Lumumba in trouble?

The main problems selection wise over the next month or so are going to be within our backline, and in particular our half backs. With Fasolo, Williams, Young, Langdon, Seedsman and Lumumba all playing in a reasonably similar position the time is going to come where some big calls are needed. Of those six I think we can only take in three, four MAX, and I think Fasolo and Williams are definite's so then only one or two of Young, Langdon, Seedsman and Lumumba and unfortunately I'm not so sure that 'H' has a spot with a fully fit backline the way things are going.
Thoughts?

I've been thinking about this. Lumumba is a depth player this year. I don't know if it's a Sampson thing, but although many on here think he's been great this year, and his endeavour has always been fantastic, I just reckon he isn't as damaging as he was previous years setting up plays from defence.

Anyways, he hasn't done much wrong, but yeah, he may be in trouble but I think the selectors, from where we are at, respects experience, and whilst Lumumba has carried on like a dick of field, at times, he's generally a well liked good guy, so I think for these reasons he will get the nod over say a Taylor Adams and co.

I think Harry's playing quite well and the team is thriving, so why are we talking about Oxley and Scharenberg who is yet to play a game in black and white at any level? Or Fasolo who has a couple of games worth of experience as a defender?

Because too many imagine Scharenberg and all our other first round draft picks as Pavlich, Dangerfield and Judd when the reality is, even the very best players take games to become impact players. It's ridiculous. Harry has been excellent while in the midfield this year, and his form has dropped a bit since going to defence, but he is a crucial wingman for us.

However, in saying that, depending on how much experience we lose from our best 25 at the end of the year, and depending on the development of our younger players, I would be interested to see what he would get on the trade table.

Interesting but I doubt we'd get much for him now. Next to nothing is my guess.

H is core 18, losing his speed and attack would stifle us and cause more play to get locked in our defense. Pretty crucial link in our side and very durable player.

H offers something we lack and that is pace.

On a sidenote, the op mentions him being dropped as a defender. He is more a wingman now than defender but we were desperate in defence against carlton so he went back.

Similar to sack. He will go forward once again we get players back.

Harry's not a defender anymore. He played there on Friday because we had no defenders left. Gold sack played there too dude.

I guarantee you right now Harry won't be playing back against Adelaide.

Yes, I like Harry's one on one ability to defend, his dash off the half back and ability to evade opposition tacklers in the defensive 50. Remember he was an AA in 2009 or 10. However, his kicking is what lets him down. We just can't have this type of liability in the team. This is the same reason Adams and Kennedy should be playing VFL. We need good kicks in the team. Until they can hit a target they will always be at risk of losing their position in the team. Fortunately bad kicking can be turned around - see Toovey.

Stop living in the past. He has learnt very little since 2009. The only time he gets a dash of half back or anywhere is when someone gives him the ball. If he marks a ball he usually stops. He is not a good kick, he has good straight run and is bulky. When he gets dropped, he's gone...just like Maxwell.

H should be playing wing. I think he's only backline at the moment because of the inexperience and injuries to our preferred back 6. I think Harry is just about our best option on a wing actually... for me, if he's not back 6 then he's a lock for wing. His line breaking, reading of the play and ball getting abilities are too important for us to do without.

This is obvious. That people seem not to realise this is mind-blowing.

H has played wing/midfield for most of the year. Friday night in particular he spent more time dropping back into the backline because of the absences of Maxwell/Toovey/Young.

Best runner in our time by a mile, the only reason he has the opportunity to **** up occasionally is because he is EVERYWHERE. I wish we had more guys who could be a bit of a pressure valve like O'Brien when we are stagnant or trying to work the ball out of a tight spot.

Would be one of the first picked, he has turned himself around after looking in big trouble as a backman in 2012.

Problem is that, even with a hypothetical game where the Hawks have 22 and if the Pies have 25 the Hawks still would win.

Maxwell has been playing some really good football and is also providing invaluable experience and education to our new young backs in Langdon and Frost and even Keeffe and now Marley. You don't pension off two hundred games of experience including captaining a premiership side if he's playing good footy! The only thing that could possibly derail Maxy at the moment is injuries.

Gets caught too often.
Turns it over by foot too often with up and under kicks and wayward shots from 50m.
His good games are very good but his average is hurt by the above.

Fasolo/Seedsman might keep him off a wing and along with Langdon might keep out of the backline. fasolo and Seedsman have to get fit and find/maintain form before that's an issue though. I think with injuries we have a spot for Harry. I wouldn't be offerring him a big contract going forward though.

I think Lumumba is an important part of transitioning this team to the new generation. Short term I don't see a great problem. I think what Bucks loves about him is his work rate and ability to get back from a wing help out the defense and rebound effectively - mainly with run & carry.

No doubt he has some flaws in his game. His dispsosal by foot is the major worry - hitting simple lead up targets is not a strong point, a total lack of finesse. I think this is why in the medium to long term he may lose his place to better ball users like Seedsman, but only when they can match his work rate and that won't be this year. However, its hard to tell when the sword can fall - one injury & suddenly someone seizes an oppurtunity and you find yourself surplus to needs.

I disagree with your first sentence, but the rest is right. He contributes to the manic pressure more than most as his ability to get from one contest to another repeatedly is elite as his ability to consistently pressure the ball carrier both of which are extremely important. His attack on the footy is sometimes clumsy but not uncommitted.

Also it is important to remember in some circumstances he will have been instructed not to commit to a ground ball struggle as we need him on the outside as a running option or to round up their running options. Often this can look like he is not attcking the footy or trying to win a contest or not helping out - he will seagull around a scrimmage which can frustrate people - however that is likely to be his role and following instructions. When a one on one ball is to be won though I can't remember Lumumba ever shirking the issue.

In no trouble at the moment, he has only played in defence last couple of games because of injury, when he has played on the wing he has been in the best just about every week. His line breaking is great. I think he just needs to improve his decision making, instead of bombing it long and high to contest try and hit someone up in the 50.
