Its that time of year, where the speculation starts to build to a fever pitch:

Who GOES?
Who RETIRES?
Who GETS TRADED?
and
Who STAYS?

let's hear ya!

for mine:

RETIRE:

Varco, Dunn, Reid, Langdon, Beams

DELISTED:

Broomehead, Scharenberg -are certainties

Murphy, Wills, Appleby, Bosenavulagi, Tohill, Lynch -not all will go but they are all in some danger of being delisted

TRADE POSSIBILITIES:

Phillips, Sier, Thomas, WHE - possibles, not necessarily probables

With our tight cap space and with a need to try to sign match-winner JDG, All Australian Darcy Moore, breakout son of a gun Josh Daicos and our leading goal kicker for the past two seasons Brody Mihocek; expect at least one of these to get away and so be used to gain a high draft pick. Alternatively, you'd think it would take a hell of a clean out to try and accommodate them all and it probably still wouldn't be possible.

With the thread title of "magpie lotto" this was the first thing that came to mind.

In terms of the thread and list management. rand corp I agree except:

  • Goldsack - did harsh to retire him from PA. I assume this is an oversight.
  • Lynch - more likely to request a trade than be delisted
  • Tohill and Murphy - I'd give another year. Murphy in particular I don't see as a risk of delisting.

Just wondering if most think that list is the whole and sole problems to our issues.
Short answer no. Without getting too far off topic there's issues with our game plan/match day tactics and a few deficiencies by position/role in our list/best 22. We need a crumber, established key forward, ready to go key defender (depth, but younger than Roughead), outside run, grunt midfielder so Adams doesn't have to do it all and big bodied clearance mid.

Potentially some of those exist within our list or in McInnes' case potentially soon will, but are being used in other roles. While others are inconsistent, not ready or injury prone.

Crumber - does Sidebottom ease into that role in the backend of his career?
Outside run - Quaynor ?
Grunt midfielders - Maynard, C. Brown, Atu ?
Big bodied clearance mid - DeGoey, Sier, T. Brown, McInnes

Jack Lonie is one I think we should go after. Had a discussion with Bucks a couple of years back and I feel he could fill a role with the amount of marking smalls we have.

Green = Keep/aim to re-sign
Yellow = Aim to use in trades
Red = Delist/Already gone

When do the AFL announce list sizes and TPP etc for 2021? I think that'll play a significant role in what the club does.

Gone: Reid, Varcoe, Beams, Dunn

I doubt we'll delist any contracted players so those OoC should be worried. I think Schaz and Broomy will likely get the tap on the shoulder and a suggestion to explore their options.

That leaves:
Tohill - shown good promise this year so I'd extend. Either he or Keane still have an extra year on the Cat B rookie list so 1 of them is a free hit to retain.
Keane - shown promise and managed to debut, re-sign.
Bosenavulagi - I'd offer another year.
Mihocek - re-sign.
Moore - re-sign.
Appleby - he and Wills in the gun, suspect at least 1 of them will be gone.
Madgen - offer a year and promote to senior list.
De Goey - re-sign.
Daicos - re-sign.
Lynch - may seek a trade, be next in line behind Wills and Appleby if we need list spots.
Wills - see Appleby

Contracted players who may seek a trade are likely to be Phillips, Sier, and Murphy. Of the 3, I'd rather retain Sier and Murphy.

Just losing Reid, Varcoe, Beams, Dunn, Schaz and Broomy opens up 4 senior list spots and 2 rookie list spots. That's enough room for 3 draftees and Madgen to be promoted. I think Lynch will need to be promoted as well so that'd be a +1 senior list vacancy if he's retained. That might be enough, just depends on list sizes, and how they'll be configured in terms of senior and cat A & B rookies. Wilson and Tohill/Keane could remain Cat B rookies if that option is retained.

I think Lynch and Appleby can decline new contracts and become DFA's. Can anyone confirm.

I guess they're doing their end of year interview processes at the moment so we'll likely start to hear something soon.

Lynch was on the senior list in 2020 (it was his 4th year at the club), while Keane was a Cat. A Rookie and Tohill the Cat. B. Mihocek was still on the Rookie List and will have to be elevated, along with Madgen.

Who GOES? Beams, Mayne, Broomhead, Wills, Appleby.....Sanderson, Harvey, Anthony Rocca

Who RETIRES? Varcoe, Reid, Dunn (all done). Langdon

Who GETS TRADED? (Some of) WHE, Phillips, Thomas, The Berg, Sier

That should clear the decks nicely.

thats the sad part - he gets games for us but no one would be willing to trade for him lol

We used 40 players. He didn't get games at the end of the year despite being fit.

He's limited and he's getting too old to have any foreseeable upside at all.

Eminently delistable IMO

if the pies try to trade wills... other clubs will just wait until he's delisted. no club would bother to trade for josh thomas either but someone might have a look at him if he was delisted.

I cant see a club looking for a glacial moving mid that can tackle, but can only sideway handball or kick 10 metres

Adelaide was looking for guys who were at least willing to have a go. If I was adelaide, I would have traded Tex for him earlier in the year...

Interesting issue with Lynch. Does a team totally give up on long-term projects of big men? Do they just pick the eyes out of mature-age ruckmen when they reach 25 or so? It's hard to justify keeping guys on the list for long, but it might be the only way with a lot of guys over 2m.

As for Tohill, i've never seen the point of the irish thing, other than frequent flyer points.

There have been worse players that have been traded to other clubs.

it really doesn’t reflect well that Wills was good enough toplay against WCE this season but not one other club in AFL would be willing to pick him up lol.

If we now, move on, Phillips, Beams and Langdon, we should finally have salary cap space.

If we hold onto Wills, Thomas (Blair must have shared his photos) WHE and Phillips *yeah I know he's on the table, then we will plod like a chip and gravy loaded fries British rail ticket man, instead of an Italian cop who put his hand on his holster and threatened to shoot a smart mouth me in 97...
We need the Italian cop to clean out at least 4 of my late 20's piss weak bravado schtick
