I remember reading somewhere an interview with the manager of recruitment for hawthorn i cant remember much of it atm but i remember him saying he felt premiership contenders needed 5 a grade players (top 50 players in the comp) i think it was 10 b graders very good players and then a combination of c (being players who could hold there own but not outstanding) and D being to young to tell or making up the numbers. I am intrested to see how every1 rates our current list and also who the see developing into a and b grade players

IMO atm

Heath shaw and T Cloke Fraser, Clement(while his coming towards the end his still the best versatile defender in the comp) are A

Tarkz,swan,burnsy,Didak(should be an a if he gets form and head right) r.shaw Presti as B+

b. johnson, daisy, pendles, o brian, o bree goldsack as b grade

licca maxwell davis clarke(atm) reid rusling as c grade

d grade holland lonie davies medhurst bryan richards egan iles cox toovey stanly dawes anthony cook brown dick

i think the encouraging thing is most our d grade players bar holland medhurst lonie bryan are very young not much afl experince and large room for improvment

I think its far to say that h. shaw t.cloke and fraser will remain a graders

i think that one of o brain or goldsack has a possibility of stepping up into that a grade versatile defender and rebounder role but that is a large amount of specualtion

Didak should get everything right and put that on the park to develop into the a grader he was last year and we know he can be

i feel daisy has shown enough to suggest a grade status is on the cards for him i see him developing into a nathan brown type midfielder spark down foward type (i want to say hird but that is to big a rap)

i think pendles atm would only develop into a b plus player embly/dal santo type very versatile can play taller good hands i just feel to be able to be a grade and a player that wins you games he needs to be a bit harder at the ball but that hopefully will come with time

tarks swanny and rhyce i think will stay in that b plus role while swanny is still young at 23 dun see him improving to much

johnno i think will maintain b b plus

Maxwell is the intresting one for mine as i just can't figure out where he would fit into our line up, i heard mike sheean compare his development to that of clements but i just cant see him been giving that role with harry o playing so well as the versatile rebounding defender and goldsack also playing it very well. For that reason i am keeping maxwell as a C i dun think he is ever gonna be hopeless i just cant see him being given a role important enough for him to improve his status

Clarke has the ability to be anything i think his shown enough to be a definant b of the future wif a capabilities

Reid Rusling and Dawes are also intresting We know trav cloke has chf to himself for the next 10 years and its a matter of how we want our foward structure around him. I was really impressed with reid's ability to take contested marks at his age and I am much more excited about him then rusling. I see Reid being a B grader at least in our foward line. Unfortunatly i dont see rusling being a big time player in our long term structure. Dawes havent seen any of him cant say

As much flack as we give him i think richards can be a c grader over his whole career has struggled to string games together i think at least i hope if he can string a few together get some self belief that he can be some kind of a second option in the ruck

Have not seen enough to comment on brown or anthony as long term prosepects same goes with cook

Cox is a definant a-b prospect IMO moves well seems to have time with the ball when he gets a run in a non defensive roll i think he will be pretty impressive and hard to match up on moves so well for his height

Toovs i see as a c prospect as well good honest hard player possible b player if he develops a little like liccuria did and learns how to play midfield via tagging the top mids

Egan another one who could be anything but really testing peoples patients now with cox a similar skillful athletic type player and pendles etc is starting to fall to far behind in the list would need to really start working hard and putting the potential on the park to maintain his spot on the list long term

Iles is an intresting one seems to have good disposal and decision making when he is given time but crumbles under pressure and seems to have a good top pace but not as impressive of the mark speed could be anywhere from a b+-c grade midfielder if he improves as he settles and adjust to the pace of it at senior level if he can not adjust that he really doesn offer much

Dick has shown flare in his senior games but the problem for him is with the small fowards crumbers who rotate in midfield stints that we already have being thomas didak l davies is there room for him i doubt it three others offer a lot more versatility that said they all also have more senior footy experince

By my calculations that gives us 6 long term a graders with 3 others with a grade capablities and 6 b graders so assuming the 3 with a grade capability just develop into b grade players that gives us 9 b graders hopefully we can get something from our young hopefulls who i was unable to judge in brown anthony and dawes too

Pendles is an A.

