I posted this on a another forum (sorry boys I'm cheating on ya's ;)) but wanna get your thoughts

Within 12 hours of last years Melbourne Cup Lloyd Williams was all over the news, the owner that we know trains his horses had just won the Melbourne Cup, with a out of form horse to boot. What was also talked about was his other horses, Zipping at the top of the straight looked the winner and for the second time in as many years faded on his run but held on for 4th thanks mainly to the lack of real stayers in the race.

Now on TVN Lloyd Williams is tipping Zipping, am I missing something? did they go out and buy a UK stayer named Zipping and not tell us? Is there something in the water at the new stables? or is he just talking up Zipping because he wants a better price on his other one?

Lloyd has said that a change of scenery for Zipping was very beneficial for the horse's career and the horse has suddenly found a new lease of life.

He's saying the horse is settling a lot better now during races and if given the right run, tucked away during the race and brought out three or four wide during the latter stages of the race he could provide a big threat to the Europeans.

I for one am not too keen on Zipping, but Lloyd knows his stuff and it might be worth having a dollar or two on the horse for a place. I'm still not convinced it has the massive turn of speed like Efficient & NDJ do for example.

It's just a waiting game now and at the conclusion of the race, it'll tell us if he is indeed pulling our legs or if he was genuinely talking sense.

Maybe Lloyd's new horse solarium will help Zipping find that extra 300m that he so clearly hasnt had in the last two Cups.

He's 7 & having his 3rd crack, even if you can forgive him for 2 failures,I cant remember a horse winning at his 3rd try.
Especially as this looks like being the strongest tempo of all 3

Apparently only 1 horse has ever won the Cup after previously missing a place twice.

i dunno, zipping drew horribly both years so maybe if he has indeed improved as the stable keeps suggesting and draws a decent barrier he could be in the finish... i can concede him a chance at a place since he's come 4th twice but to win... hmm.. think the caulfield cup was more his go personally.

Empire Rose yeah? Thats the only one i can think of off the top of my head. No idea further back though.

Oops i just read what you wrote, Empire Rose did run a place previously.

Im sure you're right about E Rose being the last to win at the 3rd try.

I dont actually know who the other one is but the stat will be right.
It was Bruce McAvaney who came up with it at BWTS this morning

My view is that Lloyd believes his best chance this year is Cest La Guerra. I only base that on the fact that he has said very little about it since he first purchased it and at that time he said that Cest La Guerra was a "marathon man" and he was aiming it at the 2008 Cup. Add to that that Cest La Guerra beat Nom Du Jeu by 4 lengths in the NZ Derby and I believe that if there is any give in the ground at all on Cup day then Cest La Guerra has to be a much better chance than 18-1. I got Cest La Guerra at 31-1. My top 3 at this stage are

Cest La Guerra
All the Good
Profound Beauty

does the rain need to come for Cest La Guerre to have a good shot... i thought his odds were good considering his lead up runs so whacked 10 each way on him at 18-1

Nick Williams said last week after the 3rd [ i think ] that they were worried about the track firming up.So if the valley was to hard for him we will need a good old fashioned Melb down pour for him
