Robbie McGhie believes he played 57 not 49 with Bulldogs.
Lucas lives in Spotswood but barracks for Geelong!
Are we still a chance to pick him up father son?

Nope the AFL historian is still pretty firm on the fact that it was only 49 and he is going to go through the records. It would be interesting to see who he picked if he was available to us as he is a Geelong supporter.Dont worry we already have 2 father/sons this year.

Is there a limit on father-son drafts?

If you have two can you have nomore?

I thought you could keep going, If the kid is a gun we should try and get him especially if as the third father son draft we have to give up pick 98 to get him.

The problem is Robbie Mcghie played 77 games for Richmond and they are still burning from the fact they stuffed up with Jason Cloke. Apparently they wanted him 3rd rnd father-son and the pies went 2nd round father-son.

If he does come under father-son for the bulldogs and we select the same father-son round (2nd or 3rd). I think it's Lucas' choice to go with either us or the tiges.

Confusing isn't it!

I think remember someone saying the younger son Lachlan is a bulldog supporter.

If the 49 games stat is right (still a glimmer of hope that it's not), Lucas is as good as gone. :(

Clayton seems to be a bigger fan of the younger son, Lachlan. How about we draft Robbie McGhie with a pre season pick, play him in one game, and then get Lachlan for a third round pick in next year's draft? (yes, I'm kidding ... unless Lachlan's likely to be a #1 choice and a future superstar of the game).

I think i remember McGhies first game , against North , plyed on Peter Steward and kicked 5 or 6 points. anyone recall ?/

I can only remember him from the season he came back-1979.

Was he 19th or 20th man in a few games? Do they count in your overall tally? Unleashed the club history lists him with 49 games and 5 night series games, dont know how authorititive it is.

Westy Boy. You have a brilliant tactical mind but you're not pragmatic enough. Why not put Robbie on the supp list now, promote him, play him this season-hell it might even bolster our defence-and then claim Lucas with a father/son in November.

My "Encyclopedia of League Footballers" says that McGhie only played 37 games for us. Does anyone know how many games this man has really played?

There is no real limit if you have delisted sufficient players.

Have seen him play a couple of times and he is a good player but not great. A third round pick would be about right.
He could of course knock back Richmond and the Doggies and do what Tim Clarke did a couple of seasons ago and just nominate.

This is not as silly as it sounds.
Barry Lawrence sat on the bench in the QAFL at the age of 57 as he had played 49 games for Fitzroy.
This allowed Brisbane to pick up his son Steven Lawrence who has since gone to St Kilda.

Gee, I would hate to think we missed out on picking up a quality key position player by one game!

I hope the doggies explore all avenues to get at least one of the McGhie's.

Then again if Robbie reckons he has played 57 games maybe we should send him down to the AFL to discuss it with whoever is in charge of counting games played.

He has a very persuasive way about him does Bones.

Rocco, your book was probably printed before 1979 as he played another 12 games after coming back from Richmond.

Club Historian Arthur has confirmed a figure of 49, but McGhie is still adamant it is 57! Stating that Club figures are often wrong an example beinghe believes his brother Joe played 30 games and not 11 as listed by the club. (Maybe Robbie wants to play with us?)

The club lists Robbies games as:(night games not included in father-son rule)
1969 1 day game
1970 16 day 3 night
1971 6 day 2 night
1972 14 day
1979 12 day

Someone must be wrong!
Have we got any guys from the late 60s and early 70s here?

Barry Lawrence was a St Kilda legend and was named in our team of the century last year.

He played well over 50 games for the Saints. The way the father/son rule worked, all he had to do was sit on the bench for one QAFL game which he did while he was in his late 40's and that qualified Steve to join either St Kilda or Brisbane.

At the time Steve preferred to stay in Queensland but fortunately for us he realised his heart was St Kilda and wanted to play at the club where his Dad was a champion at and at a place (Moorabbin) where he spent a lot of his childhood.

It seems a shame that the father/son rule can be exploited in this way, especially considering the Bulldogs will miss out on a player because his Dad played only one game short of the 50 required. Even worse when you consider how much of a local identity Robbie McGhie is in local football with Spotswood.

Robbie McGhie has a bad reputation with the club and I was wondering if its all just a smoke screen. Lucas is playing well but his club is on the bottom of the ladder. Think we should reserve our judgement until or if he plays for Vic metro.

And with West Footscray and with St. Albans, I also remember Warren and Steve his brothers playing with Yarraville in the VFA.

I am pleased you got Lawrence in the end Sainter. These things are important at a footy club.

Does the supp list still exist? ... if it does, sensational idea! :D

Get Robbie to knock some heads while he's out there too ... up for 13 charges of striking and looking at 47 weeks courtesy of the tribunal? Fine by us. ;)
