You right on one thing Blessed, we went one-on-one against Hawthorn in last years PF and it turned the game.

That's why they struggle with Geelong. Hawthorn struggle against good contested footy teams. Just a little to flaky.

To beat Clarko's Cluster, we employed a simple but ingenious trick. The Cluster, where guys spread across the field in a box, relies on the opposition to be spread throughout the cluster as well, so that the team who Cluster can always get two or three guys to a contest when they try to get through.

What you need to do is clump a bunch of four or five guys together, who then work their way around the two or three hawks (handball, shepherd, run) and move it forward that way. Generally down the wing.

Seems the way to break a zone is to hit it hard in one spot and just outnumber the guys there.

We have clearly rolled the Dice and are playing a dangerous game where our players will not be ready by Round 1.

Yes, Geelong are playing the same game.

On the expectation that we will be fresher come finals time.

But if we lose early games due to this tactic, it will put pressure on us to win games mid season.

I expect us to be beaten by Hawthorn. Just because they are up and running at the mo and we are not.

But it is the Richmond and Carlton games that will really tell.

if we lose one of those and are 1-2, it will be put heaps of pressure on Nathan Buckley and a new coaching staff.

The big key, is making sure you don't have to travel for an interstate final.

West Coast and Freo are 10 goal better sides over there.

So, we need to plot a course which means we play all our finals at the MCG.

Either way; it is a dangerous tactic we have embarked on - in the tenure of a new coach who is not a media favourite and is the perfect target for all and sundry to get stuck into.

I just hope the Brains Trust at Collingwood have got it right.

Really tough to maintain such a high intensity for long periods. Sides used to do it for a quarter or a half, then for a few weeks at a time.

St Kilda kept it up for 2 years ('09-'10) which for me was amazing. I'd never seen a side so fanatical around the ball for so long. Start of '11 and they were flat as tacks.

If we were that hard at it during the pre season i'd be more worried about running out of gas later in the year which i feel we did last year.

We all like to see our side win every game and it's hard to watch your side get smacked like we did the other night but there is no need to panic yet. Richmond just belted Geelong, you think the cats are panicking?

Starts to the season are important. 1n 1991, we had probably our best side but post the premiership we had such a large hangover; we were shocking. We stormed home, were the best side in the AFL but missed the finals and were never able to do ourselves justice by defending our flag.

Post that Darren died. It hit our Club more than we know.

1992, through the stupid old finals system, we finished equal top (3rd on percentage) and played the 6th team St Kilda, lost by 5 points when Stewie Loewe took 43 marks in the game and it was bye, bye Pies again.

We didn't embrace the moment...

So instead of 3peating in 1990, 1991, and 1992 we are left with a huge chance at a dynasty and just one flag.

My point is simple....

You have to be equipped for the moment......

Because you may never get that moment again.

You do need to be equipped for the moment. But is the NAB cup the moment? Round 1 isn't either. If we are jumping at shadows thinking we may have to go to Perth to play a final and compromise our season in fear of that well we are stuffed already.

Mate you may have won the premiership the previous year but you failed to get within daylight of the top three teams that year. Drawing a long bow if you think that collingwood were the best side that year. That would be like Hawthorn claiming they were the best side in 1990 on the back of wining a game late in the season at waverley against your mob by 11 or 12 goals

Did you not watch Collingwood in 2011?

We were flying out of the box, won the nab cup but then stumbled in the second half of the season and limped to the line.

Happy that Collingwood appear to be taking a long term view, you dont need to go through a season with 20 wins.....you just need to be cherry ripe for September.

And Collingwood actually seem to play well in interstate finals anyway....so no reason to be put off by that.

I actually think we played pretty well in the 2011 GF, but at the end of the day the fresher side over ran us after 2 realtively easy finals compared to our epic Prelim and hard fought Qualifier.

Decisions to play Jolly, Didak & Reid in particular also really hurt us. I always thought it was a mistake not to play Wood, but I've since been informed that he was also injured so playing Jolly makes perfect sense. I'll never agree with the decision to play Reid, and Dids should have been the sub.

Collingwood's form in our last 7 games was way off our early and mid season form. Battled to wins against StK, BL, WC, Hawthorn....earlier in the year we smashed those teams by 10 goals.

Then the GF, it was a massive effort from the lads...but the problem was we had too many players who were underdone - H.Shaw, Thomas, Dawes - or guys who were carrying injuries - Didak, Reid, Jolly, Maxwell.

In 2011 if the GF was played in June or July we would have won.

So am happy for the planning to be about peaking for Septmeber.

Buckley explained all this in his interview on SEN. It's impossible to maintain a forward press for 30 weeks with the introduction of the sub rule.

He basically said there are two ways to deny your opponent space 1. Push forward on them when they have the ball in their defensive half 2. Fall back and deny that space in their attacking half. In order to do the first you either have to have a team of Shane Crawford's and Robert Harvey's or be able to provide the players you do have regular rest periods of at least 2 minutes. The sub rule has simply denied players enough rest to be able to play that style for a full season. If you watch any match that involves teams playing a full on press this pre-season you'll find that the last quarter denigrates into a floodfest the bulldogs v blues and dockers v tigers games are prime examples.

The season lasts 30 weeks and I'm willing to bet my account on the fact that if we are injury free and match hardened we won't see the press introduced until about the 20th week. Because otherwise it'll take too much of a toll on the players as it did in 2011. So I ask you this, would you rather see the press in the second week of March or the second week of September?...
