Local Geelong Leagues Thread (GFL/BFL/GDFL)

good comment idiot, another GFL or BFL person rating there comp like its the AFL, mate comments like this are not needed many players come from the gdfl and do well in both those comps and other big names from these comps sometime struggle in the gdfl when they stroll in and think they will dominate. The GFL is a great comp no doubt about it, the bfl and gdfl i wouldnt think there would be a massive difference, anyway just post something constructive instead of sh*t like that.

"Monday's Expert" don't bother posting on here mate because nobody cares about whats going on in the GDFL. There is a GDFL thread now on bigfooty so use this and stop wasting our time with the mindless drivel and meaningless going-ons that is the GDFL.

i'm with you wildjohn! when i see new posts in this thread i think hmmm maybe some gfl or bfl news concerning top notch players it is so frustrating to log on to read about whether gdfl will play. stick to the separate thread unless it concerns good players from good leagues...

Sorry Newton but have to disagree. How about Christian Shaw originally Bannockburn mathieson medallist, Shane Jack from Weribee centrals, Nathan Lewis Bell Post Hill, Ross Dillon Bannockburn, T Mullane-Grant Bannockburn, Luke Forbes from Thomson (I know he originally played at Joeys but played at Thomson from 16-20, and goes well now for joeys). Theres a few champ, so although we all know that the GFL is twice as good as the other two local comps don't underestimate some of the individuals that play in those comps.

I was talking about GFL players coming back to play in the GDFL. I can't remember any player other than Ricky O'toole who has actually dominated the competition (GDFL competition that is).

i too heard this wildjohn. a mate of mine was working security at the festival and apparently bright sustained the injury when trying to leap from crowd surfing on to the stage to sing "nosebleed section" with the boys from the hoods. the rupture was apparently identical to the one he sustained in a practice match against newcomb last year. fortunately for michael he bumped into an off duty pharmacist who was able to fix him up with some medication for the evening that made all the pain go away. from all reports he woke up feeling very sore and sorry for himself, supertown would know more than me tho...

I am pleased to report that Michael Bright is alive and well. My sources tell me he was at leisurelink last night and clocked up 15km on the treadmill. In what will be Michaels last year of GFL footy, the boys at elderslie reserve are quite concerned that brighty's love life is going to interfere with his playing duties. It has been reported that michael is on the verge of a serious relationship but he has denied so to the Geelong Papparazzi.

On more serious issues....it has become known to me that patrick brown of the Bell Park Football Club has been named the 'most promising junior talent' for the 2007 Geelong Football League season. Patrick (aka Paddy) was in and out of the senior side last year, however reports tell me that he has been putting in an outstanding pre-season, regularly winning the pre-season runs and strength tests. Could be the one to watch this year!!! maybe the one thing the dragons need to be a real threat come september!

I agree with Wild John you cares about the GDFL - you have guys running around in the league that cannot make it in some reserve teams in the GFL and are guns playing senior football in the GDFL - stick to the GDFL thread

What the heck have you been posting since you arrived on here mate! Let me give you the heads up young fella...... GDFL DOES NOT EQUAL Meaningful Info.
Its boring, second rate and uninteresting!
There seems to be a common theme in here at the moment and that is everyone has had a gutful of GDFL footy.
Before I go to bed everynight I pray to God for drought so that there won't be enought grounds in Geelong to sustain 3 leagues and only the GFL & BFL will get a start.

By the way, to others on this thread if I am wrong and you would rather listen to "Monday Expert" and his GDFL updates and Fastuca sightings then let me know and I will no longer post.

Rumour has it that brown is tipping the scales at 80kg!! meaning he has put on about 5 stone over the pres-season. amazing stuff.

as for the under 25 game, i think last year was enough of a white wash, surely there is no need to prove the power of the gfl again?

I agree with you whispers, GFL must regain some respect back from country victoria, by taking our best to battle in the championships! When we give the GV and O&M a towling then hopefully they will see the strength of the best country footy league in vic!

