Legendary musician Lou Reed has died, Rolling Stone reported on Sunday.
He was 71.
Reed is best known for his work as guitarist, singer and songwriter for the Velvet Underground, and his solo career. Reed had a profound impact on American culture, introducing avant garde rock and pop art to mainstream music. His work with Andy Warhol is noted as one of the most important collaborations in contemporary culture.
RIP you cranky old bastard :(

The Velvet Underground pretty much got me into alternative music and the TV&N is one of my favourite albums of all time.

Linger on Lou.

Interested to know if anyone has sat through Metal Music Machine from start to finish?

Oh yes !!

The first time, even though i had heard the reviews and was expecting the worst - I was still wtf !!

Every other time since i have been pretty well smashed.

If he wasn't so rich and could pay for treatment, he would've been dead from heroin abuse a long time ago.

I don't know that he was very rich. I don't think any VU albums were ever commercially successful, nor was his solo stuff.

Very sad news. TVU are one of my favorite bands and most of his solo stuff is very good too. I'll miss his trolling of journalists.

Terrible news. Not only a great musician but a genuinely funny character too.
RIP Lou.

Velvet Underground and Reed's solo work were before my time but I'll never forget the day I was first introduced to The Velvet Underground. The song was 'Here She Comes Now' and it was like nothing I'd heard before and it shaped me as a musician.

This it the best if you can track it down. Double album "Take No Prisoners, live In New York" Outstanding in every way, playlist, sound/quality of recording etc. Its a must.

"Trivia-Springsteen is in the audience and Reed mentions him in the Walk on the Wildside track"

One of musics pioneers. TV&N is such a great album. If I were to rank my favourite albums ever it would be somewhere around 10-20 I'd imagine, but I think it's close to the most influential album for me in terms of the way I listened to music. Something clicked in me when I listened to it. It was so simple, yet so different. It really kick started me into real music exploration around 10 years ago, when through my teenage years I was happy to just listen to what was thrown at me (like most teenagers).
