongst Cooney, Cross and Aker certainly helped.

Good luck...exciting times ahead for you guys. Look forward to the re-match.

Another key forward is one of the last things we need; Lloyd, Lucas, Neagle and Gumbleton are more than suffice, and we've got plenty of options to supplement them.

If we're going to chase a ready made player, it would have to be an inside midfielder.

However, you wouldn't want to get a player any older than 26, and you don't want anyone that's just average.

In the end, barring an extremely unlikely circumstance, we'd have to give up our young talent for anyone with time on the ticker and ability, and that doesn't particularly appeal to me.

Your mail on Daniel Rich is right but he will go top 4 picks. With Carlton, Melb and maybe Rich all struggling to win a few, there will be a few priority picks up for grabs. We wont be bottom 3 but lets say bottom 5 for arguements sake, it puts us around pick 6-8. Rich wont be there.