And Davies is far better than a D. If Mick could pull his head out of his ar$e for long enough, he'd see that.

This year, I would agree with your choice of A graders. However in the coming years, when we really want to push for multiple flags, I can see us having 5 or more A graders. Pendlebury, Shaw, Cloke, Thomas, Fraser and Didak will all be A grade players by 2008-9. Then we will have a huge number of B grade players.

If you heard it from anyone from Richmond then why the hell did you even listen much less try and apply it. FWIW our A graders are Clement and Didak and that’s it. Thomas, Pendlebury, Clarke, H Shaw O’Brien and Cloke have definite prospects but they aren’t there yet. Heath is not far off. Just needs to prove he can be a mid and/or beat quality direct opponents regularly. The others are newly B’s and on the rise. We have a host of B graders and players between B & C. Burns is at the top of the Bs. I’m tempted to have him as an A. The D’s are potential As and potential delists. Time will tell. It’s all academic. Numbers are just that. Give me 1 gun ruckman, 3 gun mids a gun key forward and a gun key back and build around that with tough footballers with good skills.

Don't believe you got it right with swanny hasn't played near 100 games yet even though many drafted at same time have gone passed it. Has improved since last year got bigger and stronger - has to contend with taggers now tarks runs around free - i think he will develop his a leader on the field and brings others into the game - rate him as high as heath shaw he is much better than rhyce and you have him in same category - you must have a short memory about rhyce - swan has got better each year so i think there is more to come - obivously other club coaches rate him otherwise there wouldnt be a tag on him. Also Iles wont last cracks under pressure - too much like Julian rowe.

"you heard it from anyone from Richmond then why the hell did you even listen much less try and apply it" It was from hawthorn who i think have set the bar as far as bottoming out and rebuilding is concerned which i am glad we have not had to do but their recruitment over the last few years has been great and unlike richmond and carlton have not wasted many draft picks

Collingwood in season 07;

A Graders (5 needed);
Shaw, Didak, Cloke, Lockyer, Swan

B Graders (10 needed);
Thomas, Rocca, Shaw, O'Bree, O'Brien, Johnson, Prestigiacomo, Pendlebury, Fraser

C Graders (Promising youngsters, questionable seniors);
Dick, Lonie, Goldsack, Holland, Rusling ect.

D Graders (Unproven youngsters);
Cook, Wellingham, Dawes ect.

What we want in due course;

A Graders (5 needed);
Shaw, Didak, Cloke, Thomas, Swan, Pendlebury, O'Brien

B Graders (10 needed);
Shaw, Cook, Dick, Johnson, Anthony, Goldsack, Fraser, Stanley, Egan, Toovey, Cox ect.

I think the strange thing about his season is that we haven't had very many "A-graders" at all...
Didak, who was an easy A-grader last year has clearly been a shadow of himself this season.
Clement who's another lock has missed most of the season.
Lockyer is having a great season, but he's simply not an A-grader
Dane Swan would probably be in the same boat, and had a better season last year anyway.
Heath Shaw is an A-grader before his knock, B-grader after.
Travis has been an A-grader for the last couple of months, but not the whole season.

So basically, I would hesitate to put anyone in the full A-grader category this season. And this is the main reason I just can't see us winning a flag this season unless Clement returns 100% and Didak and Shaw pick up their post-injury form.

However, we probably have easily the most B-graders in the league (only Geelong would be close)...and next year if all goes well we can have the following as A-graders:
Didak, Cloke, Shaw, Pendles, Clement.

As long as those blokes are healthy, and the young guys keep improving, we'll be a strong contender.
