Thriller was his natural state, the rest was just makeup.

Good point though. The phrase 'The King is dead, long live the King' refers to the outgoing and then the incoming King. Back in the day, the throne was considered to never be empty to dissuade attacks. As soon as one King died, the next in line automatically became the King even if they were not yet aware of the death.

It was also considered treason to comment on the health of the King, so the saying clearly defines what King you are talking about.

In this context, people might be saying 'may his legacy live on'.
