Trepidation? Nah, that's not it. Disquietude? Perhaps. Anticipation? Abso****inglutely.
He had heard the murmurings from afar, the hushed tones of the common folk as they went about their menial lives. Support for the monarchy was faltering, they whispered. The eminence surrounding this great club had dissipated, they murmured. The sovereignty of the Gold City Royals wasn't under threat, it was all but deceased.
The warrior wasn't one to take the word of others as gospel - he hadn't risen to his lofty standing by being unprepared, by believing the scuttlebutt pedalled by the weak and the uninformed. He was to make his own assessment.
The plebeians, as is the norm, were misguided. Beneath a quiet content lay a pair of determined figureheads, ably supported by a robust core of unwavering, intellectually superior advisors. The figureheads had scoured the greater landscape, and had hand picked the noblest and brightest untried prospects to groom in their image. But yet, despite this, there was a piece, an albeit minor piece, missing.
The monarchy were in search of a soldier, and in turn a soldier was in search of a monarchy.
The warrior had been chosen, it was time to put down his arms - his destiny had finally been bestowed upon him.
The mightiest of all warriors was now royalty...
