Scandal Luke Slayers

Fantastic Simpsons reference.
I wonder who was the authorised referee to sign-off on the Stat Dec. They might be regretting their signature being on this document. The court should check their bank account 2 weeks either side of it being issued.

Legally a lot will depend on what the AFL figures actually did and said about the stat dec. Just having it sent to them doesn’t really mean much legally. It doesn’t show they’ve done anything to induce or coerce Sayers into making a false statement.

If it’s shown that they are coaching him or knowingly assisting him to make a false statement then that’s a different story.

I actually doubt that would be the case. I mean, of course they may well have done it, but in terms of them being caught doing it on the record. Surely they couldn’t be that dumb. I would think one of the very reasons for making him submit a stat dec was to ensure if it turns to shit like it has, it all falls back on him and not the AFL.

There’s not really anything wrong with receiving the contents of the stat dec ahead of time. A bit like me needing one for a sick day at work, and sending the contents to the HR person beforehand as in “is this what you need”? Doesn’t mean I’m lying on it.

Of course, it makes the AFL “investigation” look incredibly dodgy, but that’s not a legal issue. Everybody knows ripe dodgy they are.

“Hey mate, before you commence your investigation into me, do you mind checking that the evidence to prove my innocence is sufficient?”

“Yeah sure, give me a second to look over it to make sure it will be enough to prove you are innocent of whatever it is I am going to investigate you for. Yep, no problems here. Looks good enough to me.”

👍

Allegedly, of course.
Don't forget the potential for 'corrections' to be made.

Well if the reply you get is anything more than a one word answer, yes or no, you are effectively being coached in what to say by your HR department. So similarly, unless the draft stat dec got a one word reply from the AFL, they are colluding with Sayers

The optics are rotten when you are liaising with your “independent” investigator ahead of your final statement.
Don’t worry about optics - it’s not an Independent investigation

In years gone by, there would be 3-4 resignations handed it an AFL House already. The longer it goes without Sayers (and now more than likely the AFL chipping in) calling a halt the risk of more getting the arse increases including the CEO and possibly even the Chair. They’ve backed the wrong horse and the cover up is always worse than the crime.
The question is why they (the AFL) felt the need to get involved in the first place. Was it really a matter they needed to "investigate".

Trade-off

You resign and distance yourself from the AFL publicly

We’ll “investigate” and find you did nothing wrong

Go quietly, the right way, and we’ll do what we can to salvage what is left of your reputation.

And we need a Patsy... how about the missus? She's expendable

Nah its just a witness to say "Lukey boy signed this, todger in hand, on such-and-such a day". The witness is not implicated in the liars lies...if they lied.

The head of the AFL integrity unit received a draft of Luke Sayers’ statutory declaration from his camp almost a week before a sworn version was submitted to the league as part of its “dick pic” investigation.
The bombshell revelation has cast serious new doubt over the legitimacy of the AFL probe that cleared Mr Sayers of wrong-doing in January last year.

It comes as his estranged wife Cate alleges the AFL colluded with the then Carlton president to help clear him of the scandal.

Just try to even imagine some of the dodgy shit the AFL has made go away over the years.
I worked at the NFL for 3 years. At that time we had 2000+ lawyers on retainer.

We had AFL Ops folks visit us at least twice during that period including sitting in on our Monday morning "Ops" meetings.

Mike Florio's name come up often as a PIA?

Nah. He was outside the bubble (external media). The NFL restricted access to facilities, players, and staff heavily to avoid the likes of him.

We had enough of our own internal Sayers-like issues with our own staff. I worked with Ike Taylor (who I thought was a decent dude) when he joined the NFL Network who decided it was a good idea to Facetime production staff from the shower. Before that Warren Sapp (one of the worst individuals I've ever met) got fired after trying to pick up a hooker at SB49 who was actually an undercover cop.

These were just the issues that went public. There were dozens that never saw the light of day as they were promptly buried.

Our staff hotel in SF at SB50 was a cesspool. The ground floor lobby bar was wall-to-wall hookers, which displeased my missus greatly :D . We had Mark Davis (Raiders owner) on our floor (he is notoriously cheap and takes the comp room instead of paying for a suite) and every time you walked down the hall it sounded like he was interfering with farm animals.
