Third year Rookie List player Luke Weller continued his outstanding state league form with a blinder at Broadbeach yesterday, although it was not enough to help the Lions to victory.
Weller has been among the reserves’ best each week of the local premiership season despite a lengthy layoff over summer due to a shoulder reconstruction. Despite his superb efforts over the first seven weeks, Round 8 was even better according to coach Brittain.
“He was clearly our best player – he was absolutely superb,” Brittain said.
Weller held down centre-half-forward all day and was one of the major reasons why his side had enjoyed six more scoring shots to three-quarter-time. Unfortunately for the plucky side, they only led by six points and were overpowered in the final term.
Cats skipper Kory Fulton booted a matchwinning six goals from full-forward. He was matched by the emerging Jason Gram, who combined defensive duties with stints on the ball.
Gram’s unusual assignment was a result of the Lions having just eight listed players available, so their effort to stay in touch throughout the day was exceptional.
While Weller dominated, he received great assistance from raw youngster Daniel Merrett, who has produced his best fortnight of football.
Merrett was strong at the contest in the ruck and around the ground, and showed further glimpses why the Lions drafted him with just 12 months’ football experience under his belt.
Despite the contest being quite scrappy and played often in the clinches, the lightly framed Troy Selwood continued his good form. Listed among the senior emergencies for the first time leading up to the weekend, he took plenty of buffeting but still finished the game strongly and ran hard to create the loose man.
Regular centreman Jarrad Wright travelled to Melbourne with the seniors and appeared a little sluggish early. He committed himself 100 percent as usual and spent much of the day at half-forward.
Regular goalkicking midfielder Joel Macdonald played at centre-half-back and was solid all day, while close-checking Kevin Tandogac was also good in defence.
Decorated former under 18 player Paul Shelton played his first game in six weeks after knee surgery and was rusty early, but improved as the game wore on in a good sign for the future.
The Lions Reserves play Morningside at Esplen Oval on Saturday to complete the first round of fixtures.
Scores:
Broadbeach, 3-2, 5-4, 7-7, 11-11-77
Lions Reserves, 2-0, 5-9, 7-13, 8-15-63
Goals, Cats: Fulton 6, Knight 3, Owens, Burgess. Lions: Crowther 2, Wright 2, Burrs, Weller, Shelton, Selwood.
Best, Cats: Fulton, Burgess, Carland, Knight. Lions: Weller, Merrett, Selwood, Tandogac.
cheers ... Kaz
