Magpies target 150,000 members

Is this for real?

AFL superpower Collingwood has boldly declared it can boost its membership to 150,000 within five years. The membership bonanza would reap as much as $23 million for the Magpies.
Collingwood is confident of reaching its target of 75,000 paid-up supporters this season, but Magpies chief executive Gary Pert said that was only a launching pad.
"We have a target in the next three years of 100,000 members and 150,000 within the next five years," he said yesterday.

We struggled to get 30,000 to Etihad last week, it is purely just about figures now, they aren't real members after all.

How much attended Etihad last week? I've noticed not many pies supporters don't like going there, better be in full force at the dogs game though cause that's the only game i get to go to all year! Maybe one more if i'm lucky.

If they're serious about 150k they better start expanding all the stadiums.

What do you mean by this M?
I meant in the traditional form, of members who attend plenty of games throughout the season.

It seems it's fashionable in world sport now to convert TV viewers into Members of your club, just to raise awareness of your brand, and of course to raise money.

I understand the concept, but surely the figure becomes meaningless after a while.

Matty,i think you are underrating members from states other than vic. We obviously can't make all the games but our money helps. I don't think you meant any offence but we are all real members.

Nothing wrong with wanting to become a member to support your club

Im a 3 game member at the present, bought the membership at the time knowing full I would not get to a game this year living in Perth and there was no interstate membership available for WA supporters this year(Only NSW, QLD and SA from memory)

Luck has it I can get to the Freo game in June. Cant wait as I haven't been to the G in years and it is going to be the highlight of my season.

The majority of these new members will not be able to get to a game(overseas etc) My sister just got her 10 year member certificate and she has lived in the USA for the last 2 years....

People just want to follow the club

Nah, I didn't mean interstate members, because I don't think that is who this campaign is targeting, well specifically anyway.

I believe that any membership should still have to have a gameday component to it to count for any tally, so for that all interstate memberships would count as they usually have at least one game day admittance attached to them.

Pert spoke about this on radio a few weeks ago.

Surprised it took this long to get out.

No chance of this happening.

Not unless we get Eddie to create an army of magpie robots and force em to all be members. Mwahahahaa.

How many real members would they really have ? I reckon no more than 30-35k , not knocking people who don't have full memberships either but there used to be a difference between a member and a season ticket holder , now we have 3 game memberships .

- One-game memberships
- Social non-game memberships
- Eddie McGuire Tonight memberships
- Eddie's Show on Triple M memberships
- Friend of a Member memberships
- Momember memberships
- Segmented memberships, so whingers/negative members can sit with other whingers/negative members at all games (that'll account for around 85% of our base, so lots of spare room in the Ponsford for real fans)
- I can't believe it's not Membership! membership

Endless possibilities, guys.

What's all this bullshit about "real members" and what not? Even if certain members don't go to games, they still PAID for their memberships which are going DIRECTLY TO THE CLUB. Even though they do not attend the games, they are still willing to use money out of their pockets to help support the club. THEY ARE STILL REAL MEMBERS.

It's entirely possible and would only represent around 10% of our supporter base. Pert mentioned this last year at Anzac Day.

That 150k of course wouldn't mean season tickets. It probably means selling small membership tasters to our poorly attended games.

I hope it doesn't get to the state where true supporters are squeezed out, but maybe Collingwood with such a membership might consider their own Simmonds Stadium proposal.

Happy to help the cause. I'll sign up my goldfish up for a pet membership.

Surely it's got to get to a stage where they start thinking about the quality of the membership.

As has been suggested here already, you really have to wonder about the depth of it with such a poor turnout to the Port game.

You are thinking about the word "Memberships" too narrowly
If you use it as if it means membership in terms of going to a game of football then you might be correct.
But if its used in terms of members of a Club that offers more than football then it is completely feasible

If you want people to go on this journey with you Baltimore Jack, you could list one or two examples of services that could be offered that are 'more than football'...

I think there are numerous possibilities for memberships on any number of topics that offer discounts or privileges, such as:
Dinning memberships at our new restaurant at the Westpac center.
Individual player memberships
Coaches membership
Social Club (without football) memberships
Banking membership
Clothing memberships
Co-dependent/joint branding memberships i.e Cosco, Holden, RACV
In fact any membership that is possible with any other type of club could be offered to Collingwood supports.
The possibilities are endless
