According to C7 news this morning, McLeod's contract negotiations have hit a snag as the Crows are baulking at his asking price of 600k a season.

Does anyone know more on this?

Is McLeod worth 600k a season? And can we afford this anyway?

:(

Apparantly AFC are offering $550K per season. Both parties have said that an agreement will be reached, & probably sooner rather than later. I'm not worried (yet).

That's more than enough

If he wants more than that he would be good trade value.

I'm not worried.

It would be very difficult for a team to get McLeod. The Crows would only give him away if he absolutely definately wanted to leave at all costs, which seems highly unlikely.

And even if he did the trade value would be huge. Another team would have to be willing to give up a hell of a lot. If this happened the Crows could really set themselves up with getting some of the best available young talent in the deal.

As I said, I'm not worried. The Crows can't really lose as long as they play hardball.

I reckon MCLeod will be signed to AFC for a long-term deal before the Roos game.

Any way, he can't leave, otherwise "Macca" will haev to get himself a new username! ;)

Unless he's named after Kenny McGregor......

NO

IMHO, no player is worth more than $500K so if anyone from our list wants more than they should shut the door on their way out.

I personally don't believe that AFC are willing to offer anyone over $500K because i remember listening to John Reid once saying that no player in the comp was worth more than $500K and that was during the preseason this year.

no way stiffy! Mr McLeod is worth every penny. He won't be going anywhere. If I have to I will wash his car everyweek, clean his house, mow his lawn, babysit his kids...........virtually anything to keep the good man happy here at the Crows.

If we are bruatlly honest and remove our feelings he is not worth $600K. No player is. The club is bigger than individual so if McLeod wants to hold the club to ransom then he should shut the door on his way out.

And no one can tell me that he would be earning his $600K this season.;)

I would be shattered if he left us for another club. I don't think money is Andrews big thing. He just isn't that type of guy. The club and his management will come to an agreement very shortly then we can end these silly threads that only give me nightmares :(

Have no fear, Macca is going nowhere. He will be a Crow for life, but won't be earning $600K next year. That is just his manager talking! Will be sorted in a couple of weeks. Have faith in Reidy!

In principle, I agree.

But I sure as hell don't want to see us lose THE most exciting player in the competition. :(

Do you think I do?!?!?! I would love McLeod to stay but I wouldn't want the club to pay him over the top so in a couple of years time we get to be over the cap or we have to lose a couple of promising players just so we could fit McLeod in there. Salary cap restricts most of the clubs in offering McLeod $600K.

I am not worried about losing him as I think he will stay 99.9% but this talk of him wanting $600K is rubbish. All I am saying is that AFC have a policy of not offering anyone more than $500K, no matter how great they are. The figure that is reported by C7 is incorrect.;)

The figure of $500K or even $600K on it's own doesn't mean much in the scheme of things.
How much has he earned during the period of his last contract, and what % of the Crows total payments was it?
Then you need to do the same for the length of his next contract, plus make allowances/adjustments if he has gone up in the pecking order or not.

He can't actually move up in the pecking order because he has been the number one paid player at the Crows for some time.

The thing is that as number one he sets the benchmark and Reidy does firmly believe that the number 1 player shouldn't get more than $500k.

That was a figure he set about 3 years ago, so $550k would be about right now allowing for inflation.

That is pretty much where I was coming from.

Wrt player payments the issue that gets to me the most is not so much how much the top few players earn, but how a club with a sh*t list is forced to pay the same amount of money to it's players as a club with a very good list.
Essendon Vs Freo a few years back is probably the best example.
There you had a Metropolis, Toia and Waterhouse on ridiculously inflated incomes thanks to a stupid rule. Then along came Croad to top it all off.
Before anyone says that's Freo, it could easily have been one of our Clubs.
Essendon on the other hand were screwed.

Yeah I agree, PAfolwr.

I've never understood the need for a minimum salary level. I think it was 95% of the cap previously, it might be less than that now with a couple of clubs having to go to 92.5%.

It just forces clubs to pay out money which is undeserved. And it becomes an unnecessary expense; potentially costing clubs tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars of profit.

And it leaves little room to move once the list quality improves. If the players of a poor club suddenly start pulling their collective fingers out, they're going to be due for pay increases. But there's not going to be much of an increase when the club can only move from 95 to 100 per cent of the cap.
