FREMANTLE coach Ross Lyon has challenged his middle-tier players to take more responsibility for the club's on-field fortunes this season and release the burden on stars like Matthew Pavlich.

Star ruckman Aaron Sandilands, key midfielder David Mundy and captain Pavlich - Fremantle's last three club champions - have been well supported at different stages of the past two years by defender Luke McPharlin and young midfielders Michael Barlow and Nat Fyfe.

However, Lyon said it was time for middle-tier players such as Paul Duffield, Michael Johnson and Garrick Ibbotson to lift their performances and take ownership of the team's fortunes.

Yep.

The lack of development from our mid-tier group of players, especially when they had the chance to step up in an injury ravaged season, was one of the main factors in Harveys demise imo.

They were given no direction, were unable to settle in a position, (because of our ridiculous selection/positioning policies), and subsequently went backwards as a result.

What a refreshing and positive thing to see for our club.:thumbsu:

The club has certainly been making all the right noises over the off-season.

As always however, the truth lies in the proverbial pudding. I'll wait to pass judgement until we see it in practice.

Bring on the season proper!

Look, I think if anyone's going to make the mid-tier step up, he's the man, but it's not as if we haven't heard such challenges before. Many times. Isn't this the perpetual refrain at Freo?

So it's a club culture issue?

Yes, it was.

At least we have someone with a proven track record of doing it this time.

So maybe it won't be in the future.

Pretty much.

Getting more out of mid-level players would probably be one of the key reasons we chased Lyon. He has a great record in that regard. His gameplan provides clarity and allows players to perform roles well and within their limits.

While Saints had some out and out great players, our depth runs a bit deeper at the top, albeit not yet reaching their zenith, still developing their games and bodies.

The Saints poster boy for a C grade player who stepped up to be a good B grader is now on our list. We have B graders who could be A grade. But consistent B grade performances would also be an improvement.

Could it be that the reason some these mid-tier players who need to step up are just not very talented. Perhaps they have scored a meal ticket because their employers have been unable to see mediocrity.

Duffield I think is good enough but was shit last year for whatever reason.

Ibbotson promised much but has failed to deliver. At this stage he should be far better and far more consistent. Injuries are just an excuse has 79 games of experience.

MJ has deteriorated after great promise early - that's all mental

Crowley has never been good enough and never will be

Or not coached appropriately?

Johnson is either a very late maturer or he's not able or capable enough to be a consistent KPP........a defining year for him.

Glad to see someone else with a decent memory in Anchorite, this is about the 6th 'challenge' to our mid tier. Hopefully this one sticks into the players head and we see the swimmers swim with the sinkers (which hopefully there are minimal) are out the door. At least now I get a distinct feeling the sinkers won't be tolerated any longer.

If we are all absolutely honest, I'm sure most of our supporters would admit that we've never had a quality list of players. Maybe a few strengths in certain areas, but that's about it.

Well, these phrases are used all the time. What else else can a coach say? And obviouly opposing teams will have a word, too...

I suppose that was my point. Nothing to get excited about. It's about what a coach can do, and so far such challenges have been more like empty threats that a bunch of lazy teenagers have seen right through.

I'll get excited when the likes of Duffield, Ibbotson and Johnson look like superstars due to having crystal clear roles, based on their strengths, in a well-structured and supported defence, and are motivated to work their arses off to keep their spots there. Nothing more frustrating that watching other teams' well-drilled spuds outplay our talented flakes.

That's the nuts and bolts of it isn't it. The coach has to do more than make the statement that they need to step up. The phrase is well worn in every club.

I am hoping in the treatment Walters got we are seeing a statement from the coach that is a little more than rhetoric though. I also like the way Anthony seems to be being handled. He is being encouraged, supported and he has been told that there is a door to the best 22 there that he needs to open through form and application. I am encouraged by what I see happening with Crowley, MJ, Duffield, Ballantyne etc. They seem to be clear that the expectation is for them to be significantly better. I loved hearing the statement that Hill and Fyfe still have long way to go until they are Pendlebury and co. Step up fellas.

We are really wanting some pressure put on those players to perform at a higher standard or there is not an opportunity in the team.

Agreed! He certainly had the door shut on him by Harvey. Lyon coming in is going to be great for him. He will be given the opportunity to prove he is worth the 300K+ we have been paying him.....

Or he will again prove that we are terrible at recruiting player's from other club's and should stop doing it.

Yep spot on. We all massively over-rate our own players. As much as we don't like it its probably good to get an outsiders perspective on how other clubs see our players as these analogies are probably more accurate.

It's probably harsh and it'll never happen but i want to see a respected footy journo go through our list one by one and say it how it is. Whether they're up to it or not. I spose thinking about it, that will never happen because it's not really serving much of a purpose more of a reality check

Fans over rating the list is one thing. I bet Lyon, Sumich and Stone don't. They bring a professional outsiders view with no attachments.

Just what Harvey should have brought, but then we had the failure to cull in 2008. Harvey must have over-interpreted our 2006. I wonder how Lyon views our 2010.

David Parkin on AFL teams said with the quality of our list & the discipline Lyon will bring we will be big improvers & very hard to beat this year.

Harvey had been with us for 2 seasons. Maybe it shows how quickly you lose the capacity to independently assess a player. We re-signed Murphy on a 2 year deal, and he wanted J Carr to re-sign for 2 years too. But you can find decisions like that on most coaches records.

Lyon issues challenge and backs it up with opportunity.

Only players who exceeded 80% game time in the Richmond game were:

De Boer
Suban
Mayne
Bradley
Dawson
Duffield
Crowley
Johnson
McPhee
Mellington
Mzungu
Pearce

If thats not middle tier I dont know what is.