I could name a few recent premiership players in the GDFL who stuggled to get a game in GFL reserves. I wont name them because they are good people who don't deserve to be rubbished and deserve their success of playing in a flag. But great footballers they aint!

i have been on this forum since 2003 and you're asking me go away!!!! i don't think so imposter. i may or may not live in the seedier part of norlane but by the sound of your so-called superior response you may have been severely tampered with by the christian brothers at that two bob milionaire establishment st.josephs....where all the primma donnas are bred.

North Shore obviously have Travis Robertson will be best player in comp have any other werribee VFL boys came with him?

Newton has Jay Bett returned will Bright be back for round one?

Grovedale has Barrow taken many to Torquay?, have heard that they have signed Torquay young guns Ben Raidme and Daine Taylor

Lara has Sleeman returning any other named recruits signed and do people think they will improve.

Thats a start boys look forward to people adding some facts.

LOCAL sporting clubs have been thrown into chaos as the drought turns playing fields concrete hard.

The Geelong and District Football League yesterday announced its season would not start until May at the earliest.

The last rounds of the season will be dropped, to allow for finals to take place as scheduled.

The district league has been told by City Hall to concentrate on playing on two grounds in urban Geelong, Shell Reserve and Bell Post Hill, which have tanks installed.

Football Geelong has already put the start of the Geelong Football League season back two weeks, cancelling all but one bye.

The BFL season is penciled in to start as per normal on April 7 to help maximise club revenue over Easter.

But Football Geelong CEO Steven O'Dowd last night said it was highly likely that season openers would be pushed back to accommodate ground renovation works. ``The council have outlined a works program, including re sowing, that may help some grounds recover. As a result, they have suggested that if possible we hold off until the start of May,'' Mr O'Dowd said.

``I think it's a fair request but it will be all down to the condition of the grounds. It's all up in the air and is contingent on a bit of weather support and whether the clubs and the league can get the grounds heavily watered during February and March.''


Geelong City Council this week moved to close another five ovals as Stage 4 water restrictions enter their second month.

Grounds at Ocean Grove, Drysdale and Hume Reserve were already closed, and many others were on the danger list.

This week the city moved to close grounds at Hamlyn Park, Herne Hill Reserve, Stead Park and Bellarine Secondary College.

GDFL President Neville Whitely said yesterday the district league was meeting with club presidents tonight to come up with proposals to put to Geelong City Council on how to manage its grounds.

Mr Whitely said the GDFL had four grounds at Winchelsea, Inverleigh, Bannockburn and Werribee that were outside the City of Greater Geelong, and talks were schedules with the respective councils.

``So we will be meeting tomorrow night and we will be looking at the grounds that are most likely to come up to scratch and we've got to delay the start of our football season,'' Mr Whitely said.

``Council has told us that whatever happens we won't be starting before the 1st of May.''

He said the league would look at Saturday and Sunday games on certain grounds.

The GDFL netball season will start at the usual time, but will start in reverse order from round 18 until the football starts, when it will revert to playing round one opponents onwards.

The Geelong Cricket Association resumes this week, with turf semi-finals spread around four grounds. The turf finals will be played next week at Lara and South Barwon grounds.

Last month a GCA match between Bell Post Hill and Grovedale at Myers Reserve was abandoned in the 15th over because the pitch was considered unsafe by both captains and the umpire. One cracked section of the pitch could be moved by hand.

Chief GCA groundsman Graeme Scannell said yesterday most local grounds were shot, but the grounds picked for the finals had couch grass wicket areas.

Mr Scannell said the situation was not good, but everyone was in the same boat and people just had to make the best of it.

Both Southern Leigh and Bellarine cricket associations are intending to play through, while reviewing the situation each week.

The City of Greater Geelong recently approved a series of grants to assist local clubs.

These included:

$25,000 requested for a water re-use scheme at new soccer pitches being established in Ocean Grove;

$25,000 for a water re-use program at the Geelong Cricket Ground, and

$10,000 requested on behalf of a group of local bowling clubs to cover the cartage costs of water to keep their natural grass greens alive.

Watering at Grovedale Recreation Reserve and Myers Reserve is being carried out using storage tanks being refilled with Class C water from the Black Rock treatment treatment plant.

Two water 45,000 litre storage tanks have also been installed at Queens Park Golf Course and the Balyang Par Three course.
