He was initially recruited by the Brisbane Lions from East Perth, where he spent much of his time as a forward. Picked up at number 18 in the 2003 draft, Spaanderman spent much of the 2004 season playing in the AFLQ. Round 6 of season 2005 marked his Australian Football League debut where he made little impact against Essendon.
During his time with the Brisbane Lions (2004 and 2005), Spaanderman played 3 senior games for 1 goal, 12 disposals, 4 hit outs and a solitary tackle. His best game, statistically, was in Round 20, 2005 against Sydney, when he racked up 6 possessions and kicked his first goal. Unfortunately for him, the Brisbane Lions sacked him following the 2005 season, leaving him to play for East Perth during 2006.
Spaanderman had a very good season with East Perth, where he matched up well on opponents such as Michael Gardiner and Daniel Bandy. His successful season eventuated in success, as Spaanderman was given a second chance in AFL football - picked up at selection 31 in the 2006 Rookie Draft by the West Coast Eagles. During his time at the Eagles, Spaanderman was found guilty of aggravated burglary relating to an instance that took part prior to his recruitment by the Eagles.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Llane_Spaanderman#cite_note-1 At the end of 2007, Spaanderman was delisted by the West Coast Eagles.

Llane Spaanderman didn't mind being a late inclusion for his AFL debut against Essendon at Docklands in Round 6 - if anything it helped ease any nerves the 2003 draftee might otherwise have felt. Spaanderman got the nod to play his first senior game at virtually the 11th hour, when Ashley McGrath went down with a stomach complaint.
As the 198cm, 99kg ruckman-forward explained, the lateness of his call-up meant he didn't have time to get anxious. "I didn't really get that nervous. I ran out there and it was more of a shock than anything else," Spaanderman said. "The butterflies, pretty unexpectedly weren't in me. It was only a couple of hours before the game I found out so I didn't really have the time to get pumped up and worried about things. "I felt pretty relaxed about it really."
While the preparation for the Bombers clash was fairly low-key for Spaanderman, matters were a little bit more hectic for his mother Karen. With her son's debut not confirmed until late afternoon, Lions officials scrambled to get Karen to Melbourne for the game's 7.10pm start. She arrived shortly before Llane made his first foray onto the field.
ANOTHER West Coast Eagle picked up a criminal record yesterday when rookie Llane Spaanderman pleaded guilty to aggravated burglary. Spaanderman, 21, was yesterday fined $3000 and ordered to pay $370 in restitution after pleading guilty in the Perth District Court.
The ruckman admitted his role as a standover man during a violent altercation at a house party in Perth's southern suburbs in 2005. Spaanderman's two co-offenders, armed with a baseball bat, assaulted several people at the party, smashed a glass door and damaged parts of the house's interior. Prosecutors said the AFL rookie did not take part in the violence and was there more for his imposing physical stature.

Spaanderman's lawyer said his client was despondent at the time because he had been delisted by the Brisbane Lions football club and believed his career was on the scrapheap.
