Your thoughts.

I have becomed exposed to her, because my wonderful, about to be 10 year old daughter likes her. My 10 year daughter is (of course, being her father) absolutely special. Given my clear bias I won't elaborate, but she's without ego, she's as bright as they come and she's got a kind soul... and she really likes this Lorde album.

As a result, I've been exposed to it. At first I paid it little attention, but some of the beats and some of the lines are interesting, so I listened more.

I've found myself liking her album quite a lot. For me there's a lot of Fleetwood Mac about it, I think the girl is very gifted.

Thoughts?

I rate her as a musician has a wonderful voice and the songs are fantastic. An interesting person as well, she seems to be outspoken and very mature for her age. Does come across as a little arrogant but she seems to be against mainstream music (ironic I know).

Don't think we can pot her for perceived arrogance... that's self belief, get rid of the arrogance you wouldn't have the same person.

Has a great voice, if it wasn't for commercial radio overplaying royals then people might like her more. Her other songs a way better IMO espically team.

Yeah for me Team is the best song on the album. A wonderful piece, especially for a 17 yo.

Do not want.

Lorde reminds me of those rock tshirts of bands like Ramones, Nirvana, Motörhead etc that are sold at Jays Jays or Target, and come pre-faded and aged as though you bought it 20 years ago. Usually purchased by 15 year old girls who listen to OneErection, to wear on days they're going for the alternativerockbabe2014 look.

I've only heard that one song, but it's insincere as ****. If you're going to diss the mainstream, try not doing it when you're signed to a multimillion dollar record contract to a multinational record company who snapped you up when you were still shitting your diapers and moulded you into a product - packaged and ready to be sold.

At least Miley Cyrus is sincere. She's a whore and will suck dick if it means selling more records - just like everyone else - but she ain't hiding shit. She'll get that tongue out, and shove her arseh*le in your face ... It's what the people who listen to that shit want - they crave it. She's the only honest one in the industry.

Oh no, there's going to be teenagers in 2034 wearing Lorde shirts hanging around train stations?

As a big Nirvana fan I have a game I like to play: Ask them to name a Nirvana album other than Nevermind. One I asked was actually wearing a shirt with In Utero's cover art emblazoned across it and was stumped.

She's the new Margaret Urlich.

Actually Marge is better looking than Lorde and Safety in Numbers is a better album than Heroine or whatever the f*** it's called.

Poor old Marge had competition from Gen X GOAT artists while Lorde only had to beat Gen Y shitheads like Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus.

This would have to be the most idiotic post I've ever read on music.

Is this what you said: Lorde- 17 years old and creating her own music (which is pretty good) should forget being herself and start being a whore like other artists to sell records because that's being honest?

I can't get past the bit where he says he has only heard one song.

I'm fairly sure his criticism wasn't of her individuality but of the hypocrisy in complaining about the mainstream when signed to a multi-million dollar record deal, just like every other big artist. It's doing everything the same as other artists apart from the genre of music, and then criticising the 'mainstream' she belongs to. The Miley Cyrus comparison was pretty ridiculous I will say.
Good on her for achieving this at 17 (not that that has any bearing on the quality of her music), but in my experience so much of what she says is just so whiny and sanctimonious.

Even worse is people who wear pink Ramones t-shirts. Saw Matt Rogers (former Wallaby and Kangaroos winger) wearing one. If you wear one of these you clearly have no idea about the Ramones.

tip: don't wear a rock band tee (if at all) from a band you know nothing about

Lorde reminds me of Alanis Morisette. Catchy songs that hit the spot in that moment but her annoying voice will catch her out and she will soon be a has been like Alanis.

If she has an album as successful as Jagged Little Pill then that's a job well done.

My point is that the brand Lorde is just another manufactured pop star who is marketed in a slightly different way to the others. She writes music with professional songwriters/studio musicians, producers, executives and marketing types, supplied by the record company, to make sure the brand has a highly commercial product to sell.

I have no problem with that at all. I'm not even criticising her music or her talent. But what I find insincere and hypocritical about it, is that she criticises exactly what she is. I read an interview with her where she says she has "no commercial expectations". That's a joke. Maybe she was speaking as "Ella" there, but she's not Ella when she's doing interviews/marketing, she's Lorde. And Lorde is a mainstream, commercial product, with a marketing team behind her who have spent big bucks promoting her to a target audience through various mainstream, commercial channels for profit. There are high commercial expectations from Lorde, they wouldn't have made the investment otherwise.

Anyway, my original post was half tongue in cheek, I don't really take this stuff all that seriously. My Miley Cyrus comments are obviously (well I thought) not to be taken seriously. I come from the school of thought that if you like it, listen to it. I personally find it hard not to cringe a bit at Lorde for said reasons. It's a small critique, though a valid one. Musically speaking, I just don't like that song. I find that a great song can be stripped back to the vocal melody and a subtle rhythm accompaniment, and still sound great. I reckon that if you took away all the bells and whistles of the slick production in 'Royals', it would be a pretty boring and dynamically flat song. I just don't like it. It's all subjective. Maybe I'll listen to some of her other stuff and get back to ya's.:thumbsu:
